Frank Zappa Unraveled: A Fascinating Insight into the Yellow Shark Performances

This from Wikipedia: [The Yellow Shark] was the last Zappa album released in his lifetime, almost exactly a month before [Zappa] died of the cancer from which he had suffered for several years. [The Yellow Shark] features live recordings from the Ensemble Modern's 1992 performances of Zappa's compositions. In the album's notes, Zappa describes The Yellow Shark as one of the most fulfilling projects of his career, and as the best representation of his orchestral works.

BACKGROUND (by way of) EXPLAINATION
I have been obsessively listening to Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention since the summer of 1979. Nonstop Zappa consumerism with some MOI thrown in. These videos seek to provide context to Frank Zappa’s entire body of work.
AUDIO
A few have suggested that I re-double my efforts and invest a little time in Audacity training for consistency in my audio editing. Thank you for the suggestions. This recording was normalized to -1db and compressed to -20db.

Is there anyone more famous than Frank for not knowing what he does? And when you do know what he does he is instantly a living legend and treasure. Just incredible. He is the last of the great 20th Century Composers. I consider myself to be fortunate to be alive during his time.

Doing what he loved to the very end, despite the suffering. He only left when he couldn't bare it any longer. That's the way to go out of this world, like a true champion, with courage and vision.

I can't say his work ethic wore off on me. I don't put in those crazy hours like he did. But my approach to my work is influenced by him: why be like everyone else? Be different. Be unique.

It's not shown here, but seeing Frank conduct the Ensemble Modern and then turn around to witness a 20-minute standing ovation for his final public appearance, smile proudly at his wife and kids in the audience, and then, after a brief encore of one chord (!) finally walk off for good to sit all alone in an empty stairway, listening to the roar of the audience still going strong..........it's incredibly moving. Frank wasn't the kind of man to show his sentimental side EVER, but after a lifetime playing for people who either didn't like what he did, or else didn't understand it the way he'd like them to, and after being diagnosed with terminal cancer and knowing that this was it......talk about complex emotions! You're finally being celebrated by audiences who understand you and can't get enough, and yet, you know you're dying and you're in too much pain to attend the next show. Sigh, as a lifelong fan, it's heartbreaking to see someone who was usually so stoic and confident sitting there in silence, probably not knowing how to feel anymore. Just had to keep working as much as possible until it no longer was possible.

This is not hyperbole, and I submit that it's not even opinion -- but Frank Zappa was the very real definition of a musical genius. Love his music, hate it, maybe like it a little -- that aside, he was a true genius when it came to music.

Frank was ecstatic over this band as they weren't the usual union orientated numpties that got drunk at lunch time and turned up late for rehearsals. So cool for him to have worked with people who loved their art and were open minded enough to make the creative process flow, unlike the orchestras etc that Frank had struggled with over the years to get something happening, possibly with the exception of 200 motels.

At some point I'll post a video about his experiences with orchestras. But for the most part there's nothing more to add to your comment. From everything I've listened to from FZ you've pretty much summed it up.
