He was 27 when he wrote Adam's Song and he was inspired by a teen suicide story he read on the newspaper and also about his loneliness on tour, because the lyric "The tour was over we'd survived, can't wait till I get home to pass the time in my room alone" is refering that he didn't have someone waiting for him at home compared to his bandmates who had girlfriends.
@@182Stanny Thats a different story, thats about the teen who commited suicide while blasting adam's song through his speakers in the garage, after his best friend died in the columbine shooting. Before that Mark read a magazine where a teen wrote a note to his parents before he commited sucidide.
Ok pretty common fact but in “adams song” the lyrics “I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine I didn’t think enough” Is a reply to Nirvanas lyrics in “come as you are” “Take your time, hurry up, choice is yours, don’t be late” You probably all know this but i found this really cool
one of the main reasons this album sounded so great musically (especially compared to their new work) is because of the producer/engineer/mixer Jerry Finn. He started working with them on this album and essentially became the 4th member of blink-182, working on their next two albums, their only live album and two albums from the band members side projects. He tragically died in 2008 of a brain hemorrhage, at only 39 too, leaving the world a worse place
I’ve been getting into Blink a bit and yeah I was not a fan of Tom’s voice at all but I am really starting to find enjoyment in it which I did not see coming
The thing about blink-182 is, it’s by no means pristine masterful art, but it’s just fun. For me at least, their music invokes this feeling of carefree nostalgia that I find kind of special. Tom isn’t a good singer, but there’s something about his voice that really adds to that in a way. This isn’t a classic album because it’s some epic masterpiece, it’s a classic because it’s just smart, funny, catchy, well-written easy-listening pop rock that connects with a lot of people. I don’t listen to Blink all the time, but I usually have a good time when I do. They’re a very fun band, that’s all I really have to say. It’s fun. But I can’t defend anything post-Neighborhoods though. The new stuff just plain sucks.
@@MusicJunkie37 Man, Dogs Eating Dogs isn’t the best thing I’ve ever heard but it really is interesting and is overall a very good EP. I hope Blink’s new album takes some cues from it.
A few note here that I'll add to as I watch but: 1. I think it's really interesting that Brad likes Tom's voice more than Mark's, since critics of Blink usually have more of a problem with the Whininess of Tom's voice. I'm glad that he can recognize that it fits the music. 2. Tickets to see them are expensive for 2 reasons. The first is that their new tour is a reunion tour that fans of blink have been waiting for for a decade now so it's in very high demand, and second, because they're using that dynamic pricing bs that always inflates popular tours to insane prices as soon as tickets become available. 3. NINE may not be the best album ever, but holy crap is it better than their last one before that, California. I love Blink, they're probably my favorite band of all time, but California is legitimately one of the worst albums I've ever had to sit through. Even including the deluxe version which is like 30 songs, there's maybe 2 good ones on the whole thing. 4. This is just an interesting fact, but the reason that the lady on the cover doesn't have a red cross on the her hat on Spotify like she does on AOTY is because the Red Cross actually sued Blink for using the symbol, so they had to remove it. Overall really glad to see Brad give some love to a Blink album after years of "I don't give a F@#K about Blink-182". Very cool :)
there is no chance NINE is over California deluxe my dude. there might be lower lows on California but the highs are untouchable compared to the ones on NINE. cynical, she’s bored out of her mind, teenage satellites, no future, misery, wildfire. skiba is obviously no Tom and there was definitely a regression in maturity with California but that weird pop sound on NINE is so overbearing and strange to me
@@kdot5704 It's funny cause Edging is Just as bad as the lows on California if not worse. I love Blink to death but I can't defend that song. Makes me mad too cause Toms recent Angels and Airwaves Stuff has been incredible.
Honestly, as someone who hadn't listened to Blink 182 outside of All The Small Things, Adam's Song genuinely made me a bit emotional but in a weird half nostalgia, half "damn being in high school really did suck ass" and it pleasantly surprised me. Banger album overall.
