So glad you didn't let anyone deter you from making this video. I am currently visiting my daughter who recently got stationed to Wiesbaden. Hadn't been to Frankfurt since 2004. Today we took the train into Frankfurt and rode the U5 to "Gibbs Kaserne" My daughter ,sil and granddaughter were with me. Omgoodness did it bring back so many memories. Nothings the same, but everything else is still there. My dad met my german mom there in 63. He was stationed at Gibbs. I was born at 97th General. I married a soldier and we lived on Betts from 83-92.right behind the skating rink. He worked on Gibbs, my son went to Atterberry Elementary and my daughter was born at 97th General. Oh, how I miss living in Germany. So glad that my daughter gets to experience it as an adult. Thanks again for making this video.🥰

I was a civilian employee for the US Army in Frankfurt from 87 to 93. I was one of the last workers at Gibbs concern. I ran a printing and binding shop for the Army. I moved back to the states in 93, And they moved my printing operation out to Wiesbaden right after I left.

Stayed in Edwards, '92-95, last bldg on right before the "brass" housing bldgs, up on 3rd floor. Last family to live in that bldg for 2 months before Frankfurt closed. Worked at V Corps & then STB. Didn't have enough time remaining to move family down to Heidelberg, ready to retire after nearly 20 yrs. Something about Germany's weather always made me happy. Fond memories now after nearly 25 years of retirement. Thanks for sharing your post.

Great video! You captured Gibbs the way I remember it and the territory in which I roamed as a kid. I lived there from 1968 - 71. We had the last house (duplex) 4073b on the end at the corner of gießener and Ronneberger straße. I saw my street, the apartments, the playground, the Tota Loda at the entrance, the street up to the back gate of the Kaserne. I went to school at Atterberry. Thanks for the memories!

I lived in Edwards between 1986 and 1991 (my father was in the Army at the time). There used to be two playgrounds, one uphill and one downhill. I also remember the huge field, where the Special Olympics would be held, and it also had a shortcut to a doctor's office, where I would visit when I'm ill or needed a checkup.

Although I lived in Platen (61-64), this video was great to view. It still evokes great memories of a very significant time in my life. Such a special time for us military kids and families. Sad to see the Junior High gone from history, (and Frankfurt Elementary No. 2) but great to know many of our living quarters still exist and are well cared for. Had my right ankle x-rayed and put in a cast at 97th General Hospital. Thank you so much for making this video and keeping our memories alive.

First...Thanks for posting this!I lived right across the street from the AYA (American Youth Activities). My Mom ran it in from around 60' to mid 64'. We just called it the teen club. I learned to dance there, shoot pool, first acting gig on stage there in the scouts and first run in with MPs outside of it.. Somehow mom and her AYA cohort got Joey Dee & The Starliters to play onstage there. Joey Dee - "Peppermint Twist".ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0xDzizOqCJkM.htmlom also turned me on to The Beatles (long before they came to the US). When I came in after school one day she gave me a nickel, told me there was a new band on the jukebox and that they were better than Elvis. You could play two songs on a nickel so she told me to play both sides of the 45. Side A was "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Side B was "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand".Mom was right and I grew my hair out to a Beatles' cut.

We lived there from '60 to '63. So changed now I don't recognize any of it except the entrance to Drake. Did get a quick glimpse of one of our two old houses on Edwards Officer's Row before it blew by. That building everyone calls the DYA we called the Teen Club. Saturday night dances with local bands. Attended the old Jr. HS and then Frankfurt American HS. Hated those funky elevator/people movers in what was then the IG Farben building. Love the big downtown PX. On a clear night, if we twisted our transistor radios around just right, we could bring in BBC radio. The new group on the radio was singing "I Want To Hold Your Hand". :-)

Lived there in Edwards 1968-70, when my father transferred from Augsburg to the 3rd Armored Division. I remember the orchard and football field. I found two baby hedgehogs in the field of straw near the orchard. We used to play in the woods near the train tracks and ride our bike next to the canal, smoking little cigars we bought at the German store on Homburger Strasse. I rember the apartment towers near the intersection, and the markets my mom shopped at on the ground floors. I lived in the row of buildings near the field, an hung with Ronnie Whaley and Byron Robinson. Also catching the street cars behind the chuch in back of officer's housing, using tickets we found on the ground. One time a conducter came abord, looked at our tickes, and made us get off next to the cornfields. Good times!

Love this video Otis. I was stationed at the 97th General Hospital from May 73 till November 75. We would go to the Gibbs Kaserne mess hall because they had much better food than the 97th at that time at least. My last night in Germany (before going back to "the world") was spent with friends who lived in those family housing units behind Gibbs. My wife and I plan on going to Germany (and the rest of Europe) in about 2 years after we both retire. I look forward to showing her these very sites. BTW I attended Frankfurt American High in the evening when it doubled as the University of Maryland Frankfurt annex. Spot on regarding what the Americans accomplished for all of Germany after the war. Great job Otis!

