Freddie Hubbard - Trumpet, Flugelhorn Kenny Garrett - Alto Saxophone, Flute Mark Templeton - Piano Ira Coleman - Double Bass Carl Allen - Drums guests: Woody Shaw & Dizzy Gillespie I'm glad YT excists, so we can enjoy these kinds of videos. Thanks for the upload.
So honored to have played this song with Freddie. I worked with him twice, and jammed with him once. He's the most UNBELIEVABLE trumpeter that I've ever seen or heard. He could HYPNOTIZE you so deeply, that you would forget to solo when he was finished. He had a BEAUTIFUL SOUL, indeed. 🙏🏼
Freddie Hubbard was THE overlord of jazz trumpet! But the most beautiful thing is that he remained a fan and a servant of the music, as evidenced by him bringing out to join him one of his foremost musical influences Dizzy Gillespie, and one of the most masterful cats to emerge from Freddie’s own influence - Woody Shaw.
It's interesting to hear him play Misty in 1985, after recording it on "Sweet Return" (Atlantic, 1983). He's in rare form and I can see why Kenny Garrett joined him. Their flugelhorn/flute duo is magnificent! Carl Allen is on happy drummer, rhythmic and smiling all the time!
Set list: 1. Thermo 0:01 2. Skydive 10:57 3. Misty 26:50 4. One of a kind 36:34 5. A ballad for Woody 52:52 6. I’ll remember April 1:03:27 7. Bernie’s tune 1:15:08
I haven't read all the comments -- which often contain full info about live performances -- but it WOULD be nice to discover the identities of the drummer, pianist and bassist don't u think? 🤔
Awesome concert. Freddie was a genius, Kenny Garrett a monster, Woody and Dizzy incomparable giants. Fantastic rhythm section. What more could one want?
Freddie’s first solo right at the top is so burning it’s ridiculous. Freddy’s all in And with a Clean double high C right near the end, you can tell he was happy with that one. It’s a great feeling. And you share it with him.
The greatest jazz trumpeter of all times. With probably the best line up he ever had. Today‘s festival bookers: get off your ass and book bands like this. Make jazz great again.
Greatest trumpet probably maybe top 5 all time but this is far from his greatest lineup these guys are really good but just look at the lineup that did the studio version of some of his hits Ron Carter , jack ,herbie Hancock, George benson cmon
Definitely in the discussion of Top 5, perhaps, but he is not the greatest of all time....there was this guy called Miles....you may have heard of him.....
Just curious who you think is out touring that can touch this peak Freddie? Branford’s 4tet? I can’t think of a single trumpeter…Payton? Pelt? Ambrose? Sean Jones? Terrance Blanchard? Wynton? Maybe it’s time for a Freddie tribute project?
85’ the year I first moved to NYC…. And this video reminds of just how much great playing was going on at that time on the New York jazz scene …. These gentlemen were part of it and you could go out any night of the week and hear music played at this level…. Besides the Vanguard there were a lot of places that had this type of real jazz going with bands led by masters like Freddie Hubbard…….virtually all of those real stars that came up through the ranks like Freddie ,Diz, Cedar Walton, Woody Shaw etc. etc.. are gone now and the scene has suffered …..most people don’t get what jazz really is …. this video is a great example …..no Bullshit ..,just inspired playing that hasn’t lost that element of swing and blues that elevates the best jazz performances…..
Inconmensurable Freddie!!
Saturday Morning cleaning as a youth in.our Home including baseboards and smell of pine oil While Parents Played Freddie Hubbard Frank Sinatra and Arthur Prysock Great Trumpet player and of Course Great Singers grest upload and with Kenny Garrett
Woody is the one who gets overlooked, especially during his lifetime. Freddie on the other hand does tend to get far more recognition. Thank God for both of them and for Dizzy, all great trumpet innovators.
You wrote this comment a year ago?! Haha lol. Welcome to the world of jazz! Nothing new about Kenny Garrett. His sound has changed the approach to alto playing since the 80's playing with Miles!
Well notice that nowadays and for the last 10 or 15 years he's been spending considerable time with the soprano. Maybe it's the sound he had in his head all this time.
Ya, it's just you. Newport, Savannah, Monterrey, Atlanta, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Detroit, San Jose, Portland, Reno, Rochester, to name a few. STFU and listen before you pop off, comrade Mao. No one cares about your politics.
Freddie Hubbard ALWAYS HAD MORE 'SWING' in his playing, than hearing that 'wyn-done' guy continually espouse it, as if it's a VIRTUE HE OWNED....nope. HERE IT IS! Jerk.
