Master Fred Hersch gave hommage to Thelonious Monk who gave hommage to Bud Powell who gave hommage to Johann Sebastian Bach from whom Fred Hersch takes also inspiration. In walked Bud, chef d'œuvre.
GREAT!! Hersch makes a complete piano "sonata" of this Monk tune (based on the old song Blue Skies). Hersch makes the piece his own, but with great respect for Thelonious Monk.
Bill Evans told Marian McPartland that he admired solo pianists most but lacked the facilities to join them (debatable). I know what he meant. Not many can play the 4/4 walking bass part independent of the demands on the right hand. To his credit, Fred accomplishes it for a couple of choruses. But the master was the late Dave McKenna.
I heard Fred play the most amazing solo piano version of Caravan at a La Jolla, CA concert. Endless Stars is a favorite composition from his songbook. Amazing pianist.
so much great music here 5:41 provides a little fascinating resting place and also sets the stage for a short interesting different exposition also around 4;18 counterpoint pulses so much good stuff wow
Scott, I've just come across a classical piece of music that sounds like Fred could have written it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hiT_6VGXcDs.html The opening theme, reprised at the end, is just made for improvisation.
Un fantástico músico y persona muy amable que agradeció con este concierto el extraordinario trabajo de los profesionales de la medicina. Fué un placer colaborar con él con nuestro Steinway&Sons D 588028.
I've loved classical music all my long life--and jazz. Dave Brubeck was my first hero. I had a long appreciation of Bill Evans It was a long time 'till I heard another true original, Dave McKenna. Then, in walked Fred: mind boggling rhythmic invention and gorgeous lyricism. This one, The Song is You, Haunted Heart, the work with the Art Farmer Quartet, and all the rest of him--he's a genius.
With all due respect to this guy.. Flattening out monk w all his accents and syncopation surprises !! well why would you play this if you gonna miss everything that makes it interesting this is Like smooth jazz the opposite of what it should be.. why listen to this when I can listen to monk ..for me. only monk should can play monk cuz his style his geni us..is that U nique and quirky ..it ain't just the pretty notes..its something else again . Play this at home..not for public..u make a fool out of you self.. And make me naw she us at same time I don't like it when monk's music make me nauseous I like him too much so please lay off the shit.. it's not for you pal...stick w beatles if u cant bop the jazz
Because he's he's only playing a monk song. So that is Fred Hersch playing Fred Hersch using a monk song as a vehicle. Besides what's the big deal? So Fred Hersch is not your thing. Okay. I bet you wouldn't say the same thing about Benny Green when he plays Monk
