Franz Liszt - Faust-Symphonie Finale (Chorus mysticus) 

I always feel sorry for Liszt in terms of his orchestral works - he is given very little credit for the impact they have had. He invented the symphonic/tone poem, so he could be seen as the father of film music (just as Haydn is the father of the symphony). This Faust Symphony is the first published use of a 12-tone row by a major composer, I believe. Also, I love how the Mephistopheles movement is essentially a reworking of the entire Faust movement, thus allowing Liszt to apply his mastery of thematic transformation to the extreme.

The most powerful finale to any symphony ever quilled.

You can definitely hear traces of this finale in the ending of Mahler 8 - not only does Mahler choose the same text, but the rhythm is very close to Liszt’s own.
