Good idea to use power that would otherwise be lost. Great.

I have watched your videos on how you made free hot water sooo many times. They are so well explained and helpful so THANK YOU!
 I saw that you have sold the van but would you do this solar dump setup again if you had another van? Also, you talked about making a third heating option with 230v. How would you do that? Where would you fit that heating element? Love from Sweden

Hey, sorry for the delay replying. Thank you for watching the videos, I’m so pleased that you like them! I have sadly parted with my van but I would definitely use a solar set up again for heating water. It’s a no brainer really. Free hot water! So for the 230v element I was looking at fitting another element as found in an electric towel rail. It’s long and skinny with built in thermostat. Might take some time to heat but it’s another option making it a 3 in 1. Hope this makes sense 😊

Thank you, glad you found it useful. I didn’t get a chance to test it out with additional solar panels and have now sold the van unfortunately. That’s not to say I won’t try it out on another build in the future though 😊

Great video there.I've something similar without the temperature switch. I use a victron voltage meter with hi/low voltage cut off going into a 30amp relay similar to yours.(now to be 40amp). Used with a diesel heater heat exchange radiator set up. How much wattage solar panels have you..? I've 330w panels and on clear sun it will almost keep above the low voltage cut off(13v) continuously.Might bring it to 440w if I thought it would keep it above 13.2v all the time.
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 Год назад
Nice, I didn’t realise that victron did one 👍🏼 currently I only have 1 x 100w panel but I will be adding another 200w panel when I find the funds etc. This should hopefully be enough to test it out and get it running properly. That’s great to hear yours is working well with 330w 😊

@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 Год назад
Thank you, glad you like it. Are you asking about the control circuit? The control circuit will draw very little current so I just used what I had leftover. 0.5mm will be sufficient as has a current rating of 11amps and it’s only energising a couple of relays and the controller.

Where and how did you fit the water sensor?
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 4 месяца назад
The temperature sensor is taped to the outside of the keg, under the insulation :)

Use half that heating element. I don't think you have enough battery to support two in parallel. I heat water right off the PV array and proportionately divert it to heat water efficiently, be it 5W or 500W. Operate in parallel with any charge controller. Why have a bigger battery just to heat water.
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 Год назад
That is a very good idea, never thought about going straight off the charge controller.
@opera5714
@opera5714 Год назад
@@TurnersWorkshop97 Right off the array is the most efficient way to heat water without using without using the charge controller, inverter and battery capacity. My method uses a specialized controller to maintain power point for maximum power transmission. With just direct connect, twice as many panels are needed to produce the same hot water. Every solar system has excess power and most times that is just wasted. This controller also is the only way to connect heater elements off solar panels with a MPPT charge controller connected. No one else discusses this method on YT. This should be in common use.

@@opera5714would you mind giving a brief description of your setup as this is what I would like to do, have a spare panel dedicated to just heating water every time it has sun, separate from the main battery bank. Thanks.

It’s that sensor located to the gearbox (MT75)? You could try and replace it, fairly easy. But around £45,- you can check the Haynes manual how to do that (I assume it’s described in there).

Hi I have followed your schematic and whn I make the system live after aprox 10 seconds the 2 Amp fuse blows? im still scratching my head? would you have any ideas?
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 3 месяца назад
Hi, I would check to make sure all the positives and negatives are in the right locations. If one gets crossed it will create a short circuit and blow the fuse.

Hello, I have have the time relay solar dumper like yours. I would like to know if you think this dumpsolaire can switch on and off a victron Phoenix Inverter because my hot water tank is one elgena with one 220V element.
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 Год назад
I would say it’s probably best not to have the element switching through the inverter as it might damage the inverter if it’s constantly switching on and off.
