I think it’s a real shame to junk a car, especially an extremely rare Austin Healy, as it’s history and numbers and identification are forever lost. Were the money available, a heritage bodyshell could have given the car a new lease of life, preserving its story and history for years to come. Failing that, new sills, floorpans, etc are easily available from the MG Owners club and many other suppliers.

Since you asked, here is my humble opinion. You guys have a great chemistry together. I love these junkyard rescue vids. Something going from total loss to driving again. It would be nice to see a total restoration. A bit of welding and few new parts this car could be saved. I know that this involves extensive work and funds. It would be totally worth it seeing it drive again.

Where I live, the provincial government auto insurance is making it more difficult to get older cars on the road even if body sections were fixed by welding in new panels. They do not want to see any repairs on rocker panels. This takes a lot of older cars off the road.

Some 30 years ago, I restored a Frogeye Sprite that was not as far-gone as this one. They were cute cars, but the cost in both time and money usually cannot compensate the fact that they were very badly designed and made. Best thing to do with most cars like this is to do what's being done here. Clean up as far as you can to try to make what's left last a bit longer, but getting them to roadworthy condition is very likely to cost far too much - more than they are worth.

You asked about the engine: If it's early enough, it might be a 948. Or a 1098cc. Doubt it's a 1275 (these were later Sprites and MG Midgets--after 1966 or so). Engine bay looks original and complete! Whoever gets this car will have some nice parts. Or the British Motor Heritage makes body panels for these little British cars. Great video and good luck to whoever gets this diamond in the rough!

I've seen much worse brought back to life! Parts are readily available and it looks like a lot of the scarcer trim parts are still there. I've been rebuilding an earlier Sprite on my channel... it wasn't as rusty as this one though. The engine should be a 1098cc 'A' series engine which has surprising source of both standard and performance bits available.

its either a 1256cc or 956 cc engine, normally aspirated (carburettors) two valves per cylinder with 4 cylinders, mated to a 4 speed synchromesh gearbox. You'll find that most sections are rotted away, as these have so many box sections and mud traps that there isn't a single example left that hasn't had some welding. Good news is that you can get Heritage pattern parts from the UK.. As far gone as it is, there are plenty of examples that have come back further from the dead.
@scienceistruth1924

I think it might be either the 958cc as you say or the 1098cc which was fitted to the MK 3 and my mk3 didn't have synchro on first but as you say there are loads of cheap repair sections that can be found they are great fun cars

That is actually a very rare model, it is a MK2 just after the frogeye sprite mk1 but before it had wind up windows in the mk3, I think it was built from 1961 to 1964 or there abouts, it is also retains most of the original parts including the rare 2 spoke steering wheel even the original twin SU air filter, it is definitely worth saving.

Personally, I love the "clean it up and get it running" vids. I'm into British cars so this one is especially fun! The engine in you car is an Austin "A" series 948cc 4 cylinder with dual SU carburators mated to a 4 speed transmission. That generation Sprite shared underpinnings with the MG midget, hence the resemblence to the Midget.

The MG Midget and Austin-Healey Sprite's were badge engineered but apart from the badges and the front grille they were identical. In my opinion the Sprite grille made it a prettier car. This is a Mark 2 with a twin carb 948cc engine that developed a massive 50bhp when new.

I think you guys can restore this Austin Healy Spirit. My brother Karl had one in the 1960s. He had just graduated high school. He and another graduate were celebrating graduation & wrecked on a turn. He was pinned under the Sprite while the friend was thrown clear with few injuries. My brother suffered a head injury, hip & ankle injuries & was hospitalized for months with lifelong complications requiring many surgeries. My family was devastated. He eventually married & lived a comfortable life in Maryland. I have very fond & loving memories of my brother and of the Austin Healy also. He was so proud of it. It was red

It would be a crime to part this car. It's mostly complete. Yes, there are obvious issues with floor pans and the unibody, but I've seen a lot worse. The people who want this type of car are enthusiasts who know full well that they will never recoup the money they spend restoring the car. It's not about that. It's all about having a project; the fun of working on it; learning new skills; learning about the car; and sharing the experience with a child or friends.

