ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Freddie Hubbard went through many stages in his career, featuring on albums by pioneering jazz artists such as guitarist Wes Montgomery, as well as on Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane’s sonic musical explorations, and not forgetting the organic sessions on the Italian label CTI. Recognised as one of the most open-minded trumpeters when it comes to experimenting with style (another example being Miles Davis, who is a whole universe in himself), and considered by some as one of the fathers of jazz fusion, the American composer is also a prolific musician.
Filmed at the Village Vanguard, one of New York’s temples of improvisation, this live recording highlights the diverse influences that contribute to modern jazz and how they naturally interweave with each other. An artist renowned for his intensity, Freddie Hubbard's performance begins with a contagious track. With Ron Carter on double bass, Lenny White on drums and cymbals and Cedar Walton on piano (the same jazzman who played with Hubbard on an album by Art Blakey), the quartet play in astounding harmony. Ron Carter's solos are incredibly groovy, and Lenny White's drum breaks attest to a production consisting of many layers. Interspersed with the brassy bursts of the Afro-American trumpeter, this recording is also punctuated by an evocation of Guernica, the masterful painting by Pablo Picasso and a token of the interaction between the different artistic mediums.

I was at that gig that week. Not sure if same night or not. Midsummer July or August. Hot as blazes in NYC that week. Freddie was sweating up a storm in those polo shirts. Thats why he cracked himself and everyone up when he quoted Santa Claus is coming to town during that second solo. Not for a few months bro 😂. Cant understand for the life of me how Ron stayed so cool in that Safari jacket. A real cool cat 😂for real

Is that Ron Carter on the bass? This has a real somber feel to it and then it picks up- quite beautiful! Great video and sound and good camerawork! And that’s the owner of the Village Vanguard!

the commentary seems unaware that FH is playing a flugelhorn, not a trumpet.

Maybe a Cornet! The tone on those are more full and less treble.
