I ripped apart and inspected my free big block chev. I took this engine as partial payment from the same guy the 66' galaxie came from. Its been sitting in the garage for a couple months and I finally decided to tear in down and see if I could find the cause of the dreaded "death knock." This 454 turned out to be the nicest "scrap" engine I've ever been inside. The lack of sludge and rust was beyond belief.

I own 4 snap on ratchets and set of sockets. Brand new never used em yet. Probly never will. Also own many sets of Carlyle gearwrench Icon and i use a large case of channellock for my normal wrenching now. I learned to not get all caught up in expensive tools because they end up getting dirty. Thats why now i like using cheap tools that i don't care less if they get dirty. I will use my nice tools for clean engine assembly though. Honesty its hard to beat them Pittsburgh from harbor frieght. Cheap enough not to give a s-it about, but actually are very durable sockets and wrenches etc. And if they do break... i got about 5 harbor frieght stores within 15 minutes from me to return no questions asked. Cool video. I just bought and pulled a 454 from U-pull R parts. $278! Tore down to find out its like brand new inside with super clean .030 pistons cam, rod, main bearings. Crank been turned. Heads and valves absolutely clean!!! Stock timing chain trash though. Crank been polished. So im doing a rebuild with new bearings and rings anyway. Thoroughly clean the block etc. Performance build with XE284 and PRW roller rockers. RPM air gap. Springs etc. For hot street engine. My engine the 5151 casting. Early mid 70"s. Complete balanced reciprocating assembly. Cant beat that for $278!😊

Cool tear down. Funny, I purchased the same motor just recently, somewhat redone, and have since rebuilt it to my liking, I just wish it was found cheaper, I paid $2,000. My block is a 959 casting also poured in '78, it is now .030 over. It had the 236 peanut port heads, I ditched them for a set of 820's for $100, worked for another $100, I just wish they were lighter for the suspension's sake, though I got big block springs, '71 Chevelle. Pistons are Speed Pro H426CP's. Cam is a Howards 122121-10. Intake is a 7561 edelbrock RPM Air Gap. Carb is an Edelbrock 1411. I am running a 200-4R and a 8.5 - 3.73 - 10 bolt. It sounds great and I sure do like it. Cool just to watch every step and learn for future events. The car had a .060 350 in the which I'd like to stroke some day just to play around with some, maybe put it in something else.

Oval Port Castings ending in #781 or #049 are the good ones.

Great video, I really enjoyed watching! Make sure all the main caps, especially the #2 that has the bad bearing, snap into their registers snuggly. The block’s mains can be line honed/bored to bring the mains back into spec. With some short dome (1/8”) cast pistons you’ll get close to 9:1 with those heads and make tons of torque! You can grab a used crank from a 366, 396, 402 or 427 which are all 3.75” stroke. That would give you a 427 :)

the 781 heads are the best flowing factory cast iron large oval port heads chevy ever made ive seen them make 600-650hp with the put in the bigger valves 2.190 intake and 1.880 exhaust. Im making 600hp on my 496 stroker with 781 heads

That’s awesome to know, thanks. Never really done anything with a big block. Excited to try building one. Any other tricks, hints, or info would be awesome

781s are one of the best heads for that era. Heavy but great for street engines. They are oval port heads.

The man who taught me how to rebuild my first engine told me it was to prevent sagging. Not sure if that’s a real problem, but I have always figured better safe than sorry

I have always heard to store cranks, heads, cams ect on their ends. The machine shop does it this way so I do too.

When all things are equal a 327 does not make more power than a 350. That's an old wives tale. What did you end up doing with this 454?
@excelerater

Nice that it was free......Nothing other than the block I would reuse ..454 makes much more power than a 427.... good luck

Maybe the engine had been rebuilt at some point.

Judging from what I saw and the third hand story on it I’m pretty sure it was a father/son build sometime in the late 90’s

Damn that's a score there .didn't see rotators ,have the shop check springs you may be able to reuse them choose non emissions cam based on headers or manifolds auto or manual External balance there so make sure flex plate is right for what ya do. Don't put a 427 crank in it

If the rest of the engine is good you can pick up used stock rods for next to nothing and crank too the send to machine shop .Not that expensive . It is definitely worth rebuilding .

My local machine shop that we deal with through work may have a reground crank. I have also been watching for good used parts local to me. As soon as we free up space in the shop the plan is to use the bare block for mock up in the 1949 chev. After we finish mocking things up I’ll get going on the rebuild.

74.4 lbs WITHOUT about 4 pounds of rockers. And I would be more worried about a cam or crank falling over that bending while it's just sitting still.

It is in your mind when all things are equal the 454 makes more power as does the 350 , but 327 could sound cool I guess 427 also
