Zappa's work with Flo and Eddie was some of his most hilarious. Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman ("Flo and Eddie") were in the band "The Turtles", formed in 1965. Their song "Happy Together" was #1 for three weeks back in 1967. They were, after The Turtles, comedy rock artists in their own right. Hooking up with Zappa was like a match made in heaven. Y'all need to watch the movie "200 Motels". And you absolutely want to listen to Zappa's "Live at the Fillmore East". You'll learn to do the "Mudshark", learn about creamed corn, and get a snippet of them doing "Happy Together" but in the context of a groupie who will only do it with rock stars who had a number one hit, with a bullet...with a bullet. Heh-heh. Blessings.

Funny touch is how Zappa always played "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" theme.... every time they mention New York in the lyrics! Thanks for another great review!
@barrywilson1294
@barrywilson1294 2 года назад
The Tonight Show originated in New York and Carson hosted it there until 1972 when he moved himself and the show to Hollywood. There was some negative reaction at the time (change bad) and playing the Tonight Show theme before each mention of “New York” was for laughs. Frank played the Garrick theater in NY at a time when the “Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” was still in NY too.

The sheer absurdity of the storyline, and the crazy response to a crazy (imaginary?) threat, all that is very Cold War and 70s USA, but it's also Zappa's way of thinking about living in America. Reasoning with a mountain is in a way akin to the government trying to deal with the various social "threats" of the time, civil and human rights, abortion, poverty, feminism, inequality and social unrest. The forces of change were too strong, the legislation and the speechmaking were puny by comparison, "nature" came out on top and we had progress. Remember Zappa's famous phrase "Without deviation from the norm, progress is impossible". So keep doing your own thing your own way, guys!

The epic tale of Billy the Mountain and his stunning wife Ethel a tree! Featuring the irrepressible Flo and Eddie! Many think that the combination of Zappa with Flo & Eddie was just too much weirdness. Others find them just weird enough. I, for one, take a completely neutral position on this. Twirly, twirly, twirly... The more serious debate is whether this version of Billy the Mountain is better than the one on 'Just Another Band From L.A' For me, it pretty much just depends on how much Billy the Mountain time you have...Which, now that I think about it, is pretty much a microcosm for the dilemma of human existance. Or not.

This song(?) was never performed the same way twice: not only did Zappa continue to refine it on the road, adding and deleting passages (one version includes a parody of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"; another features Flo & Eddie reciting an elaborate tongue-twister together), but many of the references to locations and public figures were changed from show to show, often "personalized" with local references for wherever they happened to be performing.

omg, to a LA home audience no less! material for which coming direct from local LA TV commercials no less - and there's more! hilarity! Can you imagine taking this in the road as a regular item? All over the known rock-n-roll world that might be happier with the Vanilla Fudge or Three Dog Night? Oh My!!!!! Oh yah! Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman had done background vocals on Marc Bolan's Electric Warrior album which was just then (August 1971) being pressed for release next month and destined to become a new Cosmic Dancer shibboleth for your mythology !!!! and Aynsley Dunbar, oh wow! Hard to believe this is fifty years old. Already.

Man, what can I say about this elixir? I listened to Billy the Mountain every day for about two months back in the 90s and to this day I break it down into four parts: The first part I can follow the story of Billy getting royalties for being photographed,; the second part I get lost and somehow Billy gets drafted and Ethel is deemed a communist; the third part is the wicked build-up with Studebaker Hawk that leads to an amazing crescendo in the telephone booth followed by the fourth part, amazing extended jam. It's a song enjoyed by the inner, inner Zappa circle: those who love the Filmore East 1971 album and look forward to a solid 30 minutes of a very specific kind of Flo and Eddie entertainment. I miss Frank so much!

The version I know is from "Just Another Band From LA", and I heard the craziest stuff about it, as in: it was actually 2 or 3 hours long and Zappa cut it down to 20 some minutes; also: they performed it all over the country and had to change names that fit for the present location, and so on. It is still highly entertaining for me, and I enjoyed the differences to this version, because I know the other almost by heart. P.S.: There was no musical solos in the one I know

There are passages of preposterous beauty amongst the hilarity, raw juicy jams and wild changes. We grew up with a shorter version from the album Was Mothers Just Another Band from LA. There is a basic storyBilly gets a royalty check. They go on vacation and Studebaker Hawk (named after a car) goes in the phone booth with flies and attempts to get him drafted and falls to his demise. All the details and jams are improvised in between. They did this differently every night. As teenagers we memorized the album version and would sing it word for word. You should really check that version and the songs on the other side. FZ’s guitar work is phenomenal.