Sylvia Hess How so much fun didn't change. I lived there on Am Schieferstein 1963-1966 just off the orchard and ballpark. We picked apples from the orchard and knew we had only so much time before the old man would chase us out. On Google earth, I can still see the outline of the baseball field next to the orchard. My dad was stationed at Gibbs with the 109th MPs. We lived in building 431 Apt. C1. We lived there from 1966-69. I attended Elementary school #2. Our practice field for baseball and football was the landing area for the medical helicopters at the 97th Army Hospital. We spent many Fridays and Saturdays roller skating. I'd like to mention that when I lived there the main entrance to Edwards had a black wrought iron fence with swastikas in it. There was a huge black stallion on a pedestal also. There was an old house of ill repute that was partially bombed in, that had the most amazing murals of partially nude women hand painted. We marveled at those ! The Drake Edwards barracks buildings had German helmets and swords engraved in the sides of the buildings. In Edwards we played many baseball games on their field. Over the fence there was a farm field and beyond that the bluff over looking the valley. There were old concrete WW2 machine gun and observers bunkers. Anyway, thanks for the videos.

I was stationed at Gibbs Kaserne (1968-69) as a member of Co. C. 308th S & S BN. Our motor pool (2 1/2 ton truck Co.) was adjacent to the rear entrance of the Gibbs Housing Area. Our afternoon formation often was conducted as the high school students would walk through the Kaserne to reach their housing area. Often during the time I was stationed there during an afternoon formation, the PLT SGT reminded his platoon ......."10 will get you 20." He explained - 10 minutes "of pleasure" with any of the dependent girls would get you 20 years at Manheim, the Army stockade for Germany.

I was stationed at Gibbs from 88-90 (C-17th Sig)and didn't recognize any of it until the 7 min mark when the video hit the main gate building and showed it and what little you can see of the row of barracks down the right side of the main strip into the Kaserne. I was in the last barracks at the end across from the chow hall back then. Loved it at Gibbs.

Cathy Day We might have seen or talked to each other. My family lived in building 2122 when I was between the ages of 4 and 6 in 1963 to 1966. Once in a while, the adults set up army tents so that they connected each other. It was like one huge room that smelled of canvas. We also had fun playing "I Declare War" in the sand playground.

Wow, thanks alot man that was great I was stationed at Drake from 89-91. Spent alot of time at the burger bar at Edwards and when Desert Storm broke out I pulled many hours of guard duty at that back gate entrance into Edwards Housing. I never knew that there was a junior high by drake either. Always wondered what it would have been like to be a kid or a teenager over there probably pretty awesome. Hope to get over there one day and show my family where I was at. In the meantime I can show them your video. Thanks again.

Thank you so much Otis for this very thoughtfully made video. I lived in Old Edwards between 1967-1970 and attended Atterbury Elementary School (#2?) while my father worked at the army hospital. I think I caught a glimpse of our old apartment in your video. Old Edwards apartments were multi-colored (green, pink, blue etc) and New Edwards apartments were a uniform beige/brown. The big area separating the two Edwards's was a giant black top area where we would ride our bikes. I remember the roller skating rink in Betts and doing a lot of kids activities with AYA in my neighborhood. My family would sometimes take long walks along the nearby Nidda river (one time all the way to Bad Vilbel and back), which was very scenic. In wintertime we would go sledding with other kids at this nearby hill just outside the basel. The kids called it "German Hill". Very funny. Anyway I was very young then. Great memories!

I went to Atterbury the same time you did. In fourth grade, my teacher was Mr. Maynard. He always walked with his neck turned sideways due to old injuries. My fifth grade teacher was Mrs. Smith. She always had these paper sacks on a table with incintive 'booby prizes' she'd give us when we did somethng outstanding. one time mine was suction cup devil horns. She made me put them on and walked me to each class to show me off. I also had classes in the Annex. I remember the German cook in the lunchroom. He'd smack his metal spoon on the inserts and yell, "chef?" I also remember our music teacher was a good-looking African-American lady, but I can't remember her name. She played piano and sang. Probaly the best music teacher I ever had in any school. Also Miss Seaton for math, who I had an immediate boyhood crush on.

Great videos Otis, brought back memories. My father was in the Air Force, and we were stationed in Germany from 1967-70. We spent the first nine months in Zweibrucken. Then the remainder of our tour in Frankfurt. When we first arrived in Frankfurt we lived in Platen housing right across the street from the elementary school. The three or four buildings in the immediate area were for officers I believe. We only lived there for about nine months also, when my dad got promoted we rated better quarters so they moved us to Hicog on Joachem-Becker Strasse. Where we spent the remainder of our three year tour.