Man I requested this album like 4 years ago and you finally deciding to listen to it and actually enjoying it makes me really happy, even if I outgrew this type of music :)
The prices are a result of Ticketmaster dynamic pricing, they didn't start at that price, they went up because of the demand, similar to what happened with Bruce Springsteen earlier this year
I'd like to hear you listen to Dude Ranch and hear the difference in this band between Travis and Scott Raynor who was the drummer before Enema of the State. To me its two different bands. Way more of a skate punk feel than the pop punk they became
You've been complimenting the production and mixing. Credit goes to Jerry Finn, their long-time producer from this album to their self-titled. The man knew pop-punk and how to handle it in an impactful way which is what makes the Jerry Finn trilogy of albums so good. He was also credited as the unofficial 4th member because he was a close friend and mediator within the band. You can feel his absence on every album after their self-titled, even when the band manages to make some legitimately great songs on both Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs (EP) before the Matt Skiba era.
I didn’t expect brad to like this album, blink was my shit in middle school, I listened to them all the time. I’ll definitely be revisiting their music when I finish this video
Glad you liked this one Brad. You should listen to their Self-Titled album some time, it’s their best record and a stone-cold emo classic. Very different than their other material.
@@BobbysArchive Yeah there’s a lot of people like that. I feel like it stands head and shoulders above their other material. Maximum emotional impact, broader range of timbres, great song writing and no boner jokes. And the drumming!
The reason for the cost of tickets is due to Ticketmaster having a monopoly on the concert industry when it comes to ticket sales. And when people buy them and sell the tickets, people tend to inflate the prices even more for a quick buck
Adams song was about the bass player coming home from tour and having no one or anything to come home to and just having to spend his days alone until the next tour
Really random thing to point out but loved the fact you complimented the "Dark and Scary, Ordinary" breakdown portion of Alien's Exist, always one of my favorite moments on the album
Glad you’re enjoying this one Brad, definitely think that the two albums that follow this are just as good if not better. Self titled is definitely their magnum opus, and TOYPAJ is like a really refined version of this album. recent sub, love the content!
Oh the Adam song. That really takes me back to my early teen years. Hanging out with my friends who skates all day and I am just having a good time just hanging out with them, even though I can't skate for shit. Adam song is one of the songs that we bonded over and we play it a LOT almost everyday.
I weirdly feel the same when I listen to this. For context, I grew up on pop punk, but since adulthood, I've listened to pretty much nothing but elitist avant garde music no one has heard of. I have come to find everything I listened to as a kid to be awful. It's all so bad that my disgust supersedes any potential nostalgia. But for some reason, I don't hate Blink 182. I really enjoy myself listening to this. It just has a weird charm to it that makes me so happy. And even sad at times. Adam's song for example. It seems you felt the same. Watching this live made me very happy. The embarrassing part is, I also feel this way about some of some of Blink's later, shit music. The albums California and Neighbourhoods. The former of which, I think Fantano gave a not good. And everything he said was right. But that album brings me to my knees. I cannot bring myself to hate it. It's literally AJR-tier arrested development, so cringe, but I love it and it makes me cry. Out of the hundreds of bands I listened to as a kid, the only other ones I've experienced this phenomenon with are Biffy Clyro (pre-Ellipsis) and Fightstar. I dont know if this information is of any value to anyone.
I wonder how he would react to a primus album. Although even I didn't really get them and thought they were too weird for me until repeat listens. Then they became one of my favorite bands
Respect to Legoshi but this is not the greatest punk album of all time. It is one of my old favorites but doesn’t really compare to 80s classics like Black Flag, Minor Threat, Descendants, Dead Kennedys etc, those bands and others truly defined the style and influenced thousands. Maybe for pop punk this album is more important, I don’t listen to as much of it, but for punk as a whole it’s not even close
I'm so glad you enjoyed this one I recommend their self titled album or some of Tom's other projects the best of which being boxcar racer or the first angels and airwaves album
I have a feeling he won’t fuck with self titled and any Ava projects because of the seriousness of those albums, considering his favorite aspect of this album is how fun it is
@@MusicJunkie37 I don’t even think he would like that album. He might like a few tracks but I doubt it would hit like Enema. The early stuff is probably too rough sounding for his taste and the later stuff too glossy.
