No one shows much free motion on a regular quilt, so much different on a regular quilt. Im struggling free motion on a big quilt, keeping it consistant. Thank you for all the tutorials you provide. I love you teaching abilities!

From what I've learned "stippling" is done in a tighter, compact pattern to hold a small area down. And "meandering" is done in a larger design to fill in an area where the density level isn't so tight.

Thank you for a revision video to remind us that stippling is a brilliant pattern to do as most of us have moved onto more complex FMQ & forget humble stippling can be used.

So glad to see this video! I forgot about your Free Motion series, Vanessa, and was about to purchase Leah Day's series that's for sale today at Craftsy. She is a really good teacher and I like her style, but I'm sticking with our fearless leader of the Crafty Gemini Quilt Club! ~Montana Lynn

Hello Vanessa! I want to Thank You for your Free Motion Quilting for beginners. I've been struggling to the point of feeling hopeless that I couldn't get this. I watched 6 of the videos and I'm practicing today. I was so happy with my results that I felt like crying. Mine is still aways to go to looking the way I'd like it, but it's better today than yesterday.

I like the way you made each of the patterns and I have to remember them when putting together the blocks I have which was my grandmother's and make the quilt very good and will last for many years for myself and others who may get it. Thanks as always for the instructions you have given us and I hope they help others as they have helped me.

What is the black material under what you're quilting? Also, do you think this would be possible on a Singer Simple?

Can you start quilting anywhere on the quilt? Can you start and stop as many times as you want/need? If you totally mess up can you rip out your quilting stitches without it messing up your quilt?

Thanks for a great series. I was wondering if I understood you when you said to slow the machine down in order to make longer stitches. Do you slow it down and move the fabric faster in order to get the longer stitches? :)
@TheCraftyGemini
@TheCraftyGemini 8 лет назад
+Candace Peterson If the speed is going pretty fast and you are getting really small stitches you can either 1) keep the speed as is and move the fabric faster to get bigger stitches.. or 2) slow the speed down and move the fabric at a calmer pace. It's really a balance you need to find depending on what is comfortable for you. Try it out a few different ways and you'll see what I mean. Practice, practice, practice~ Happy quilting!

I noticed that you switched the quilting foot in this video. Is that a juki brand or generic? Did it come with the machine or was it purchased separately?

I am having trouble choosing cottons for certain quilts I have made with lots of vibrant colours including black in it and it is mainly made up of squares, no one seems to talk about what cottons to use and especially colours and backing.....and so I have only been making my quilts by stitching in the ditch, with the colour on the top the same as the squares. Help please...
@29ladyinred
@29ladyinred 6 лет назад
I struggle with color, too. Everything I find is either too light, too dark, or has another color mixed in that clashes with the other fabrics that I've chosen. I think if you stick with 100% cottons you'll be fine. Don't mix cottons with other fabrics that have polyester (or other fibers) mixed in, because they'll shrink at different rates. When you're a beginner, you start with stitch in the ditch. It's the easiest form of quilting. You move on to free motion quilting (and stippling) once you've mastered other aspects of quilting.

+Jennifer Ruiz I bought mine here: amzn.to/24PLP1V I would recommend this one. It is nice and big and open so a lot of visibility and it doesn't bounce as high as some others which can be really distracting. Hope that helps.
