Thank you Imran! I really enjoyed the DEC/IBM history, as I learned to program on a DEC 10 in '77. This was a fun video and a great watch if you need a refresher on OSI! The "top down" approach was new to me, ie instead of starting at the physical layer and going 1-7, Imran starts at the application layer most people are familiar with. Think this would be a great way to learn and will watch the whole series now :)

I thought more graphic examples should be given with the explanation. You mentioned many things, via causal interjection, that I couldn't understand. I'll watch again and see if it makes more sense.

well done, easy explanation, great slides, could i add this plz if u dont mind: Encapsulation and de-encapsulation ===>> The term "encapsulation" is used to describe a process of adding headers and trailers around some data by various protocols. At the receiving end, the protocol stack operates from the bottom to the top. Decapsulation is the process of reversing the encapsulation process. Example, data from the computer A has been sent through Internet to computer B. Application Layer is a layer which user works on, assume that we are sending Mail, the data is now sent to Presentation Layer. Presentation Layer converts the data to ANSII coded file which computer B can understand. Then the data sent to Session Layer and then to Transport Layer. Transport Layer cuts the data in to several pieces and add a Sequence Number to each piece in order to rearrange it properly by the receiving end. Then TCP header is added this encapsulated part is called Segment. Now the segment is sent to Network Layer. Network Layer adds the source IP address and destination IP address in order to route the packet through the internet. In this layer the encapsulated data is called Packet. Then packet is sent to Data Link Layer. Data Link Layer encapsulates the Packet with Source and Destination MAC Address and at the end FCS (Frame Check Sequence) for error checking is also added. This type of encapsulated data is called Frame. Now the frame is sent to Physical Layer. Physical Layer converts the frame into digital signal which can transmit through the Network Cable. Now the data has been sent through the Physical Medium.

I think I found a small mistake, you said that the socket is created at layer 4 (but as far as I know, layer 4 doesn't know anything about the IP), only TCP and port, am I right? By the way, you are awsome :) I am very interested to continue watching.

Hi .. I'm currently watching your CCNA lecture.. I'm not new to network but I'm not also a master of it. Watching this lecture helps me to understand and knows the network fundamentals not just knows how to do or say it but really understands how network flow/infrastructures are working. I'm also planning to take a training and hopefully able to take and make the exam. Currently I'm a System Administrator on my company and really wanted to add knowledge about networking since I know that System and Network administrators should know each jobs ;) thanks again!
