@@pilpyfimbleton8918 In a skit show you don't have to justify it. In a show with an on going story it's the writer's job to write IN jokes, otherwise different characters, settings and story are pointless.
Actually he was modeled to look like (and was actually named after) Franklin Roosevelt. It's especially noticeable since his wife's name is Eleanore, clearly named and based on FDR's wife.
I remember my husband and me laughing hysterically at this bit. As children, we watched the old 1930's Popeye cartoons (with the usual punch-ups between Popeye and Bluto) included in children's TV shows. So we got the joke. Franklin was indeed an odd but hilarious "preppie" character in "The Critic". Interesting to note: Franklin and Eleanor - the same names as President FDR and First Lady, Eleanor. But Franklin looked like George Bush.
I miss this show, it was really clever. Why does Fox get rid of the good stuff, like The Critic and Futurama? I like Family Guy and all but those shows are by far funnier (although FG seems to be lacking lately).
Well The Critic was originally first aired on ABC. It didn't air on Fox until season 2. But yeah it was made by Gracie Films so I can see why it's a Fox show in a way.

@v1fuz Sad but true. However, what FG fans fail to realize is that the pop culture references work better in this show. It's about a movie critic. Of course you're gonna get movie references. In FG, it just feels out-of-place.
@inazumanfrash I think they were trying to replicate the look of Popeye's face since his pipe appears to pop out behind his nose in a way that looks like it's coming out of someplace else but it's some design cheat the cartoonist had.
