Franz Danzi (1763-1826) was a German cellist, composer and conductor. Danzi's career spanned the transition from the late Classical to the early Romantic styles. He knew Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was a contemporary of Ludwig van Beethoven, and a mentor for Carl Maria von Weber. This piece, the Wind Quintet, op. 56 no. 1, belongs to a series of quintets composed in 1821 for wind quintet.
