Incredible how humane Frazier was. After the monster left in the 4th, he stopped punching at Jerry to see if he'd fall over and all but gave him a second to recover. Then, before the fight ended and Jerry was badly cut, Joe pointed at Jerry for Joe Louis to see, and walked away like he didn't want to punch him any more, knowing Jerry would never, ever quit.
@@snivelinj7612 You talking out of your arse. Ali was million times better than jealous bitter Frazier. Ali spared so many by not hurting them when he could have. He only talked bad to sell the fights.
Quarry is one tough dude. Those body shots of Frasier were landing with a thud and how Quarry didn't fall from that left hook is incredible. He was too tough for his own good and it cost him dearly later on.
If boxing had been carried out in a phone boothe Joe Frazier would have been an undefeated champion for a very long time. The greatest heavyweight brawler.
@@Mr.Twister.former.minister The Frazier of the second Foreman fight was not the real Frazier anymore. He used a much smarter strategy than he had in their first fight, but he was too old and fat to make it work. If he had followed that strategy the first time around it would have been a helluva fight, or at least a better fight.
People don't actually understand how good a fighter Quarry was. He stood in there with the best of the best, fighting THEIR game, not his. He could've beaten half the guys he lost/drew to, but he chose to fight instead of box. That being said Frazier was many levels above him, but Quarry never withered. He stood there in front of Smokin Joe the entire time both fights. I have huge respect for Jerry Quarry. He was like Evander Holyfield in the 70s
In 1973 Quarry beat Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers. So, coming into this fight after the loss to Ali in 1972, Quarry had six straight wins in the last 12 months. Quarry was in very good shape and confident. This fight shows the difference in world class to an elite level fighter. Frazier in 1974 was past his best of 1971; however, he did look good here and was far too good for a very good Jerry Quarry.
Quarry's biggest problem was his stamina. He was doing quite well at the start, but as the fight goes on, he just fades. And at the same time Frazier is just getting warmed up, starting to smoke.
It's not just his stamina. Frazier's constant pressure also plays a big part. It's exhausting when a guy just keeps coming and don't give you a second to breathe... That's what she said. Yeah, I know.
It wasn’t his biggest problem caused by no conditioning, he was a heavy asthmatic who sadly every time he had a championship fight or big fight had trouble with his asthma, he never got his fair shot when he was in his best condition, he definitely could hang with the best, at his best
I long for those old days and my idol Joe Frazier , these videos of Joe looking great are very emotional. Joe was special. Rip Smokin Joe you deserve it !
Yep. People are often inobservant. Quarry didn't know how to move with a punch and had a lot of defensive flaws other than that, including an overconfidence of taking a punch. Not smart. He didn't take loss in a rational way either, which heightened his anger and recklessness.
@@shakeAbooty88 ..."He didn't take loss in a rational way either, which heightened his anger and recklessness." -shakeAbooty88 You just described one of the classic symptoms of CTE.
Honestly i watch this fight at least once everyday,1 of the most entertaining fights I've ever seen from the fighter introductions to the fight itself, the amount of times Quarry got clocked with that left hook from round 1 to 5 is astonishing.
Quarry was a decent contender, knocking out Shavers & beating Lyle, he was tough but fell short of the best, also an indication of how good Frazier was.
@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson & yet Quarry had a wide range of skills - he could fight inside & outside, & had a good variety of punches - just fell short against Ali & Frazier (twice each) like you said. World class Frazier & Quarry would have been very good in this era - maybe 20lbs heavier with the supplements available these days - I think Frazier would have chopped down Wilder with ease - Wilder with no balance or infighting skills, Frazier would only have had to worry about Wilder's right hand, unlike George Forman, who had power everywhere & was too much for Frazier. Frazier vs Usyk would have been a heck of a fight with a good contrast of styles..
@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson Quarry was a decent contender who sparred without headgear because he really believed he was so special that he could take more punishment than other men. That same delusion followed him into his contests, where he didn't ever learn to move with punches or switch into defensive mode. I feel pity for him, but I cannot admire his intelligence nor his mental approach. A sad creature.
@@shakeAbooty88 Yeah, & Jerry tried to imitate Ali with the bouncing, but it got him into trouble - only Ali could fight like Ali. I read an article once - his brother-in-law, Robert Pearson, said Jerry & his brother Mike (175lbs contender) used to spar countless rounds together, & those sparring sessions were brutal - booze & drugs wouldn't have helped their physical condition either. The brother-in-law said he has grown to hate boxing - not surprising, after what happened to Jerry & Mike. But boxing is a sport you can't take lightly - like Roy Jones said : sparring should be kept to a minimum - & if you learn defense, you have a better chance of coming out of the sport relatively intact.
The difference between Quarry of the first and second Frazier bouts physically is stark. Five years earlier he was trim, muscular, fast and powerful. Although he had some significant wins after 1969, the wear and tear of the wars definitely broke him down.
@@renzopeterson153thats the most impressive thing. Frazier took arguably the worst beating out of all the heavies of that time by Foreman, yet he was able to come back and still be at the very top.
