Yes! Please do! Barcelona was written for the Olympics held in Barcelona, Freddie knew he wouldn't be able to see it, but he put his heart zn3d soul into this, and singing with Montsy was one of the highliights of his career. She adored him, and said later she was asked to sing with others after Freddie died, but she said she could not; only Freddie. They were good friends. She came to his home in London, and they sang and talked and laughed until 6 a.m. and she had to perform that evening but didn't mind the all night hours spent with him
When you said “he don’t have no limits, like - can he be stopped?” it sent a chill down my spine. Because of course the only thing that could stop him in the end was illness and a painful death. Exceptionally sad. Beautiful reaction to this song, thank you.
Freddie wtote all the songs on this album (with collaborators). Monserrat was the most praised opera singer, soprano in the world at the time. The album is called Barcelona. Freddie wanted to do a song with her, she had so much fun she said let's do a whole album. So yes, Freddie wrote this opera and they recorded it. This was an outdoor theater that they used for this video.
She was considered one of the best soprano singers ever. I do not know enough about opera to really argue that one way or another. Yet when I hear her sing I believe it.
Astounding! Freddie was diagnosed with aids at this point and Caballe said in an interview that while they sang, she said she saw a tear run down Freddie's cheek. When they are holding hands at 3:13 of the actual video, you can see in his face and eyes that he knew that would be his last time performing like that.
I love it - "You just got here - your a rookie" and doing a smashing job!! Freddie's birthday is today (9/5) and I am sure he would throw his head back and laugh, grinning ear to ear hearing you call Monserat Caballe a female (version of) Freddie!!
I so enjoyed your reaction to this song. Montserrat Caballe (pronounced Ca- ba- yay) had the best voice in the world, Freddie thought. He was scared to meet her at first he was is such awe of her. But she was very down-to-earth and they got along great. She was present at the dedication to his monument in Montreux, along with his parents and the band and many others. Try reacting to La Japonaise from the Barcelona album...you will hear Freddie and Montserrat sing part of it in Japanese.
I'm saddened to read the heavy commentary about their singing not being live. Keep in mind their voices had to be 'live' at some point. Yes, this is a production for video play later. But you and I have seen/heard Freddie's live singing and 'in studio' performing enough to know his is consistently magnificent artistry. This is a fabulous production and how grateful are we to have it these 31 or 32 years later. BTW I say it is a mini-mini opera . . . Thanks so much for your 'real' reaction. EDIT: This was just seen on FB,...here's insight on the making of these collaboration videos of Freddie and Montserrat, it's only a few minutes...just click, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nSDH_SVgrMY.html.
I agree. I wouldn't care if I never got to hear Freddie live in person. I would have been happy sitting in Wimbley or anywhere else with him alive listening to recordings of him singing. WHO cares if it's live or not?
Cuzz u found a freddy song ive never herd!! wow. Thanks, it doesn't suprise me he can sing opera, his voice was truly amazing and one of a kind. Beautiful way to start my day. Jojo my lil cuzz ur keeping it 100 stay up
They were friends and they have a whole album recorded ... one of my favs is "The Golden Boy" (because of the choir) ... Back in the days I attended to a concert by "Montsy" where she sang live without a mic .... THAT WAS AMAZING! I met her later in her wardrobe to get a signed poster and stuff and guess what: I never met such a lovely, nice, good-smelling, funny (very loud) laughing person in my life! Even I was young (like 25 or something) i directly felt in "love" with her! I can understand Freddie, I can!!! They became very close friends ... I can understand! Amazing woman!!! ♥
Freddie and Mrs Caballe achieved this for me too... I fell in love with opera with these two 🥰🥰🥰 THE VOICES AND THE LYRICS WRITTEN BY HIM ARE SIMPLY OUT OF THIS WORLD 🥰🥰 I LOVE QUEEN SONGS AND FOR ME THEY ARE THE BEST BAND EVER BUT THIS IS JUST THE MUSIC OF GOD 😍😍
Freddie never ceases to amaze me. The farther I go through his and Queen’s catalogue the more of a fan I become! You really need to listen to Exercises in Free Love. Yes that is Freddie singing the whole time and what convinced Montserrat to collaborate with him!
Freddie wrote the songs to the " Barcelona " album. It's great to see young people appreciate different genre especially opera. Great reaction. One of Freddie's goals made and dreams reality.
