Franklin Falls is one of the most popular winter hiking destinations area, and that's for good reason.
The spectacle of seeing this waterfall half-frozen is stunning, especially surrounded by the fresh PNW snow. All types of hikers come to see this waterfall in the winter - experienced, non-experienced and plenty of wanderlusters in the middle.
That said, spikes are recommended, and even poles. We saw quite a few people slipping and sliding around, and without spikes or poles, you'll likely be sliding down to the waterfall on your butt.
The Denny Creek Road is closed for the winter, so that adds about five miles round-trip to the hike, making it a total of just over seven. Scenery is beautiful, though, as you pretty much follow the creek up to the falls.
Ice covers the access road after exiting HWY 90, though, so we parked the Mustang a good distance away from the bridge overpass, as it's too easy to slip, slide and get stuck - even in an AWD vehicle.
Enjoy the trail and enjoy the hike - one of the PNW winter's best - and very accessible, making it overly popular. But definitely worth it!
