Hi everyone and a very warm welcome to episode No. 10 of the Fraoch Knits knitting podcast.
In this podcast I talk about a few past finished objects, my current WIPs, some future project plans and some recent surprise yarn acquisitions.
I also talk about the myths and legends and folk customs associated with the national symbol for Ireland, the shamrock, and with the patron saint, St. Patrick.
The podcast also contains a piece on the fascinating story of Delia Barry, the handknitter who created all the knitted sweaters in the Oscar nominated film 'The Banshees of Inisherin'.
Sit back with a cup of hot tea/coffee and some knitting and relax and listen to all the stories from the windswept and very wet West of Ireland.
Thanks so much for watching - if you like the content on this channel please hit the subscribe and like buttons and leave a comment. Many thanks for your support:)

Thank you for such a delightful podcast!! Of course, your yarn and garments were exquisite. But today was so special to hear about St Patrick’s Day as it is the 17th. I joked with my boss how, as a child growing up in a very Italian neighborhood, we used to wear purple (the color on Lent) on March 17th as a protest to the holiday. Of course, there was only one Irish family in the neighborhood, so I don’t know who we were protesting, lol! In the US, over the decades, it has become even more of a celebration of drinking, the meaning of the day being somewhat lost. Thank you for resurrecting the story. And your film of the Italian mountains and skiing was stunning!!

Hi Joyce, your story of the protest with the colour purple is brilliant!! Thanks for your lovely comments about the podcast....I'm delighted you liked hearing the stories and it was so great to visit the Italian mountains - they were absolutely stunning -I felt so lucky to be able to get back there after nearly 13 years away from skiing due to childrearing responsibilties...

I have only made a hat in brioche st. And I want to do the newspaper sweater of Joji Locatelly, but I think I have to start with something simpler first. I loved the story on the Sham Rock! Just last Friday my sister told me that our nephew had to do some english work for school and they needed the translation for "Kleeblatt". How wonderful! Thank you for that! All your yarni things are wonderful as well! Best wishes and belated Happy Easter from Germany!

Hi Jennesse - many thanks for your lovely comments! The shawl over the back of the chair is the Shetland Shawl designed by Dutch designer Marja de Haan (her website is www.trollenwol.nl)- I talk about it in my episode on colourwork. It was the first thing that I knit when I started back knitting again after about a 40 year gap:) I got the pattern in the Knitter magazine - it was in issue 132 - I think it was December 2018. You might want to contact the designer directly as I think it's hard to get back issues of the magazine. Lovely to hear that you got to visit Ireland - it was a very different place in the 1970s.....in some ways much nicer, quieter and more laid back, but in other ways it's much better now.......

Grazie ancora ❤

Thanks for your lovely comments Monica! I'm delighted that you like the podcast. And how lovely that your daughter is coming to live in Galway for a month - she will have a fantastic time:) The most authentic Irish wool is Galway wool which you can purchase from the Life in the Long Grass website www.litlg.com - I'm not sure where else sells it. There aren't that many yarn shops in Ireland - there's a big one in Dublin and one in Cork City and another in Bantry, West Cork. Your daughter could try and make a visit to the Irish Fibre Crafters shop in Ardrahan, Co. Galway, www.irishfibrecrafters.com. They sell only local yarns and wool for spinning and they would have some very special yarns that you would not get anywhere else. I hope your daughter has a lovely time!

Merri, thank you very much for your lovely comments. I hope your son is doing well - it's very hard when loved ones are sick - and I hope you are looking after yourself. I think its amazing that you learned plant healing from a native american tribe - that is something wonderful....their knowledge is precious and it needs to be cherished and passed on to the next generation... I don't have an email address but you're welcome to contact me by direct message on instagram @fraochknits or on my ravelry account of the same name.

what is the name of your beautiful tuxedo kitty.

Hi Meg, his name is Godot! As in the Beckett play Waiting for Godot. The name was given to him by one of the teenagers in the family we adopted him from. He was born to a feral cat who was taken in by our neighbour and I adopted two of the kittens. Godot was so christened because he was always the last one to come in at night - hence they were all 'waiting for Godot'..... He does look really handsome in this video doesn't he? We absolutely love him although he is very demanding and drives us all a bit crazy at times:)