Anyone else notice again why Ali is the greatest? He told the ring announcer that johnny bratton and Ike Williams were in the audience so they could get their due. What an amazing incredible thoughtful man.
Somewhere around the 3rd round, it reached a point where Quarry couldn’t even snap his punches anymore. He looked like he was fighting with some sort of handicap…maybe broken ribs. Frazier’s body shots did some internal damage for sure.
Jeepers, joe lewis ref! Someone told him to get out of the way in that last round! Very funny. And evil knieval , crazy broadcast with all the pros jumping in aswell! What a treat. This channel is great as you always get the before and after. Awsome
When it came to Quarry one thing about Ali and Frazier they had a lot of class in the ring, when he was looking helpless they would motion to the referee to stop it
@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson yep, Mercer should have held back with those last several punches when he saw Morrison was gone. People blame the referee but if you watch closely he was trying to stop Mercer but he kept punching anyway. Cooney vs Norton knockout is also very disturbing, check it out
Like Mickey (Burgess Meredith) said to Rocky, "women weaken legs." Gerry was told by his trainer to lay of the sex 2 weeks b4 the fight. He was referring to his new blond movie star wife, Charlie, who they showed in the crowd. In the 2018 book, "Smoking Joe," it was said that THAT is exactly what happened to Quarry: too much Blondie before this fight. Whatever the case, he was a game gladiator.
Yes i wondered what on earth has happened to jerry in this fight. It isnt the jerry quarry who had recently beaten ron lyle - and shavers i think. He never got off first, wanted to stay away, thats the worst of quarry. Not typical, and one commentator here hints it was not obeying clancy's advice re abstaining from sex. Maybe that played a major part. Certainly it would take the meanness and grit away from this normally lion hearted fighter
Floyd Patterson, on boxing---- ""It's like being in love with a woman. She can be unfaithful, she can be cruel, but it doesn't matter. If you love her, you want her, even though she can do you all kinds of harm. It's the same with me and boxing. It can do me all kinds of harm but I love it."
@@DrSeuss-nv9hw well thats a great point, joe still a great fighter, thriller in manila etc but...but...a more ruthless character than jerry mightve smelled blood here, joe not the same fighter after the first ali fight...joe bugner gave him a big argument in summer 1973 even though smokin joe clearly won. Post ali 1, joe was living on reputation.
Good fight, though Quarry was far past his prime and Frazier was slipping (whatever he had left was reserved for Ali). Frazier's timing and footwork are truly remarkable. Goddamn I love watching Smokin Joe fight. What a clever, relentless warrior. Was Jou Louis in a coma? Good Lord lol. All time legend, but holy cow he was a bad ref. Frazier's trunks are atrocious. Should've stuck with the black trunks with the gold stripe. Tonight, to celebrate my return to work tomorrow, I shall watch the Thrilla. Hurts to see Frazier lose, but what a fight. What a fight. Why can't boxing be like this anymore?
Just six months earlier, Quarry had destroyed Earnie Shavers in the first round. That Quarry, according to his biography (Hard Luck) was gone, having become an old fighter. Another problem, Shavers had below average stamina, Frazier had it to spare.
A newspaper writer described this fight as, "Two woolly mammoths struggling to get out of a tar pit." He said Quarry should have had a catcher's mitt on his face.
@@serenityinside1He refereed 50 fights from 1935 to 1976. He wasn't clueless, he was old and at the end of the line here. He'd be wheelchair bound in 4 years after this fight and dead 3 years after that. I'm sure a younger Louis would have been a lot more aware.
@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson ...Fantastic fight but the old time boxers, who are all long dead, are in this! Most of them look reasonably young and spry. Nice.
If you could look at it from a fighter's standpoint, Joe wanted to give him every chance to win because I'm sure he himself would want a referee to let the fight play out through the end.
How Quarry didn't go down in the 4th round off that Frazier left shows how much he could take a punch. Anybody else is going down. Frazier showed his respect for Quarry remarking how tough he was and saying he could've been a champion, but he cut too easily.
Quarry is his own worst enemy with his stubbornness. Meaning, he always tried to outbox a boxer and outslug a slugger. That's gotta drive his people nuts.
Frazier looked like he let Quarry off the hook when he badly stunned him at the end of round four? He obviously knew Quarry was done, and didn't want to risk seriously hurting him. Good compassion from Frazier. I thought he'd be totally ruthless when he got an opponent hurt, but clearly not always the case. Just as well here, I think.
He did the same thing with Joe Bugner, stunned him badly, Bugner was slowy going down, there was plenty of time to land another devastating left hook and send Bugner to the hospital if not the morgue, but Frazier hesitated. What an amazing human being he was. Hats of Joe.
No, he was a gentleman who loved and respected boxing. He wasn't the best of his era and I was born long after the sun set on his career, but he will always be my guy.
