It's not that confusing. He's an NPC (Non-playable character) an AI who is only meant to interact with actual players of the game. He fights back against a player and takes his glasses to see what they see. So the NPC becomes the player.

I think he’s an NPC (non player character) in the game and after he kills that bank robber he’s experiencing the game like the real players are. It’s actually kinda creepy when you think about AI becoming self aware and taking control, but I’m guessing they’re going for a lighter tone

Ryan Reynolds is an NPC that gains sentience and questions his "routine". He gets a player's glasses that let him see the game the way players do. I think Taika Waititi is the one who runs the company that made the game and Joe Keery looks like a tech guy who works for him. So exciting, I'm in 😎👍
