Bobby absolutely loved Franz and that says everything for me. Arch rivals , yet best of friends - both the English and the Germans needed this going forward. It's never going to be easy to forget. Once when Bayern fired Rehagel a few games before the end of the season and he became the manager in 1993 and then in 1996 I think when they fired Trapattoni as far as I remember. That was also when they won the UEFA Cup against Bordeaux.

Franz Bechenbauer, a genious, a legend, and a hero. Above all, he was a gentleman, neve faught, never pretended injuries on the field. Played some of the most elegant football the world will ever know. He makes the new football players look like pretentios, lazy, and overnight fame seeker without half the skills Franz had. RIP legend. Another player who reminds of true greatness: Johan Cruyff.

I was born in Munich and even played football in the Olympic stadium when I was 12 or 13 and played hockey in the Olympic ice rink. I would see Beckenbauer there ice-skating with his kids. 74 final was in Munich and even though my parents were American my dad's parents were Dutch and my moms parents were German. We lived in Munich. I grew up watching Bayern with my mom so of course I wanted Germany to win.

Pelé, Maradona, Beckenbauer the best players. With Beckenbauer football changed, there was a before and after him, being a defender, he was a scorer and played like 10. In the World Cup he played to the top and scored in fewer games almost the same goals as Maradona, technical and elegant. Later great coach, also world champion. Few have influenced football like him.

@@trinihammer One of thethings i notice about the modern game, is the lack of graceful, elegant players on the ball. I can't think of one, with the possible exception of De Bruyne...Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Hazard, Mbappé are not elegant or graceful on the ball, in any which way or form, though they're highly technically skilled, ball players... Back in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, you had players like Charlton, Eusébio, Rivera, Albert, Best, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Netzer, Zico, Kempes, Platini, Hoddle, Socrates, Laudrup, Zidane, who all glided & moved with such grace, poise, elegance, on the ball.

Even though it was a bit disappointing that the 1990 WC final had to be decided by a dubious penalty, I always liked the way Brehme converted it. If the circumstances were not worthy of a final, the execution certainly was. This man had nerves of steal. Argentinian goalkeaper Goycochea, a first rate penalty killer if there ever was one, made a fantastic saving effort and probably would have gotten the ball in 99% of the cases. But Brehme put the ball precisely into that spot that would have been out of reach for any goalkeeper in the world. Fantastic performance both by the taker and the goalkeeper.