The downfall of blink-182 I think came from the death of the producer they worked with for all of their top work. But putting that aside I’ve got tickets for next year in Belfast and looking forward to a fun night
I'm pretty sure Adam's song was written from the point of view from a suicide victim. Mark read about it in a paper and he wanted to make a song from that perspective. totally different feeling from the rest of the album but it's so great with context
Untitled is their best album and it has an amazing flow. It sounds very different from this one. It has way more variety in their sound. Even has freaking Robert Smith on it. And it's the one you need to listen to.
Let’s fucking go, I love the first half of this LP, it’s their best work ever in my opinion. The first three or four tracks blend together so seamlessly.
I honestly can't pick between this album or "Take off your pants and jacket" for their best album. I listened to the latter first and then went back to listen to this one. I think the problem is I believe their other album is better structured compared to this. After my third listen of this album all the songs finally clicked with me.
10/10 album honestly. A classic of the 2000s and a defining album of the next few years after. Also, noticing you commenting about it sounding a little basic, and I agree if you’re listening from the perspective of 2023, with 20+ years of blink-influenced pop-punk, but at the time this came out, it must’ve set the world on fire! Wish I was old enough to have been a fan at the time! Cool to see em selling out basketball arenas and sounding better than ever with the classic lineup again
Heyy great video Brad, I enjoyed it :') If you're looking for another blink album you might want to check out, please try "Take of Your Pants and Jacket" which is my personal favorite out of their discography. Either way, I'm glad you're checking out their music
Massive reason why their old stuff is amazing and nine and California is trash was because of the producers, enema of the state and the two albums after were produced with the highly talented late Jerry Finn, but due to jerrys death nine and California were produced with John Feldmann who completely ruined the blink sound and turned them into a generic boring pop band.
I'll be honest, my whole life, Blink 182 has only caused me to ask myself, "Why not just listen to Green Day instead?" You may not even like Green Day but seriously, thier run from 94-04 was pretty great and compared to Blink and Sum 41 it's just better.
For me, it's different. blink's 97-03 is only challenged by that specific Green Day albums run, but as blink is not that pretentious with their music, they're my go-to with no brainer. Much more enjoyable.
Some dudes have a plan for what they’re gonna do in an active shooter situation, brad has a fucking plan for what to do if he gets caught on “to catch a predator”
EDGING is the first song for 2 albums that has Tom back in it. And I am SO happy he’s back. Just listen to his delivery in that first verse. It’s banging!
I really like blink, im not a crazy pop punk guy but old blink is great here and there. Never heard newer blink till this video, it sounds so bad they shouldve hung it up.
You know in The Wedding Singer when Adam Sandler blasted the father at a wedding he was performing at and the bride looks over at her dad? Her face was my face with the initial reaction to Hoppus.
Hey Brad I'm with you. everything I like is 10/10 so if i havent heard it before i assume its 0/10. it's not easy having impeccable taste in everything all the time
I'd prefer if he tried Chuck, Screaming Bloody Murder or Order in Decline instead. I am aware those are not pop-punk albums but they're far better Sum 41 albums tbh.
@@wahtdookie I don't think so, I think that's an album you could skip as it's not really a good representation of their overall sound the following years up until now.
@@wahtdookie I forgot to mention Does this look infected? I think that one is more essential and is technically classified as a pop punk album but with heavier elements for sure
This album is my favourite for sure. Not blink album, ANY album. Glad you liked it :D Another album I can recommend from a different band on the same vein is Unwritten Law's album Unwritten Law. Awesome shit. They go way back as friends of blink