Joe Louis the referee knows well the haters, he let it clear so everyone can see that Jerry the Irish was well done. In fight Number 1 Frazier stopped Quarry in the 7th round 5 years pryer. (Smokey Joe was a thank back then). (May their soul R.I.P)
So the last 30 seconds after Quarry is really hurt, Frazier like , well shit have to finish it right? That was a brutal ass beating at the end. That should have never happened. This is why Quarry could not even brush his teeth in his 50's before he died. Fucking sad.
Jerry was a normal sized man in with the monster's ( although Joe was relatively the same size, Joe hit harder) of course you're gonna get brain damage. A brave tough man who was too tough for his own good!!
Jerry Quarry what a great tough fighter so much respect my man really mean that. Frazier that night was a beast. Look back in those days look at the great heavyweights no messing about. Look at 2023 look at the ship we have to put up with absolute crap
Quarry was a brawler, but he never weighed more than 200 pounds-he was a little light to be a top heavyweight at this time. His punches lacked the power needed. Frazier weighed about 219 lbs for this fight and it was ALL demonstrated in his power shots.
boxers in louis's times and joe himself used to do fasting and came lighter in the fight. But In some exhibitions louis was walking around 230 pounds in excellent shape. He was a big guy but there was a different way of training and thinking back then
Jerry & his trademark cuts in the eye; always frustrating & shortchanging fans. Not much credit to Frazier, a low class boxer but powerful brawler. He always hurtles headlong into the enemy which was why Foreman, a more powerful puncher practically lifted him up in the air & almost killed him
But what else can you expect? Stick a human in a jungle and eventually they'll start living like animals.Joe had obviously become desensitised to the violence.
In Joe Louis' day, that's what would happen. They let guys continue as long as you could stand. By the 1970s, people had come, slightly, more to their senses. In Louis' day, if you wanted to fight 30 times per year, that was cool. Times have changed.
Louis once said Ali would just be another bum of the month if they fought while Louis was in his prime. I don't think Ali ever forgot that comment. Wasn't part of hyping up some fight. It was just a rude comment. Louis was also wrong, if you ask me. I think Ali would've beaten him if they fought while both were in their prime, but I haven't seen much footage of Louis so I may be off. He just seems too slow to catch a young Ali and I think Ali's resume is more impressive.
@@bengoldberg6198 Nah that comment was clearly a joke and response to Ali saying he could beat Joe. They were teasing each other. They certainly had a fallout later on though and Ali called Louis an "uncle Tom". It was back when Ali was at his most fanatical with the religious and separatist group. They later became friends again but perhaps that hadn't happened yet as of this fight. As for Ali beating Louis, perhaps that could happen. Ali was fast, smart and durable, but to think Louis would be too slow to catch Ali is somewhat false because Henry Cooper and Chuvalo were catching up to him, and they are not faster nor better than Joe. Ken Norton beat Ali and the guy basically stood still. Joe had all the skills and intelligence necessary to beat Ali. He is the greatest heavyweight of all time.
Quarry talked all that racist garbage before the fight so it was good to see him get beaten up! He was coming off wins over Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers, and he started demanding a title shot. When he was told that Ali (who had stopped Quarry TWICE) would be getting a title shot first, Quarry went on a tirade about “black fighters getting opportunities they didn’t deserve” and that “it’s time that the WHITE MAN stand up and be proud!” He was given this fight against Frazier instead of a Foreman fight, and Frazier tore him apart!
Quarry bounced on the balls of his feet too much - the problem with that you can't set yourself quickly to punch - Frazier knew that & was able to time Quarry every time he bounced. Much better to slide or step around, but don't bounce.
That was my observation also. He tended to throw round shots when he stopped bouncing instead of sliding, keeping his hands up and converting them to straight shots. Quarry's defense was also very poor as he tended to stand in front of opponents with his hands down. He couldn't get away from that against top notch opponents.
Joe Louis was inept in this fight. Allowed JQ to take waaaaay too much punishment. I love how angelo Dundee barks at Louis to "Move outta the way" and "work the other side of the ring." The legendary Don Dunfee screaming at Loius to stop the fight. How does a drug addict (heroine) like Joe Louis get a job as a ref in a fight where a fighter could die. He surely wasn't sanctioned, that would take work ethic and commitment.
@@carloshenriquethomaz2578 Er....Ah.....Quarry was unable to defend himself. Joe Louis just a druggie at this point of his life. Race has nothing to do with it. It's a sport and it's a job. You gotta be qualified to ref a fight where a man can die. Joe Louis cannot ref.
I wouldn’t say he has no skills, because he wouldn’t have gotten as far as he did; however, I will say that like most professional athletes that he had weaknesses in his game. Who in the 90s didn’t have weaknesses and could beat him?
Usually, it's the athlete that is last to notice. He struggles in ways, again and again, that used to be unthinkable. Believing, if he just trains harder, longer or changes diet, that "it" will come back; that he, once again, will be the best version of himself. Meanwhile, even those closest to him can see the inexorable erosion, but lack the nerve or heart to speak it. For they, too, are dreamers.
I would admire quarry's heart but he was a prick and talked shit about and made excuses about everyone he lost to for example saying ali was nothing special and couldn't punch despite ali making him look like an amateur and beating the dogshit out of him
