Hello there! Welcome to a new episode of Fratello Talks. This week, we have decided to discuss a topic we often get asked about - gifting watches. Nacho, RJ, and Daan explore the topic, discussing to whom you should gift a watch and when it's appropriate to do so. Of course, they also provide some examples from their experience and share some stories of times when they have given and received watches as gifts, the former being the more common occurrence. Finally, they also provide some recommendations for the kinds of watches you should consider if looking to give someone this special gift. I got my fiancée a vintage cartier Panthere as an engagement gift - with a small engraving on the back. Luckily it went down well and never leaves her wrist!

RJ is funny. "Family, loved ones, they might be the same".... I had to laugh. I will say that if you sell the watch you got from your parents, it could also simply mean your parents are no good. Giving someone a watch is an intensely personal thing. You need to put a significant amount of thought into it. You must know them, their taste, and their style. I would shy away from it unless I'm iron-clad sure about it. That said, my wife and I did exactly that. We've picked up a pair of Cartiers (Tank for her, Santos for me) together, and it was a lovely little event. Lastly, the notion of "we gifted eachother Speedmasters without knowing it" speaks of a healthy disregard for the value of money. You must have plenty of it to end up in that headspace. Most folks can't just casually get someone a gift for thousands of Euros. If someone buys me a watch I don't like, I will politely decline, or flog it. I don't care who buys it for me. If someone doesn't bother to know me when they give me something, they just give me a burden, not an actual gift.

Why did they automatically have to go to expensive, luxury watches? What's wrong with a $300 watch? The jump from swatches to Cartiers and Rolexes is a little insane

It’s not a go to gift. Just because you are into watches doesn’t mean others are (significant others). Your partner should know if you’re really into watches, and hopefully they gift a watch to you that you like. If it’s a gift you don’t like, you need to make a decision, keep, and not wear, or trade in to get what you’d really like. It’s difficult for sure!

I plan on gifting my first luxury watch (2007 quartz Omega SMP) to my son when he graduates. It will need a service, but do I have it polished & restored or do I leave the scratches and beat up appearance?
