This is from the Mt. Fuji jazz fest - August, 1986... Also with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Sorry it cuts off at 10 minutes, but that's all RU-vid will allow. Also, this came off a VHS tape with some tracking problems but is still pretty watchable. You can see part 2 at • Freddie Hubbard & Joe ...

Freddie is ripping out the most unreal pocket of notes..........and the deepest cat Joe is in the background praying??? God Gawd how intense of a scene is that?? Man!! Thanks for posting this.... It blows me away everything I watch it.......

I was checking out Joe Henderson during Freddie's great solo, it looks like he was praising God too! Imagine being in the midst of that great moment of music-making!

Times never change - Freddie Hubbard tears it up just as much as he does on the album, he's far too underrated.

Freddie held it down through the 1970s, along with Herbie and Joe while Miles was on hiatus... This is still hauntingly beautiful, despite the video quality.

Before the lip problem Freddie Hubbard was quite simply the best trumpeter. He could be fiery and then tender, tuneful and chromatic. Notice the energy of the motific development phrasing

One of the best things any time Hubbard and Henderson shared scenarios is to watch the way they enjoyed each other’s playing

An outstanding composition, recording and implementation of all of the sounds, music and instruments, of a timeless classic in jazz. Freddie Hubbard is wonderful, Joe is awesome, Herbie provides that structure to and that style to the song. The drummer has artistic qualities and he keeps drumming without missing or losing his place in the song. A blend of music that is a treasure trove in contemporary times. Thanks for the post

Every ounce of this performance is beyond divine. But what really makes it special, is the audience. They hung on to every note and cheered them on with enthusiastic reverence .... treating them like the heroic megastars that they truly are.

thankyou lawd thankyou....i'll never run out of inspiration , looking and listening to this . i pray that i'm able to play with the truth of the memory of why this expression of jazz is so intense in the first place...... ohhh .......maiden voyage....and everything leading up to this moment from the top of mt fuji, all throughout the ghettos of oakland, new orleans , detroit ect. just wow...

What cool about this performance, is that everyone on stage (except for Joe Henderson) was on the original recording of Maiden Voyage w/Herbie.

I've watched this a hundred times... so fortunate to have seen all these guys through the 70's and on. All of them architypal monsters on their axes and composers that added much weight to the 'book'. I would like to think that if I was standing in front of Tony and Ron Carter... Herbie... I'd would have to burn through a couple choruses too... heh, heh... yeah, dream on, but such a great clip!

Thanks for posting this. I had the pleasure of being on stage in the wings at this historic moment. Fond memories of my interviews with Herbie, Joe and the mad man, Freddie Hubbard. He's a crazy Cat...in a complimentary sense. The Mt. Fuji Jazz series was a world class event filled with aaaawesome moments and performances like this one. What a great three day outing it was. Chilling in the shadows of Mt. Fuji and enjoying the beautiful surrounding lakes with food, drinks and Jazz. Thanks again!

Joe Henderson has inspired me so many times because he is very fluid....you know it's him and he trills, thrills and fills the space with his identifiable tone and personality. Freddie Hubbard v is for virtuoso...Modal music at its finest..ala Herbie...Tony Williams strategically places thunder and hits to move the music forward...while Mr. Ron Carter holds the rhythm and Bass is place...time is everything
@MovieVidKing
@MovieVidKing 12 лет назад
This a very timely production of live music that can't duplicated or imitated because of the "gel", spirituality and intense professionalism these artist demonstrated that day. If you could imagine Michelangelo painting the sis-teen chapel on his off day... Tony & Herbie are keeping it together for Freddie & Joe to perform...

Freddie's solo is a trip around the Sun with orbits around the inner planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth, And Mars. Joe's solo, however, is trip through the Asteroid Belt to the outer planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and then out to deep space. And Herbie's solo takes us completely out of the solar system toward interstellar space.

I have to admit that this was Herbie's best years though. After/During the 80's the stuff that was released did nothing for me except force me to start Break Dancing on command... His days with Miles and on Maiden Voyage were among my all time favorite Herbie years. He is still a phenomenal player however.
