Freddie was a long time fan of Opera and in particular, Montserrat, and dearly wanted to do a collaboration with her. It was arranged that they would meet. Freddie did a demo tape, Exercises in Free Love (which will absolutely blow your mind!). She loved it and asked Freddie how many songs they would put on a rock album and he replied 10. Montserrat announced, that is what we shall do too. So because of her schedule he had two weeks to write 10 songs, which he did with Mike Moran, and then they recorded the Barcelona album, of which this song is the title track. Freddie and Queen have done a couple of songs in other languages also. Teo Torriate (let us cling together) a song for their Japanese fans. And Las Palabras De Amor (the words of love) They are both incredibly beautiful songs. Queen and Freddie were the real deal. Freddie could have sung the phone book and made it sound wonderful.
@betseyclark2832

This was the very first fusion of rock and opera. Montserrat was a very famous international diva whose voice Freddie admired. They met, hit it off, and eventually made an album together, the music for which was written by Freddie in cooperation with Mike Moran. Freddie sings in Spanish in one song, Ensueno, and in another he sings in Japanese. One of their songs, The Golden Boy, is somewhat autographical, talking about a star who rises to fame but has a difficult relationship. Barcelona became the theme song for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Freddie did not live to see that.

The Golden Boy with her is very good as well. Also, How Can I Go On and Guide Me Home. Freddie had a solo album in addition to Barrcelona, Mr. Bad Guy. I Was Born To Love You is a great song from it. The remaining members of Queen also reworked it into a version that sounded more like a Queen song. Brian had two great solo albums, and a fantastic live album.

Maria de Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballé i Folch was a Spanish operatic soprano. She was born in Barcelona on the 12th of April 1933 to a family which was economically devistated by the Spanish Civil War. With the help of a wealthy family, she studied music at the Liceu Conservatory and graduated with a gold medal in 1954. She made her professional debut in Basel, Switzerland in 1956 as a last-minute replacement as Mimì in Puccini's La Bohème. Her international breakthrough came in 1965 when she replaced a pregnant Marylin Horne as the title character of a concert performance of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall for which she earned a 25-minute standing ovation. She went on to have a long and versatile career, appearing on stage in nearly 90 different roles and, besides her naitive Spanish and Catalan, sang in Italian, French, German and English. She was considered one of the few great opera divas of the 20th century and was noted for her strong technique, incredible breath control, beautiful vocal colours and exquisite pianissimi. Her admirers called her "la Superba". Montserrat continued giving recitals up until her death at 85 on the 6th of October 2018.

Freddie wrote a whole album for the two of them this is one of these,it's not part of a film this was the song for the 1992 Olympics which he never got too see,and yes Dr Brian May and Roger Taylor along with Freddie all had solo careers for a couple of years,they needed a break from each other to do their own thing,John Deacon never went down the solo route,there's around 15 Queen albums during Freddie lifetime as well as at least two after he died and maybe another four solo one's between the three
@ZENOBlAmusic

They never took long breaks away from each other. Freddie recorded Mr. Bad Guy at the same time as The Works. They just liked to keep busy, you will noticed that Queen has released a lot more album then most bands at the at time.

Me encanta cuando la peña alucina con que un artista anglohablante suelte dos frases en español en una canción. Montserrat se tiró toda su carrera cantando en italiano, francés o alemán, o incluso inglés, como en esta misma canción...

Queen never broke up. They took some breaks when Roger and Brian did solo projects before Freddie did, unlike what the Bohemian Rhapsody movie would have you believe. Freddie did Mr Bad Guy to very underwhelming reviews (although I actually like some of the songs), but they never fully broke up. They knew they were better as a whole unit. You should hear Exercises in Free Love. You won’t believe it is Freddie, he did it as a demo for Montserrat and it led to them doing the Barcelona album together. It is a brilliant album, I listen to it regularly. Please keep your reactions coming, but look out! You’re becoming a bona fide fan

Brian & Roger still perform together occasionally and helped with the movie production. I believe they last performed with Adam Lambert. Brian did a beautiful duet with a hologram of Freddie. This song always gives me chills. This entire album is outstanding and received rave reviews. This was the first Rock singer/Opera singer collaboration on this grand of a scale and Freddie stressed over it believing that he was not good enough and that he would not be accepted, Montserrat told him that he would do great. They became wonderful friends and she was one of the first people he confided in that he had terminal AIDS.

His solo work includes: I Was Born to Love You, Living on my Own, Made in Heaven, The Great Pretender, and several other very good songs. The Queen fans at the time just wanted to here more anthem and Queen type songs, but his albums are more appreciated now, as I think todays fans love the variety of his talent. Roger played in several TIME, and IN MY DEFENSE are 2 very good songs he did for the Dave Clark production TIME, That was just released by Dave Clark after searching for the original recording for years, and he had Mike Moran re do the piano track. There is also a RU-vid copy of Freddie and Michael Jackson singing, That came to an end over a llama in the room while they were working on 3 songs. Roger had his own band called the Cross and put out 2 LP's where he sings and plays guitar in the early 80's. Each of them had other businesses and worked with other artists, and John Deacon opened a recording studio

Queen toured Japan a lot and Freddie wrote at least one song in Japanese, maybe more. For solo Freddie I would recommend "Living on My Own".. do the original versions...some versions that changed more into disco,, but I like the original. Also try Exercises in Free Love by Freddie...He sings it..as a demo for Monserrat...and he sang her parts.. then they did the song together called Ensueno.. which is in Spanish, but the translation is a beautiful message-- It's nice to do both of them but I would start with Exercises in Free Love which is Freddie only!.. Thanks for your Queen reactions

If you can find some of the videos talking about their first meeting its really neat! This was like a dream come true for Freddie! Prior to Live Aid Queen had gone their own way for a spell. With Live Aid they reunited and stayed together until Freddie passed. In recent years Queen, with Brian May and Roger Taylor started touring again with Adam Lambert. Bohemian Rhapsody is broken in sections, with the "Scaramouche" section being called the "opera" section. Freddy being in love with opera is no surprise at all. Montserrat and Freddy were great friends. Another surprising friendship between pop/rock and opera was between Sting (of the Police) and Luciano Pavarotti. When Pavarotti asked Sting to perform Panis Angelicus with him at the first Pavarotti and Friends concert, they formed a friendship that lasted the rest of Pavarotti's life. Sting spoke at Pavarotti's memorial service. But that performance was remarkable -- just Pavarotti, Sting and a guitar. And Sting has probably never been more scared on a stage in his entire life. And it made him a better musician. I'm sure Montserrat did that for Freddy without even trying. But check out the Sting/Pavarotti Panis Angelicus live sometime to see a superstar look scared sometime. But he pulled it off.
