If you are unfamiliar with cutting to get pattern pieces, here is how to cut the hat and body (using the small gnome measurements): HAT 1. cut a piece of fleece which measures 11 inches wide and 7 inches high 2. fold it in half (left to right) and you have a piece of material that is 5.5 inches wide along the bottom and 7 inches high 3. cut that rectangle into a triangle (from the non-folded bottom right point to the top left point at the folded edge of the rectangle) 4. that material is now a triangle with the measurements as indicated in the tutorial and you can sew it from there. BODY 1. cut a piece of fleece which measures 9 inches wide by 7.5 inches high 2. fold in half (left to right) and you have a piece of material that 4.5 inches wide along the bottom and 7.5 inches high 3. that material is now ready to create the box bottom.

@karenpalmer9988
@karenpalmer9988 2 года назад
Could you use regular fleece or cotton woven fabric for the body and Hat? I don't have any felt right now, so I thought maybe using another fabric would work? I also had bought some wooden noses at Hobby Lobby with one side of the wood flat that I think would work for the noses, and I bought some Flesh color paint to paint them, and then maybe put a little blush on them to look like his nose is cold and red? Also would a pipe cleaner work for the wire in the hat instead of floral wire? I have some wire for jewelry, but its not very thick. Thank you for the great tutorial, and explanation of making these! They are adorable!
@SarahNenniDaher
@SarahNenniDaher 2 года назад
Hi, Karen. These are actually made with fleece, so that will work if you have it on hand. For cotton, you will need to hem the edges and possibly add interfacing (or tack to a fleece) so that you cannot see the weight and fill through the fabric. Those noses will definitely work and painting them (or watering down the paint so it's more like a stain) is a great idea. You can use pipe cleaner for the hat, yes, but I do recommend doubling up on them as they tend to lose their 'oomph' much sooner than wire. The jewelry wire - double or tripled up - would likely work, too, just make sure to attach it to the back seam. Thank you so much for your sweet compliment and for watching.

How do I get a triangle from a hat piece that is 5.5 in x 7 in ??
@SarahNenniDaher
@SarahNenniDaher 2 года назад
You would measure: - the height of the vertical side of the triangle (the FOLDED EDGE) at 7 inches - the base at 5.5 inches - to get the third length of the triangle (the hypotenuse), you join the two points by using a ruler; the measurement is irrelevant because you're just joining up the start of the base to the start of the height Hope that helps.

Yes, cut a 12 x10 body piece, which when folded on the 10 inch side, measures 6x10 inches.
@karenpalmer9988
@karenpalmer9988 2 года назад
Another question... are you marking the boxed bottom at the same 1 1/2" with the small body also? And I know you mention your seam allowance is the same as the width of your foot, but that doesn't help with knowing what the seam allowance is if you don't know what size your foot is? I'm just winging it, and hoping it comes out alright...
@SarahNenniDaher
@SarahNenniDaher 2 года назад
You can do the box seam at 1 or 1.5 inches - I prefer removing a 1/2 inch but the pattern covers it for 1.5. The foot is just a guide for beginners and most beginner sewists are likely using a standard foot. If you would like to use the measurement lines on your sewing machine, no less than 1/4 inch for the seam though if you're truly a beginner, I would advise 1/2 inch.

I responded to your two other comments, but here it is: Hat (both sizes measured and cut this way): Cut out a rectangle of fabric of 11 inches wide by 7 inches high. Fold that rectangle along the 7 inch side (so it stays 7 inches tall and becomes only 5.5 inches wide). Cut from the bottom, starting on the open side up to the top point on the fold side. This will be a triangle at 5.5 inches wide and 7 inches high. When you unfold it, it will be a triangle at 11 inches wide by 7 inches high. Body (both sizes measured the same way): Cut out a rectangle of 9 inches wide by 7.5 inches high.

I'm a little confused about the hat. If I cut a rectangle 5.5 x 7 with the 7 on the fold, what do I do? Do I keep it folded and cut a diagonal so when open the triangle is 11 x 7? Is the 11" side the brim of the hat?
@SarahNenniDaher

Yes, so you cut out a rectangle of 11 inches wide by 7 inches high. Fold it along the 7 inch side (so it stays 7 inches tall) and cut from the bottom open side to the top point for the hat. Are the sizes correct for the large hat? I followed as written. But the hat was too small to fit the body
@SarahNenniDaher
@SarahNenniDaher Год назад
Hmm, the sizes are correct. Just to check - you did fold the fabric and then cut 5 inches wide by 9.5 inches tall (meaning, the width is 10 inches wide). To troubleshoot beyond that, could it be that you pulled it farther down than I did or that you stuffed it fuller? The seam allowance could also be an issue? I've made a lot of these (many for just a single charity event) and those are the measurements I used every time. I've added length to them (the height of the triangle) to increase the scrunches in front but have never had an issue with them not fitting.

I love this tutorial, except I've spent entirely too much time trying to figure out how to cut out the material. After reading these comments, I think I have it figured out, but wow. So the square starts out being measured twice the width and then 7" tall (for the short gnome), then fold it over and start where your video begins. I hope that's right.

That’s correct. You measure the rectangle first, fold it, and then cut to the video.

Okay y’all, I feel like a moron. Everyone is understanding this but me lol! Do you start with the material already folded and then make the measurements? I was expecting a print out pattern to cut out and lay on top of the material. I’m super new to this. Thanks!

Sally, I'm hopefully going to get to make a pattern soon but yes. The measurement which says FOLD next to it goes along the fold of the fabric. So put the right-sides of the fabric together and use the measurements starting on the fold (height).

@@sallyartis3766 Oh no - I should have put together the pattern; I just lost an employee recently so I am trying to do things all on my own.

Sorry to be so dense on such a cute simple pattern, but my portion body to hat seems off. Large body is it ONE cut 6x10, THEN folded and sewn? Looks really skinny. the hat seems like it IS cut on the fold then cut diagonally for triangle, seems a little too bif but have not added nose yet. The viedo seems like the body is wider. Maybe need to fold other direction???

I think I finally got it! Sewed it the wrong way making a skinny cylinder. video makes them look larger than they re, can adjust. Thank you!

I'm having problems getting the hats to fit the gnome. Please look at measurements again. I don't believe I am over stuffing.

Having made a ton of these and having had hundreds send me their pictures, I’m pretty sure they’re correct. The hats aren’t pulled down too far, could that be it?

Just to say, these aren't Gnomes, they are GONKS! Gnomes have eyes and mouths whereas Gonks do not!
