Frass Sifter 3.0 -- Overhead View

Brace yourself for another sifter video!
I didn't have any dramatically chunky bins -- those tend to not have good frass to sift off anyway. There was one bin that started out at 16 lbs and sifted down to 9 lbs. (An empty bin weighs ~2 lbs) After 30 bins, that weight piles up.

Please could you do a harvesting video and a drying video. My mind cant get this part and it would give me the knowledge i need to understand this part of the process. Kindest regards allways

I'm trying to make my drying process more efficient, but I'll add this to the list of videos. Are you planning to sell dried larvae?

Thanks for your reply Selling dried would be one of many goals I'd love to produce enough to supply live larvae fish breeders but the money seems to be in dried for bird feed and also hedgehog food and also there's the longer storage capabilities all I get find is larvae microwaves or roasting them over a fire. I'm really up for giving it ago but I'm a bit of a worrier so need to be as confident as i can be about each process. Do you only harvest pre pupa for drying ? Your givening me a lot of inspiration from watching your videos and one day id like to be in the same position as you. Once again thank you for sharing your knowledge your a realist and give genuine information out of the goodness of your heart. Keep it up 😊

The best time to harvest larvae for drying is right after sifting most of the other material out: frass goes in a bin for drying, larger residue goes out for compost, larvae then become easier to remove from the bin with very little remaining residue. They get rinsed in water to remove any frass/residue on their bodies and then batch dried in microwaves. My electric infrastructure is lacking so my productivity isn't real high right now. It takes a little time to get a large order done

Thanks I get it finally . is there a time when you decide to do the last sieve eg when you spot first pre pupa so that the larvae are the biggest?

I can't stop thinking about larvae in a microwave. I just imagine larvae popping like popcorn 😊

My bsfs haven't produced eggs, they've been mating for 2 days already

Maybe wait a couple more days. And then look in any crack/crevice/hole they have available. Just because you provide a preferred egg-laying space doesn't mean the females will use it.
