Was in art history class, was asked to write a term paper about an artist. I, of course, picked Frank. Was told he was unacceptable because he was a " commercial artist", not a "fine artist". Whatever that's supposed to mean. Took it to the administration, showed that just about everything he painted was used after he painted them for book covers etc., then showed them the documentary about his life, focusing on his museum on his farm, where pretty much all of paintings were displayed. Never sold them, let pictures be taken and used for book covers and what-not. Asked how that was any different from the Mona Lisa or any other "fine" art appearing on book covers etc. Not one of those stuffed shirts could answer. Won the argument, wrote the paper, professor failed it for spite, admin graded it to a B. Tell me what art is or isn't. Frank will never be forgotten, and loved always...

When I think of the art of Frank Frazetta, I immediately think of the numerous Molly Hatchet album covers that featured his works. As for The Gauntlet, it's always been one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies. I'd forgotten that the posted featured a Frazetta original. Thanks for sharing the stories around how that came to be.

I met my best friend from junior high because of your grandfather's first two books. They were so cool that he crossed that forbidden cultural line that exist in all Midwestern schools: a 9th grader willing to be seen talking to a 7th grader (without trying to harass them in some way, naturally). Still friends today.

As one of those lucky kids who grew up during Mr. Frazetta's peak, every Christmas mom and dad would get me either an art book or calendar, my brother however had to one up them one year when he got me a one sheet of The Gauntlet, that one got mounted and decorated my wall for years until sadly a water leak in my apartment during the 90s destroyed it - and stupid me didn't have apt. insurance - that was a hard lesson learned. Still remains one of my "holy grail" Frazetta art lifetime memories.
@FrazettaGirls

Your brother sure did one up them with that. I'm sorry you lost it to water damage. Water can be quite the SOB but Im also glad you had it for as long as you did. Mr. Frazetta sounds like my late father. He was very creative in his story telling about his life, and never let something as tedious as consistency get in the way of a good yarn. As I grew up I heard the same tales told over and over, and they always got better and more dramatic as time went on!

I cant tell you how many books I read because your grandfather painted the cover. He was my favorite artist. He just had a great talent for capturing both the comedic and serious human form. You could look at his cover understand the heart of movie or book. The talent to capture both a comedic theme and also a heroic action theme was incredible.

Interesting. Frazetta was a huge inspiration for many in the 70's. He seemed to create a unique heroic style that spread to other parts of the world and endures to this day. What made him stand out more was the detailed accuracy which made some photos appear almost like photos. With him you knew you were looking at a real deal great artist. I remember one film, perhaps Conan, that recreated one of his paintings in real life, just for a few seconds. I think it was a man sitting, a woman and maybe a big cat. Very cool.

@@FrazettaGirls That cover is iconic. But I think (and going by memory here...yikes!) it was originally the cover of one of the Warren magazines. Either CREEPY, EERIE, or VAMPIRELLA. I seem to remember he'd done many covers for them. Black and white stories with art from many of the greats, including Berni Wrightson. He might even have drawn a story or two but not sure. His Warren work might be an interesting topic for a future video.. Didnt Frank also design Vampirella? The magazine HEAVY METAL gets a lot of attention, and even a couple movies. The Warren magazines not so much. Thats a shame because they had some of the best writing and art (all in B&W) post-EC Comics. And always fantastic painted covers. Those books should be held in higher regard or better appreciated.

You could almost feel the cold and the power of those tremendous beasts pulling that burly warrior in the battle sled! I really look forward to Fridays with Frazetta girls! Fire and Ice was a Movie created by Frank and another guy. I think it came out in the 70s I have it on VHS and DVD . Being 74 years old I was raised on all the Disney movies of Old and all the Western shows that were on in the 50s-60s-and the 70s . I was fortunate enough to have spoken to Frank before He got ill from the thinner he used on his Acrylic paint that eventually killed him , I spoke to His Wife just after he Died. The Phantom was one of my favorite comic books. I have a lot of his pictures that I framed throughout the homes I own. One of my younger brothers was always good at drawing and I have quite a few that are Frank drawings and posters. Disney and Warner Brothers made Excellent productions. The Loss of Frank at such a young age was a loss for Humanity.
