Steeplejacks were tough, smoked like chimneys, drank like fish, used asbestos as snuff, gargling bleach while having balls of stone it seems if this video is true.
I don't know, Fred seem ignorantly misogynistic he probably thinks there's only 2 genders and he flies the English flag, I didn't hear him praise the virtues of femmo-communism once.
yeah. I bet you'd have loads of laughs. Talking about steam engines and ladders. Wow. Really good times...I wager he'd bore the arse off most thinking people.
Definitely going to get students I have into Fred lol. There is a ruddy great brick chimney from 1930s at hospital near school too. Is sitting there redundant surrounded by extensions to the main original building.
This is exactly how he used to operate , swapping and bartering to get stuff he needed. Lots of people like him around in that sense at one time. Top bloke, sadly missed. Pity what's become of the house and yard.
@@damo8754 tried to open it as a folk museum but due to 3 wives and 5 kids all wanting their slice of that pie, it never got off the ground due to legal wrangles. The stuff in the yard is just left there and the trees have started to reclaim it. The steam engine and one or two other bits were sold. It was always going to be a messy business because too many loose ends and too many folk coming out of the woodwork to lay claim. Tbh now,, the best thing to do would be sell the house as it is ( its for sale at mo) clear the yard, and maybe put a plaque up...as time goes on and memories fade its less likely to be some sort of Fred Dibnah shrine.
@@johnathanryan2117 thanks for letting me know, although that's pretty sad to hear. Maybe all that will be left is the odd signed bit of mortar where he had his dog smacked in the wall for his ladders.
@@johnathanryan2117 I looked at his house on Google earth, it looks ok from the front and there's a blue plaque on the wall. Unfortunately I couldn't zoom in enough to see what it said but I'm presuming (hoping) it's something to do with Fred. Is a shame how all the parasites come out of the woodwork when someone dies, a great man like Fred didn't deserve that.
@@bouncerbloke1 I'm terribly late but I looked it up after seeing your comment and the plaque is in honour of Fred. It says: "Home of the late Dr. Fred Dibnah M.B.E Steeplejack" then lists his honorary doctorates from Aberdeen and Birmingham Universities and lists his interests and what he was known for. Ends with "Revered Son of Bolton" and has a little steam engine underneath. Greetings from Uruguay
Fred was a Balsy British icon ,a pioneer ,a British legend 'he should be in history books etc,,he's that real pure British hero, our comic book hero,,, he's Blackpool rock ,,he's our old UK British Craftsman' a working artist,Fred Dibnah should of been Prime Minister, people like Fred Dibnah are special, they get things done, and do it ,and use the financial ,brains of intuition,
@@mommymilestones Apparently Fred was once bitten by one of the only poisonous snakes to be found on these shores. After several weeks in incubation and an extensive course of antibiotics, the snake survived.
Let's 'ave a little looouk ... the ball is no better than the existing chimney decoration. Better to leave the stone ball on the ground, as a doorway decoration, where it belonged!
You're right Bob, underneath. If the Elf (Health and Safety inspector) saw that he would have a fit. How Fred survived all those years of dodgy equipment from often great hieghts I don't know, but he did.
Fred was well-blessed with common sense. He knew his limits and was never constrained by regulations put in place to keep idiots alive and contributing to the gene pool.
Apparently not. There was no accident. It might be unsafe by the standards of- you've got to allow for idiots, but if you had some common sense then take care!
Real balls = totally irresponsible often working with 5/6 pints inside him. Just imagine having a family relying at home on you and you carry on like a 15/16 yo with no sense of responsibility. The historic amount of fatalities from workers like him are the reason no one can do those jobs in same way these days.
