Sir, your enthusiasm keeps the lights on! In the contemporary world, the fine art of painting has left the building!

Saw hals exhibition at rijksmuseum and fell in love with his work. Like you say its like meeting people from the past. So much expression in the paintings you can feel their personalities

Thank you for this video. Reminds me of what a lovely exhibition it was taking us back in time to meet those wonderful characters.

Thank you for the kind comments. The whole film can be viewed on my website - it's around 30 minutes long in total. You do have to be a member, but the annual fee is very reasonable, and there are lots of benefits - like seeing all the gallery tours in full, and a monthly members' video on the 1st of every month from me...

I wonder if the portrait of a young woman is that of Judith Leyster; a dutch artist who's work is often mistaken for Hals'. He apparently had painted her and looking at her own self portraits the rise in the mouth corners is the same as is the headshape and general look.

Love Franz Hals. Not too many artists have that freshness and looseness. His work looks so contemporary - I like your enthusiasm.

I agree with you, but do try and spell his name right.

The luminosity of the paint and the characters. Wonderful.

Biblically shaped worldview, expressed wonderfully in paint. This is of my culture, faith and worldview. I will never be ashamed of it or apologetic. I am John. Thank you.

Any evidence of use of a comparator ? Objects in the foreground seem out of focus but I don’t see evidence of him painting other lens imperfections. Vermeer, who most likely used a comparator, also did not do a self portrait… it would be impossible with a comparator