Sprites seem to be giveaway cars to me…as a kid one of my mom’s friends told my dad he could have her ‘59 bug-eye sprite for a year if he would fix it to get it to run. He thought it would be a fun car and not too hard to fix. He wound up having it for 2 years, it became a money pit and she wouldn’t come over to pick it up and take it back. He eventually had it towed or drove to her house and left it in her driveway.

948 cc (0.9 L) A-Series I4 43HP engine ,A car was tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1958. It had a top speed of 82.9 mph (133.4 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 20.5 seconds. BMC ( British motor corporation ) engine used in lots of their cars including the Morris Minor . Other parts like the steering rack and suspension came from other models in their range of cars . If i had the money and skills i would restore it and if i only had the money i would get someone else to do it. Oh yes , it's also known as the frog eyed sprite

I have a Sprite a couple years newer than this. Whether or not to restore really depends on the under-carriage. It's a unibody and it appears there could be terrible corrosion to axles, brakes, tranny, suspension, etc......All the wiring will need to be replaced. Parts are available and not too expensive, but it may need too much.

Actually guys, that car is definitely still restorable. It also appears complete…save the floors and the trunk floor. The identification plate may also still be on the car. As I recall it is under the hood somewhere. If you can find it, a lost title can be had with a bill of sale. If it is not to be found. The engine itself has markings on it and can be traced back to its original vin number. I’m sure the Austin Healey Club could help with that. Y’all are too far away from me here in Tennessee to get the car…but I would if I could. I would restore it…and drive it. (If it were mine…) They are a lot of fun to drive. You guys have the choice to make. Are you going to stick with just detailing old cars you find? Or are you going to add getting them running too? I will give you the heads up that restoration projects can get expensive and take a lot of time to get done right. So think about it seriously. I personally like the detailing work y’all do and watch because of it. Y’all do a really good job. Just my two cents…😏😎

Nice little sports car to save - first time I ever approached 100mph was in one of these, as a kid with my Uncle driving! Not sure I would ever get under it on just a jack though! This is a MK2 Sprite, so the motor is either a 948 or 1,098 cc A-Series (1,098 from late 1962), with twin SU HS2 carbs, outputting 45-55 HP ( at least in UK trim).

These old car vids are ok but it would be nice to see a more modern car transformation. The vids with the customer reactions are the best. THERE'S LOTS OF OLDER PEOPLE AND SINGLE MOMS THAT DON'T HAVE THE TIME AND MONEY TO GET A CAR DONE. That's the vids that make a difference.

The car is an Austin Healey Sprite MK2, these have the chassis number HAN6 (948cc) or HAN7 (1098cc), they were first made in late 1961 and are basically the earlier frogeye (bugeye) sprite with different outer panels. The early MK2's had wheels with holes around the outside, the wheels on this one are later so if original I would suspect its a 1098, the engine number would be 10CC or 10CG if its a 1098. The 1098 also had front disc brakes whereas the 948cc has drums. Of course over the years people changed bits to upgrade their car so its always a bit hit and miss to determine an exact year from pictures or a video.

Please stop. British cars have no business coming back to life. I know the idea sounds romantic (mostly just stupid) but these things WANT to return back to the Earth... ...let them.

The Volvo appears to be about a 1964 Volvo PV544, Possibly a sport model B18. the only way to know is the engine and the trim package. The Mercedes-Benz is a 1975 year Model 300 D Based on the US spec rubber bumper caps, on the ends of the front bumper and on either side of the grille on the bumper, the next year the headlight style changes immensely.

Parts car? Depends on who you ask. MGB’s, Sprites, and Midgets are like Mustangs and ‘57 Chevies - you can practically build them from a catalog. Most anything that car needs to be put back on the road is available from any number of suppliers. Just depends on how deep your pockets are and how badly you want to save it. The engine is a BMC A-Series. It’s the same engine that powered the original Mini all the way into the 2000s. It was in production for almost 60 years.

