Fraud Week continues with a focus on the NXIVM cult, featuring former cult members Sarah Edmondson and Anthony "Nippy" Ames, hosts of "A Little Bit Culty." They discuss how they first came to NXIVM, the oddities of the group, the positives they experienced at first, the importance of screening before allowing people and groups into your brain and heart, the charismatic NXIVM leader Keith Raniere, Raniere's lawyer who had a showdown with Megyn on her NBC show, the way Raniere and others in the group manipulated them, how fraudsters look to target certain kinds of people, the traumatic moment she was secretly branded with NXIVM cult leader Raniere's initials, when they decided they had to leave the cult, the brainwashing and sex trafficking happening in the NXIVM cult, the Hollywood family who took to the media to speak out on the cult, the vindication when Raniere finally went to jail, and more.

For years i held contempt for you Megyn for the presidential debate when you fiercely went after Trump with questions in defence of Rosie O'Donnell. I can't stand Rosie for many reasons, to many to type here. And after that debate i couldn't stand you. I'm glad i took a chance and gave you another chance. I've grown to respect and love you. It's a testament of christian faith that allowed an old man like me to learn forgive others as my Lord forgives me. This allowed me to see what a fierce and true warrior for good you are and true to scripture thie gave me strength. Your proof that Gods Word is true, may God bless you and keep you ❤

@@limeOjelloMegyn didn’t need YOUR forgiveness,as you did not hold any negative feelings for her, but this commenter needed to let go of his contempt for her. He may still need to forgive Rosie ODonnell, too. The one who is forgiven does not even have to have done anything wrong …it’s a very personal thing to be able to let go of your hurt, hate, contempt, etc especially when the person one forgives isn’t even going to be apologetic, or aware of how you feel and they won’t be grateful for your forgiveness nor will they stop doing the offensive thing. Forgiveness not the act of realizing someone didn’t do anything bad or wrong. Forgiveness is all about the forgiver’s need to set aside his negative feelings, or let them move on toward positive outcomes, and not let negative emotions prevent good from overcoming bad. Forgiveness in this case, is a sign of healing for the one who has forgiven and let go of contempt. Megyn didn’t need to ask for his forgivenes, but he still needed to give it. I hope this made sense!😝

Megyn keeps emphasizing how really smart and rich people got conned. In my experience, people who are affluent and well educated are more susceptible to con artists. Those who are street smart and who are aware of these kinds of people since they were young would see the con and would not give up their money so easily. Being disadvantaged has its advantages. I would see this guy and his minions coming a mile away. If I did get sucked in my friends and family would get me out ASAP

Bingo. I've noticed a trend, and on some level I get it. A large portion of the victims will say "they were SO smart, so cunning." It makes it easier to admit that they were fooled. "I'm not stupid, they are just brilliant!!" Not calling the victims stupid, just saying, I think they are more susceptible. But the first play is to defend their own intelligence.

This is such an important story, as the organizational dynamic discussed here is A) more prevalent than one might think and B) it does not, and often doesn’t, occur in the context of a “cult.” Men like this generally choose women who have have strength and strong intellect, but also possess things a perpetrator doesn’t have…..light, innocence, and a genuine “goodness.” My heart breaks for Sarah as I watch her get triggered. This was the rape of a soul. I imagine one of the most profoundly destructive result of this experience is losing trust in yourself/your own instincts. At a fundamental level this is such a part of our survival in the world. When individual human instinct is decimated to this degree, and the ability to trust oneself is taken away, it’s absolutely terrifying to exist in the world. Instinct is the one thing many women like Sarah can always count on. It takes a long time….a very long time, to get this back. Anyone watching this please heed these red flags. Experiences like this happen to women far more often than one might think….and as I stated, happens in many different contexts. A cult is one, an extreme one, and people may find it novel as they watch this. It isn’t novel. It has happened to many women, under various circumstances. Sarah…..God bless you, brave one, and thank you for having the courage to share your story. ❤

Sarah said she's "not religious," which makes it so easy for a group like NXIVM to fill that void in her life. Glad they got out of it. They seem very vulnerable still. Not sure the reason they are talking about this, doing podcasts, etc., comes from a place of healing. Not sure this show was the right thing to do. No disrespect, but I also highly doubt the lady is being wholly factual. Anyone who spent many years involved in that cult (and who was recruiting other girls as she stated), got a very intimate branding, and kept being involved needs years of psychological reprogramming. They are NOT ready to "tell their story". Megyn, you meant no harm, but overly flattered her which fed her damaged ego. I mean, this isn't the story of "We got involved in the world's worst Time Share". This is the story of "So my wife branded the initials of our leader into her crotch, didn't tell me about it for 6 months (so much to discuss there), and what am I going to do about it? Oh, nothing..." When we were young, my wife and I took the theatre program at a church. It was a private church and not much was known about it other than the leaders were very educated and seemed credible. It took a couple weeks to figure out that it was a cult. We hightailed it out immediately when I saw the leader talking to my wife longingly, asking her to join a private group. Immediately I said, we are leaving or I'm going to beat his AZ. Later it came out that this indeed had been a cult. People who get sucked into cults have mental problems before they start. No judgment on them, but not sure the victims should be giving any lectures on the danger of cults. I mean, you let somebody strip you naked, let them brand your body?