Beautiful song ,beautiful voices ,you should watch who wants to live forever official video ,brian playing organ singing first verse ,then Freddy takes over ,Brian guitar ,Roger on drums ,and orchestra ,the song is from the movie highlander ,but so beautiful ,thank you and stay safe from Liverpool UK x
It was an opera with a full Orchestra Freddie love the Opera and he showed that in some of his rock and roll records he also love the ballet and worked with the Royal Ballet Company Vici also demonstrated and some of his Rock videos such as I Want to Break Free Freddie is the greatest of all time and Montserrat Caballe a the greatest of all time together unbelievable they both are now singing in heaven
@ 2:50 marker-your face is priceless! Yes, that REALLY happened. Just like Tanya White said below...react to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe singing Barcelona if you haven't already. When he hits that note on the word "away" I think that might be one of the MOST beautiful notes EVER sang. If you haven't heard it already, you'll know what I'm talking about when you hear it. Great job! He wrote an entire album worth of songs at her request to record together. Freddie was (and will be until the end of time) LEGENDARY!
Yes. Indeed, sadly both of them have been stopped by Death. They were great friends, and each absolutely loved the other's voice. She had asked Freddie to come and sing Barcelona with her for the opening of the 1992 Olympics, and sadly, Freddie said he would already be gone by then. He was. She sang, and the video was played behind them on a screen. May God bless them both as they sing together in Heaven.
If you really are open minded enough to enjoy his opera music good for you! Check out Freddie Mercury’s Exercises in Free Love. It will blow you away! He loved opera and thought she had an amazing voice. He often went to the opera to hear her. But Freddie Mercury’s favorite singer of all time was Aretha Franklin who’s voice he found astonishing.
I loved your reaction when Montserrat started singing! And I totally understand your reaction... The first time that I heard her singing I asked my dad:"Dad why can't I sing like that" and I even said"i want to meet her! She's so cool! "
Yes darling This is in fact an Opera song and FYI Bohemian Rhapsody is also considered a Rock/ Opera! He is actually in the Opera hall of fame! You can actually find Queen music in 12 different genres.
"Barcelona" is a duet they performed for the Barcelona Olympics. They performed it months before the actual Olympics because Freddie believed he wouldn't be around then.
He pursued her. She was a super famous opera star. Freddie wrote operatic songs for the two of them, blending opera with his rock style. She totally fell for him & his they did a whole album together.music.
Can you react to Freddie Mercury and Monsteratte Caballé Barcelona please. Another great song from the Barcelona album is the golden boy it has some gospel in it ❤️❤️
For the album Barcelona Freddie wrote all the songs But two songs The Fallen Priest and The Golden Boy were written by Tim Rice. Freddie reached out to Tim Rice for him to write two songs to complete the album Freddie was unbelievably talented, Back then you had to have real talent to make it there was no auto tune like today
This song was written for the Olympics in Barcelona. He was so talented and studied opera and she loved his voice and was eager to sing with him. This is just beautiful. His voice and power was so amazing and she too has a beautiful voice.
Thanks so much for this! Yes -- Freddie wrote an entire opera for Montsy - as he came to call her - they were great friends and collaborators - unfortunately, he didn't last to do the "Barcelona" Olympic opening live - but it still was recorded -- and Montserrat passed just recently - if there IS a "heaven" they are singing there together!
By the way ? It was a huge hit. Barcelona was used as a theme song for the 1992 Olympics, but too late for Freddie. , who died in 1991. He confided in her about his AIDS diagnosis, which was kept private for a long time.
When Freddie wrote these songs for her, he demoed the songs in his studio by singing her arias to her. Montserrat said she was floored and fell in love with his voice right then.
Beautiful!!! Freddie also did an duet with MJ There must be more to live then this. Perhaps worth a look? Freddie was an amazing talent and so diverse. So much respect for him❤
There were two editions of the Barcelona album. The first version was made simply, with just piano, keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, a small string group, and the vocal chorus on The Golden Boy. John Deacon contributed the bass part on How Can I Go on. It was all recorded in studios, and never performed live. The "live" videos you see were all mimed, because Freddie was already sick, and didn't think he could trust his voice in a live performance. The pianist, Mike Moran, offered to score it for orchestra, but Freddie liked it just as it was. Strangely enough, Exercises In Free Love was not included in this first one. It was recorded in 1987 & released in '88. Then in 2012, a 25th-anniversary edition was made, with full orchestra scored by Stuart Morley & performed by the FILMharmonic Orchestra of Prague. All the studio vocals were preserved, and they got rid of the electronic stuff. Roger Taylor's son Rufus Tiger Taylor, replaced the drum program on The Golden Boy and How Can I Go On. They kept Deacon's bass on the latter and included Exercises In Free Love. I have both albums, and they are both quite wonderful.