Great point about the drumming, and tempo & meter changes, in particular. That is Mr. Aynsley Dunbar, who played with John Mayal, Jefferson Starship, and Journey. Though he was more drummer than they needed, Zappa's music was perfect for his skills. I also like your reference to the story/lyrics, and how this relates to Greggery Peccary. Indeed, they both seem to me to be cartoons for the ears!
@songsmithy07

That "not quite Gospel" vibe is Doo Wop, which is a huge influence that you can hear throughout his body of work. Now, when you listen to Gregory Peccary next time, you'll be able to catch the Billy the Mountain reference
@Frankincensedjb123
@Frankincensedjb123 2 года назад
Ah, yes, the top 40, ever radio friendly Billy the Mountain, companion piece to Greggery Peccary, performance pieces for stage and screen. Thirty minutes of story telling, chanting, singing, and musical interludes. Again, what didn't Frank do? Next you've got to do a Zappa Affair, a piece played by the Berkley Symphonic Orchestra. It combined theater, dance and larger-than-life puppets with Zappa's music, but it's some two hours of music, so maybe if you ever do album length material. 200 Motels and Thing Fish are two more lengthy performance pieces Zappa did, just FYI.
@tonescape1
@tonescape1 Год назад
@SightAfterDark: It's a surreal story. Yes, Billy is supposed to be a real mountain -- at the beginning of the story, Zappa even locates where he and Ethel "live": between Rosamund and Gorman, which places them on the north side of the San Bernardino mountains, between I-5 and Lancaster. Of course a mountain can't really talk, or walk across the USA -- but that's just Zappa using his wild imagination. This has been one of my favorite long "theater" pieces ever since I first learned it, back in the late 1970s. My crazy school friends introduced me to it, and we used to sing it every day on the schoolbus -- the ride was just the right length of time to perform the whole thing ... every weekday.

Definitely a unique era of The Mothers. Glad that Flo and Eddie got to be immortalized in some really well composed and recorded content, because those guys got royally fucked over at just about every other point in their careers. Hard to believe they were the voices behind The Turtles - So Happy Together. This work was so important because it was seeing this lineup that changed educational and professional direction for Ruth Underwood. So even though a lot of people are not a fan of this era, we wouldn't have had the core of what most consider to be "the best" without it. Billy is just one of those songs. I never think I'm in the mood for it... and then 10 seconds in I'm hooked. It could be an hour long... 2 hours long, and I would never tire of it. Also a great example of Franks voice before the stage attack incident/injury that lowered it for the rest of his life. Side note: I come here almost specifically for your Zappa content, but I joined the Patreon last night and will start checking out a little bit of everything. Keep up the great work!

Many times it zigs where I was expecting it to zag. Still good, but I missed all the references to local people and places that are in the JABFLA version. Also this version is missing my favorite line of all: when Studebaker Hawk falls off Billy's mouth, just as you hear him hit the bottom, someone kinda in the background yells "oh fuck, I'm gonna need a truss", which still kills me every time I hear it.

I really appreciate your reactions. Good to see that you not just listen to some of the most popular songs (Yesterday...). And as a Zappa fan for 35 years, for me it's great that you are especially listening to his music.

Many true Zappa fans love Billy... Zappa fans that like only the Overnight Sensation and Apostrophe period up until Joe's Garage... those folk tend not to like it as much.

They usually come around and expand their library. But yeah... it sucks that the majority of reactions out there are from those two albums, which IMHO, are a bit of a bruise on the catalog. Not that they aren't great, because they are, but they are a total misrepresentation of the overall Zappa experience. And that's coming from a guy who was 11 when Frank passed away and who's parents didn't listen to Zappa at all. Hell, my mom worked for gospel singer Sandi Patty. My entire life as a child was my mom hanging out with Sandi and people like Amy Grant. Thank God the Universe at some point helped me get my musical shit together. lol.

Yeah this is a different version there's a really good version of this from the album just another band from LA that's my favorite like a definitive version but that's just me I love that first lyrics though a regular picturesque postcardy Mountain resting between Rosamond and Gorman those are two places up in the high desert above Los Angeles I used to go there with my crazy friends when they go up on their offer road bikes and go on their Adventures it's not far from where Vasquez mountains are which kind of really aren't Mountains they're just these big rocks that come out of the ground at a forty-five degree angle it's like the crust of the earth just got heaved up and this is where they would film a lot of Star Trek episodes in that area

Billy the Mountain appears as a character in "The Adventures of Greggary Peccary"! He's making "those new brown clouds" when he laughs. These cross-references inside Zappas own works are always enjoyable.

Another is the phrase, O Mein Papa in the Earths crust. The song was sung by Eddie Fisher (Princess Leia's real father) Fisher > Fissure Fissure in the Earths crust. (Earthquake)

YES!!!!! By the way Felix Pappalardi, who was mentioned in the song, wrote, arranged and produced Cream's second album, Disraeli Gears, was the bassist for Mountain, and was shot and killed by his wife, with a derringer he had given her. She was convicted of criminally negligent homicide.

I was 12 when I first heard the original of this from the Just Another Band From LA album. Then I outgrew the puerile bits and started listening to the music. And then I heard the Uncle Meat album and my mind was completely blown.

Just found you guys. My brother got Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention live album called Just Another Band From LA when he got home from the Army. I was 11 at the time. The reason he bought it was because it had a song called Dog Breath on it and that was his nickname in the Army for some reason. Turned out it was the worst song on the album. But the rest of the album was awesome and I heard it a lot when Mom wasn’t home. Lol The album Baby Snakes is really good. I love the title track and then a cool little ditty called Titties And Beer is very comical. Thanks guys. You are awesome

It's certainly one of his longest pieces. The other version from Just Another Band From LA is equally great, especially if you're well acquainted with the geography of Southern California. Right behind the Jack In The Box on Glenn Oaks where they keep the pools of old poison gas and obsolete germ bombs.