Thanks for covering this Megyn. Around 1997 the Scientology cult shut down the Cult Awareness Network which provided information and warnings about such predatory organizations. Since then we must depend on people of good will and courage to expose them, and ex-members will always be the most important voices in that work. It is difficult to admit that one was fooled by a cult, but speaking out is part of the healing process and helps to warn others about the predators out there.

However, Kirstin was reported to later just having "minimal contact" with the people in the group and then cut off all ties while Allison Mack maintained a full-time relationship with the organization. When the controversy hit the public Kristin later released a statement that she did not witness any illegal behavior / abuse during the short time she was in attendance with the Nxivm group and one of the high-profile victims completely backed Kristin on her assertion.

MK has had several visceral reactions throughout this interview. I believe she has repressed memories of working in a place where people were severely controlled. I had a similar experience in a professional job where a Masters Degree was a prerequisite. It seems difficult to understand why we wouldn't just leave. It's not about money or power, it's actually about having your self worth dependent on following expectations from a powerful boss and their lackeys. Always reminded in some way, you are the subordinate. Having many peers working along side you in that toxic environment makes it seem normal at the time. I see the similarities. I totally understand MK's analogy to her time at FOX. Am glad if others haven't had that work experience but please don't judge.

There were aspects of this that made me think back to pledging a fraternity when I was a kid - which I did of my own free will (I wouldn’t say that frats are necessarily cults). But a similarity that struck me was how we were all aware that if you’d told us at the beginning of the process what we’d have to go through toward the end of the process, we’d have run for the hills. You justify each successively bad thing that you go through by the almost-as-bad thing you just went through. And after a point, what keeps you going is at least in part the threat of having gone through all of it for nothing. It was a long time ago but I remember distinctly that once I got through it myself I never wanted to be around to take part in or even see any of the hazing - just couldn’t stomach it, and I think I felt kind of ashamed that I had degraded myself to be part of a group. I don’t know if fraternities have changed; it’s been almost 25 years for me now, but this really made me think about that in re the extent to which “culty” methods and processes are embedded into different parts of our culture. I wonder if I’m alone in making this association to that experience.

It is so hard to explain how you could fall into being so brainwashed and manipulated. People who haven't suffered from this can't believe it. I am here to say it is real. I hear in Sarah the need to explain herself... the horror with herself and the shame..... This shit is so powerful and gripping. After all this time it is still there. Yes and it will stay, but it is working depth of color into your fabric. Prayers for a continued evolution of knowing and peace as you accept WITHOUT SHAME that this will now and forever be a part of you as it is/was a powerful experience. Allow God to take what the devil meant for evil and use it for good and His Glory.

In fact, when I was 7 years old, I was kicked out of Brownies (what my mom made me join before getting into Girl Scouts because she said all my friends were doing it.) I told the Brownie leader that I wanted to do something worthwhile, not coloring and stupid construction paper art. And that was that. My mom was horrified. I had zero regrets.

I agree! When I saw her on one of the many documentary series, she tried to paint herself as a complete and utter victim. IMO, she should have been charged along with the other females. I believe that she quickly threw others under the bus in order to save herself and her husband and then she subsequently went on to portray herself as a victim. Yet, she made a massive amount of money through the period scheme as she was at the top.
@andreahunter2471
@andreahunter2471 11 дней назад
@@RAY-uh3npI believe they addressed that one woman went to jail because she remained loyal to Keith. This couple did the right thing when they pulled themselves out, and then went on to pursue shutting down Keith and the whole criminal operation. Nippy kept using the word “diabolical”…when you are a victim of such dark forces of seduction, if it takes the threat of jail and immunity deals to bring down the mastermind and the whole organization, then so be it. You can’t judge their sincerity without knowing them personally, or having recorded evidence on them like they had on Keith and Allison. So, why not be glad they saw the light and then shined it on the darkness to expose the evil and get rid of it. She didn’t go to jail because she redeemed herself and we shouldn’t look to victimize people any further when they seek redemption.
