He re-recorded this at least twice, and was still ending concerts with it in 1982 and 1984. Damn I miss him. Beautiful music for all us ugly people out there. I was born a few days before this was released. Yeah, he references the Watts riots in the liner notes "is how I feel about racial unrest in general and the Watts situation in particular. It was written during the Watts riot as it developed. I shopped it briefly all over Hollywood but no one would touch it . . . everybody worries so much about not getting any air play. My, my."

That this came out in 1966 on his first ever record Freak Out (he was talking about the Watts Riots) and it still holds true with the Rodney King trial and today. This blues oriented song was being rehearsed by the band when the label execs heard them for the first time. They were signed based on the idea that the rest of their material was also blues based. Little did they know what they were in store for. This was the first double rock album with a variety of styles and experimentation that went over budget, so the whole fourth side single track was never completed and released as is. Listen to the live version on Roxy And Elsewhere from the early 1970s for a more professional jazz musician rendition. The original Mothers were great, but lacking slightly in their musical ability and that's why Zappa eventually disbanded them to seek out other players.

No Sori, it is not always like this. 1968 was the most turbulent year in American history. I have every reason to believe that this year will surpass it. As far as the mask issue, "Those who choose temporary security over liberty deserve neither." True then, true today. BTW Frank's Dad used to work for the government back then basically as a guinea pig using skin patches infused with different chemicals. Frank as a kid used to sit cross legged, take a small puddle of mercury, hit it with a hammer to make it scatter and scoop it back together with his hands and do it again. Then he went on and made a boatload of incredible music.

Frank is talking about the Watts Riots (1964), speaking the truth (politics/socially) and exposing the inherent rasism that still exists today. I bought this LP when it came out and over 50 years later it is as strong as ever. Give a listen to Brown Shoes Don't Make It, It Can't Happen Here or The Idiot Bastard Son. This LP was the first debut double album ever released. Frank floated a presidential run in the 80's and he had the League of Women's Voters at his concerts to register people. The hypnotic sound is enforcing the hypnotic effect of TV/media. As in "Why do you think they call it Programming"?