Interesting proposition. The Austin Healey is identical to an MG Midget, so parts are easy and cheap. Sitting on dirt, the big worry is the state of the frame. My first car was almost a 67 Austin A60 Cambridge, but after only a few years in dirt the frame was half in the ground. As for the Volvo, that is a beautiful P544, and another with all the parts available to make it run like a champ. They are getting pricey, too. Floor pans for Spridgets are easy and cheap to source. Even the frame is not difficult to repair. Check out Watch JR Go. On his channel he and a friend restored a twin to this car. Put dish detergent in the water for the sanding. It helps. The engine is a big standard Austin A Series 4 cylinder. Same engine as Mini, but with different tuning. Single side draught SU carburetor unless the performance upgrade to dual carbs has been done. The dash mounted rear view is because the windscreen header is so low the mirror round obstruct vision were it anywhere else. Chrysler mounted rear view mirrors that way too For the 7 Series Volvo, I'm surprised the steel lines are rotted. My 90 has 33 Ontario winters and nearly 400,000 miles and the lines are still good. Never use that much rubber line. Asking for trouble.

I had a '69 in the UK back in 91. 1275cc 4-cyl twin Webber carbs - a Mini Cooper-ish type engine really. I think this is doable as a track car if you add a roll gage and button-up the panels (which are pretty cheap). The engine is easy and cheap to restore. It's an MG Midget basically - in fact in 69 they were badged both Healey and MG. That mirror is not stock. They rusted badly but the panels can be replaced - you can even get GRP full front-ends for them. Makes me sad that something like this rots away for the want of a tub of grease and a $10 tarp. I get it, but there are not loads of these left. Wish I still had mine - worth a lot more then they were. I'm a long way away but I'd get her running again if I was close.

I don't think you mentioned the year of the car, but because it looks like pack-away top instead of a fold-down top i'm guessing this car is Mark II pre 1964. My guess is that it's a 948cc engine with twin 1-1/4 inch SU carburetors. Back in the day, this was a pretty sought after engine in the racing community. I think I'd spend my efforts on bringing the drivetrain back to life. Of course this is all based on my memory so please forgive me if I am completely wrong.

engine is an A series (Austin) BMC engine, 4 cylinder, OHV. This engine had various capacities from 800cc to around 1300cc. Fitted to many different BMC models.

I know a lot about Austin Healy Sprites and MG midgets. They are very fun cars. This car has almost no value unless it’s parted out and even then there are honestly not many usable parts. The engine is probably a 1275 CC with a four speed. Duel SU carbs with Lucas 25d4 distributor. Puts out about 50 hp on a good day. Top speed is around 70 mph downhill with a tail wind. The MG Midget and Austen Healy are identical I have a MG midget I am restoring and really need a parts car. I sent you an email

The Volvo is I believe PV544. Awesome classic. The Mercedes Benz is W115 but that one is build according to requierments for the US market. The European was way better looking. The Austin is one awesome litle British car. I wish I had one but even in Europe they are super hard to find. Even if you find one its usualy a pile of parts parked 50 years ago in some mouldy garage or overgrown backyard and the owner passed away and his family asking over 15 000 for it just because they watched some movie or show featuring such car. Thats like 9/10 times if...if you can even find one. This one in the video needs a restoration. It can be done but it cost lots of money here in Europe. But its one cute red car.

My first car was a 64 Sprite I bought in 69. It was a ton of fun. Until winter. I'd love to see this back on the road. A good body man using a welder and sheet metal could do the job. Lots of money could put it back in running order. As far as the engine, it was about 1100 cc and close to 60 HP. The side draft carbs sucked. In more ways than one. It was actually a good engine for the light weight of the car, mine topped out at 86 MPH. Not quick or fast, but plenty fast for such a small, light car with an 18 year old kid at the wheel.

That looks like the Mark II version of the Sprite, made from 1961 - 64. The 1961 engine is a 0.9 liter 47 horsepower. 62-64 models had a 1.1 liter 56 horsepower 4 cylinder. 61 had 4 wheel drum brakes, 62 and newer had front disc brakes.

Its an early MkII Healey Sprite so believe the engine should be a 1098cc Austin A series, 4 speed manual gearbox with no synchro on first gear. The parts (including new floors, sills etc) are readily available in the UK and not particularly expensive. Relatively simple cars to work on if somebody has the time.

Engine is 1275cc usually of this age….. similar to Mini Cooper but with separate gearbox….. very reliable unit……the great Sir Stirling moss drove one of these( modified) in a 12 hour race at Sebring if I’m not mistaken😎👍🏼
