Good review Mike and I have to admit the price point is ridiculously high especially when you got two albums in surround on the WAKA/WAZOO boxset for 20 to 30 bucks cheaper. I was even at one point thinking of cancelling my pre-order because of its elaborate price tag however I am glad I never did. Regarding the CD content, I don't think we get quite the killer content that came with the WAKA/WAZOO boxset but the live material is very good. The fact that it also included the Quad mix did dampen the blow a bit and twisted my arm enough for me not to cancel my preorder. I absolutely love to death the surround mixes and have played it to death so even I would recommend it.
I think we can expect higher prices than we're used to, for a lot of things we want, at least for a while. Inflation is super high. Supply chain issues from the lockdowns and so on. It's a reason I have to be more selective, too.
I love Mike's reaction when flipping through the booklet and coming upon a photo of the statuesque Ruth Underwood in a halter top! No disrespect intended at all towards Ruth, who is a killer musician for sure, but she was an old-school MILF if ever there was one! I wasn't going to buy this set because of the high price, and the fact that they didn't combine Apostrophe with it, since I believe the material on that was recorded at the same time... same scenario as with Waka/Jawaka and Grand Wazoo, which made Waka/Wazoo well worth the price. But thanks to the QQ forum I found out about an incredible Black Friday deal on this direct from Universal's web store, and got it for under $50 including tax with free shipping. Sorry to gloat! Looking forward to the presumed future release of an Apostrophe box with the original quad and new surround mixes, since that's probably my favorite Zappa album overall (hard as it is to pick just one), and I'll probably have to bite the bullet and pay the big bucks for that. Now, let's all floss together, in honor of Frank!
Another great review-Thanks Mike...heard Apostrophe and One Size fits All(or was it Zoot Allures) will be packaged together(fingers crossed)like the Waka Wazoo set....lets hear you play that kit and noodling on guitar-knowing you are a musician...Pete Pardo on Sea of Tranquility once in a while will let go a Riff or two...and are you familier with the beef that Dweezils siblings have had with him over the last few years using the Zappa name and all
'Ole Audiophile to Life In Surround: I joined your group. 1st topic, your missing DVD-Audio. Sony makes an affordable 4k music player that plays the DVD-Audio format if you go into set-up & turn it on. (Sony UPB-X800M2). I own one, they sound immaculate. How did you hop on over into surround? Me, I'm an old goat who once turned up in the spring of 1973 for Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon Tour. The surround effects blew the whole bunch of us away. Soon after, I attended a World Series Of Rock with Emerson, Lake & Palmer headlining. Again, the surround effects flew us to Mars. That cinched it for me I ran out & purchased the whole ball of wax surround setup by the end of 1974. I've chased it since. I own that Zappa album in CD-4 as well. I also was able to purchase countless SACDs & DVD-Audio that have long since been out of print. Thanx for turning up.
I believe that one is The Mothers Of Invention. Zappa, on his next release turned out a CD-4 record of 'Apostrophe' as well. (A little Don't Eat Yellow Snow & Cosmik Debris in quadraphonic never hurt a soul...) Also, the holy grail of multichannel in the SACD Roxy Music Avalon, purchased when released. It was going for $400 & up on discogs last I looked...
