How viable would you say tank drive is for this game versus swerve, specifically for endgame charge station and how difficult it is to line up for scoring game pieces quickly? For my team’s week one competition, we tried using a dual speed WCP drivetrain, but it ended up being unfortunately useless except for being a shuttle bot considering 80-85% of the competition had swerve, making playing defense nearly impossible and scoring basically useless for our team, sadly putting us in the bottom of our comp.
I think it would certainly be a hinderance. The community and substation zones are tight so having to wait for a tank drive to maneuvre/rotate to score would be a pain. One things for sure, any mecanum will be slipping out on the charge station.
I think tank drive is definitely has a small disadvantage in this game compared to swerve, but you can still excel as a tank drive bot. Check out team 3357 COMETS, who dominated all their district events even with a tank drive. My team also ran a west coast tank drive this year and we ranked #1 at the end of quals at our first regional. It does depend on driver skill to a pretty good extent; many have told us that our driver drives our tank like a swerve, and some teams’ scouters have even mistakenly wrote that we have a swerve drive in their data 😆
