I have Freaks on DVD and never get tired of watching it. Some of the acting is atrocious but the characters themselves are quite real. I'd love to see all 26 minutes of the missing footage, especially toward the end, but it's reportedly lost forever. The strongman character has average-looking arms but for some reason seems to have a high opinion of himself. One of the best characters is the guy with no arms or legs. One close up scene is him lighting a cigarette using just his mouth. The little Austrian couple are cute but both are just terrible actors. Probably the scene everyone remembers best (even if they've never seen it) is the banquet scene where everyone's drunk and the freaks are all going "Gooble, gobble, gooble, we accept her, we accept her." I've seen two modern satires of the scene (one on SNL) and several references to the "gooble gobble" chant. And I would bet that most people are familiar with Schlitzie the Pinhead's imageI have Freaks on DVD and never get tired of watching it. Though always dressed like a girl (for bathroom reasons), Schlitzie's actually make. And of course there's also the conjoined twins, the Hilton Sisters. Except for being stuck together they're quite normal and actually attractive. Wallace Ford, a popular stage and screen actor of the day, plays Frozo, the clown with a heart of gold, a role very similar to Jimmy Stewart's clown in The Greatest Show on Earth. Producer-director Tod Browning is most famous for 1931's Dracula, the film that made Bela Lugosi famous.
First of all, so called "Wallace Ford" wasn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name, Samuel Grundy Jones. Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Studio or Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?! The ONLY reason a name change should be done, is for a woman when she gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her name, then she doesn't accept the sanctity of marriage or respect for her husband.