Spread your wings. It was a song in the beginning. Freddie has duct tape on his gloves. John Deacon wrote the song. And it's behind Roger's house. It's a good song, old but good! Thanks for your reactions! Stay safe
Hey, LFR - glad you got to appreciate this- Freddie wrote this entire opera for his idol -- Montserrat -- and they became veyr close friends.. -I love in this one that Monsty - as he called her -- was lip-synching Freddie... :)
Please react to Freddie & Monserrat's Barcelona track. Freddie was most proud of his collaboration with Monserrat (Freddie called her Monsty) outside of Queen.
It's NOT actually live - I'm not sure why they promoted it this way, but there are a few different video productions of them performing the album Barcelona. I've read an interview in which Freddie states he didn't trust his voice 'live' at this point in his disease process. You'll notice there are no microphones to be seen anywhere - the technology in '88 would have demanded them. Both of these performers were world class and deserved this stage! This is one of their most beautiful songs! It haunts me. Thanks for another great reaction! Freddie and his friend Mike Moran wrote all the lyric (2 others added a little) & music for this album. I'm not sure if Montserrat collaborated but may have made changes at the time of recording.
It's not actually live. They unfortunately never did any performances live. Well, they were in front of an audience but they were lipsyncing. The reason for that is a bit unclear. I've heard two things. 1 is becsuse Freddie had issues with his voice because he was sick and didn't want to risk it. He stopped touring and singing live and stuff after he got his diagnosis. The other one is that they hadn't had time to prepare and rehearse. I think the voice problem is more likely since they should know the song by now. It's a fantastic song though. You have to check out Barcelona and The Golden Boy 👌🏼
@Bobbi Lee What is?? That they were lipsyncing?? That's not incorrect at all. Listen to the studio version. Sounds exactly the same and Freddie never sounded exactly the same when he sang live. They also have no microphones lol. All 3 avaliable the performances they did of Barcelona is also identical to the studio version btw.
@Bobbi Lee Sanna is correct. They were lip syncing to a studio recording. I read from one of his people that he was having throat nodule issues at the time and knew his voice would not hold out the entire performance, so he reluctantly decided they had to do it this way.
@Bobbi Lee Yes, they were there in person at the 2 performances. However, they were not singing it live. 1st clue: no microphones. 2nd clue: Freddie stops mouthing words a couple of times while the audio still has him singing. 3rd clue: Freddie's voice is layered in a couple of places. You can't do that singing live. Sorry if your "real connection" misled you to believe that.
@Bobbi Lee There's still no microphones in sight. They might have sung this live at one point but not in this video. Simple as that. This is the EXACT recording as the studio version.
I know this was 6 months ago, but PLEASE listen to the rest of the album. Barcelona, La Japonaise, and The Fallen Priest practically hit harder than anything that’s come out in the last CENTURY. You even get to hear Freddie sing in JAPANESE.
"How can I go on" I think refers to his illness. He had already been diagnosed a year or two earlier and was dealing with it. Watch them sing again "Barceloma"
Hate to say it but this whole performance was lip synced. At least that's what I was told. But it was amazing. Their duet Barcelona became the Olympic theme song when the Olympics were in Barcelona. Her last name is pronounced Ca-ba- yay. You trill the two ll's in Spanish. You were spot on with her first name. Love your enthusiasm and thirst for understanding. Keep on, keeping on. ✌️😃
Listen to "Bella figlia dell'amore - Sutherland, & Pavarotti & Jones & Nucci - (RIGOLETTO) - (sub Inglish) Before you do that, read the lyrics and story of the aria.
JoJo, I'm really enjoying, but please don't use the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and God the Father as explanation points in your commentary.. I know you don't mean to be disrespectful, but it is not sounding like He is deemed THE MOST HOLY ONE! when His name is used that way. Sometimes people don't even realize it, until the someone mentions it, and I'm sure that must be the case for you as it was for me at one time. Love to you, Brother.
