Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants Natalina Della (Garaventa), from Northern Italy, and Saverio Antonino Martino Sinatra, a Sicilian boxer, fireman, and bar owner. Due to his injuries at birth, his baptism at St. Francis Church in Hoboken was delayed until April 2, 1916. A childhood operation on his mastoid bone left major scarring on his neck, and during adolescence he suffered from cystic acne that further scarred his face and neck. Sinatra was raised in the Catholic Church.Growing up on the gritty streets of Hoboken made Sinatra determined to work hard to get ahead. Starting out as a saloon singer in musty little dives (he carried his own P.A. system), he eventually got work as a band singer, first with The Hoboken Four, then with Harry James and then Tommy Dorsey. With the help of George Evans (Sinatra's genius press agent), his image was shaped into that of a street thug and punk who was saved by his first wife, Nancy Barbato Sinatra. In 1942 he started his solo career, instantly finding fame as the king of the bobbysoxers--the young women and girls who were his fans--and becoming the most popular singer of the era among teenage music fans. About that time his film career was also starting in earnest, and after appearances in a few small films, he struck box-office gold with a lead role in Anchors Aweigh (1945) with Gene Kelly, a Best Picture nominee at the 1946 Academy Awards. Sinatra was awarded a special Oscar for his part in a short film that spoke out against intolerance, The House I Live In (1945). His career on a high, Sinatra went from strength to strength on record, stage and screen, peaking in 1949, once again with Gene Kelly, in the MGM musical On the Town (1949) and Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949). A controversial public affair with screen siren Ava Gardner broke up his marriage to Nancy Barbato Sinatra and did his career little good, and his record sales dwindled. He continued to act, although in lesser films such as Meet Danny Wilson (1952), and a vocal cord hemorrhage all but ended his career. He fought back, though, finally securing a role he desperately wanted--Maggio in From Here to Eternity (1953). He won an Oscar for best supporting actor and followed this with a scintillating performance as a cold-blooded assassin hired to kill the US President in Suddenly (1954). Arguably a career-best performance--garnering him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor--was his role as a pathetic heroin addict in the powerful drama The Man with the Golden Arm (1955).
Sinatra died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on May 14, 1998, aged 82, with his wife at his side after suffering two heart attacks. Sinatra was in ill health during the last few years of his life, and was frequently hospitalized for heart and breathing problems, high blood pressure, pneumonia and bladder cancer. He also suffered from dementia-like symptoms due to his usage of antidepressants. He had made no public appearances following a heart attack in February 1997. Sinatra's wife encouraged him to "fight" while attempts were made to stabilize him, and reported that his final words were, "I'm losing." Sinatra's daughter, Tina, later wrote that she and her siblings (Frank Jr. and Nancy) had not been notified of their father's final hospitalization, and it was her belief that "the omission was deliberate. Barbara would be the grieving widow alone at her husband's side." The night after Sinatra's death, the lights on the Empire State Building in New York City were turned blue, the lights at the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honor, and the casinos stopped spinning for one minute.
Sinatra's funeral was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, California, on May 20, 1998, with 400 mourners in attendance and thousands of fans outside. Gregory Peck, Tony Bennett, and Sinatra's son, Frank Jr., addressed the mourners, who included many notable people from film and entertainment. Sinatra was buried in a blue business suit and his grave was adorned with mementos from family members-cherry-flavored Life Savers, Tootsie Rolls, a bottle of Jack Daniel's, a pack of Camel cigarettes, a Zippo lighter, stuffed toys, a dog biscuit, and a roll of dimes that he always carried-next to his parents in section B-8 of Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.

My Grandfather's childhood home. There used to be a bar that my grandfather owned called Lisa's Tavern. I remember as a kid we would go and visit him at the bar and then go to my Great Grandmother 's home, eat a big Italian meal (I wouldn't because I was a picky eater,) and then we will go to my grandparent's house and eat another big meal and it will be a Irish meal and tons of it . And I or my siblings would get cranky because it was a long day and then go home. The last time I was in Hoboken was over a decade ago. My grandfather was the one I told you that had a run-in with Vito Genovese. The Tavern my grandfather owned is no longer there. Very interesting video. And yes, parking is a pain there.

Hey Scott - thanks for this video. My father lived in Hoboken for several years and delivered papers as a kid. One of his customers was Mr. & Mrs. Sinatra. He said they "were nice, but never, EVER gave me a tip"! Cool to see the streets where my father (and Frank) traveled.

Thank you for doing this video!! I'm a huge Sinatra fan. I was young when he passed in 1998 but I'll never forget it. Love all of his music. I wish I met Ol' Blue Eyes. Thank you for being so cool to do a story of The Chairman of the Board. One of my favorite videos of yours. His favorite restaurant was Patsy's in NYC. He loved the room upstairs. I went to a Sinatra dinner there with the Pit Boss. 😊

Yeah and amazingly, someone (cough, cough, her) smashed his stone and had a new one placed there, all because she didn’t like Barbara. I also am friends with a lady who worked for his entourage and she said she was a real b to her as well. But, at least she keeps his music alive on Siriusly Sinatra on XM radio.

Frank Sinatra was a great singer, actor (I love the MGM Musicals) and back in the early 80s, my parents had a boat that they docked in Mystic, CT. One weekend, my Dad wanted to visit another marina so we drove over to it, I believe it was the Mystic River Marina - Frank & Barbara were there on a very large boat (owned by the owner of the Chicago Black Hawks). Frank saw my Dad and came out and said hi and they talked for a while, Barbara waved from the boat and actually stepped out for a bit too. It was an incredible day, I have a photo in one of my old photo albums, now I have to find it again!

Literally, where a star was born. It's funny how I hated this kind of music when I was a kid but grew to love it more and more the older I got. Now, when I hear it, I immediately remember my parents and especially my mom. All the ladies loved him back in those days. My mom told me she was a distant cousin of his wife Nancy Sinatra. She never made a big deal out of it, just mentioned it now and then. It was so cool to see all of these locations! I love Fly me to the Moon and of course Chicago lol. Now I want to go listen to some of his songs. What a legend! .... btw, yes, I looked it haha
