Should we free prisoners after they've served 40% of their sentence?
Labour is planning to do just that to ease prison overcrowding in England and Wales.
The new justice secretary - Shabana Mahmood - is due to set out the plans today amid concerns jails could run out of space within weeks.
To run smoothly, the system needs around 1,400 free cells in men's prisons, but reports suggest only 700 spaces are currently available.
At the moment, most prisoners can be released after serving 50% of their sentence, but Labour will release some non-violent offenders even earlier to "pull the justice system back from the brink of total collapse",

83, 000 in prison ? And plenty more potential prisoners walking the streets. What a mess the is in. Is anything FIT FOR PURPOSE ?

The question to ask Michael is why, and how, is he drawing the line where he is suddenly drawing it, given that he believes in things being determined by whatever an individual thinks or feels them to be in other instances (namely gender and sex)? His lukewarm stance on prisons fitting as it is, still relies on a principle and standard that he has previously rejected.

I think that government should look at American jails.

Its because UK prisons are a luxury resort whilst law abiding citizens are on the streets. System is a joke, prison should be more like US

In Sweden they have less crime and bang up less people. Prison only creates more problems and provides no solutions. People who work in the service get paid very little for the abuse they get day to day. Prisoners go in wanting to change, but the system rewards bad behaviour and yet gives help to those who are violent as they are scared they will act up. The result is with little hope they offend again. Best spend money on true rehabilitation and getting them into work, giving them a purpose with a job and future. This only applies to offenders with short sentences and not serious crimes.

@@paganartisan ofcourse there will be less crime when you compare a country with a population of aprox. 11m vs 70m genius. Swedish people are actually nicer, UK has too many whacko people from around the world also.

Tories underfund the justice system and overfill the prisons without building much, if any, also privatising the probationary service so post-sentence rehabilitation back into society has fallen literally off a cliff. Tell me again how this is Labour's fault?
