Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886), Apparitions, S155 (1834)
Performed by Ashley Wass
00:00 - No 1: Senza lentezza quasi allegretto
09:02 - No 2: Vivamente
13:19 - No 3: Fantaisie sur une valse de François Schubert (D365/33)
Along with the early Harmonies poétiques et religieuses and the first book of the Album d’un voyageur, Apparitions stake Liszt’s earliest claim to be regarded as a mature and original musical thinker-he was 22 years old at the time of their composition. Although it is quite clear that only a very few of his contemporaries had the slightest understanding of his intentions, and generally preferred his early studies and transcriptions, it is these other extraordinarily avant garde works which forced the doubters to reconsider, and which, along with the re-examination of the late pieces, led to the re-appraisal of Liszt in the middle of the twentieth century. The first piece has a rhythmic flexibility which often suspends the perceived metre altogether, and the theme in thirds with tremolo accompaniment is one of Liszt’s most compelling. The second is uneasily torn between being carefree and poignant, again the character led by the unusual rhythm, and the third is almost like a composer under some hallucinogenic drug, dreaming of a Schubert waltz-a unique contribution to the literature, and quite unlike the later use of the same waltz in the Soirées de Vienne.

Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way to Heaven. We've all sinned and deserve Hell. Sins like lying, lusting, etc. Repent and trust only in Jesus, and you will be saved! You can be saved because he took the punishment for our sins on himself when he died on the cross, just like someone can pay your speeding fine in court, and you get off free. Romans 3:23 John 3:16❤😊❤❤

Wow, I always assumed these had to be mature Liszt works! I can't believe he was 22 when he composed these

At that time he wanted to use these pieces to show others he indeed had compose talent. But unfortunately, no one cared about his effort

I'd like to think that Liszt had an aptitude of being a natural visionary, however hidden for the majority of his youth due to his peers unable to fathom his genius and originality. It is only later nearing his middle age where he accrued confidence and sharpened his talent to further forge his unique brand of compositional idiosyncrasy, and finally the rest is history-as music won't ever be the same without his influence.

Une œuvre rarement enregistrée. A tort. Bravo à Ashley Wass. Très belle interprétation.

I can only wonder what a 1850s revision of these pieces would’ve looked like. Maybe Liszt was content enough with the Apparitions that he never saw the need for a revision unlike with most of his other early output. Either way, along with the S.154 piece (Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses / early version of Pensee des Morts), the Apparitions are for sure the first true masterpieces Liszt wrote

I second that. Hamelin nailed that piece and because he played as the introduction, it sort of suggests that he is an apparition... I wonder if he planned that? That whole concert recording is golden.

I find this a lovely performance, freshly thought out and beautifully played. Wass's entire CD of early Liszt (Naxos) seems to me an excellent match-up of pianist and works.
