Gossip has it they got greedvicted. Landlord wanted to triple their stabilized rent they told him they would rather leave and they weren't going to get a reasonable rent anywhere near Boston. Moving the foundation would have massively hurt employees, some of those listed live in for life rent stabilized apartments.

This is almost certainly true. Rent in Boston has gone up a ton just in the last few years (I live here for god sakes haha!). If I want to stay here, I’d be living with my parents for the remainder of my life, as it’s really that expensive to live on my own (I’d need to make 150-200k a year to even get by!!)

For those interested: rent prices havent dropped because the whole broker and landlord community got together and agreed to keep up the asking prices no matter what. The reason theyre doing this is to trick all the tennants who are looking to rent a place for the first time or renew a contract directly with the landlord/broker, while thinking they can save some money by not paying commission to a broker who would find places to rent. They can do this because the Comercial real estate "industry" is completely unregulated and they can basically do whatever slimy bullshit they want if it doesn't break general law.

@@SianaGearz At least part of it is if they reduce the rent price, then the value of the property is also reduced, which means any insane loans they have taken out based on the inflated property value have to be repaid. Even an empty property, so long as they keep the rent price inflated, appears to be more valuable than it really is. This should be illegal as clearly its lying about your properties value if nobody can afford that rent price.

you have a good point, if they really need to meet in person (instead of remote via videochat), they can reserve space at an wework, regus, airbnb, or even a hotel room if not a coffee shop.... seemingly any price would be cheaper than their rent. I guess as long as they have network connectivity there, what would it matter?

There's some really interesting videos out there on how people are avoiding price fixing laws. The basic idea is a lot of landlords are making use of these apps that suggest prices for regions, the app isn't setting the price but it is suggesting the same price therefore things are kind of going unpunished.

Wow, wish I had heard about this a few weeks ago when I was in Cambridge. One of the highlights of working and volunteering for the FSF used to be the occasional pilgrimages to meet up with the other staff and directors at the office.i feel like something has been lost even though I’m not very involved any more.

From just the information in the video it does seem like 2/3 if not more of the cost come directly from the rent and is probably going to be the biggest reason for dropping the office.

In regards to your latest chromebook video; wayland+pipewire is actually better/faster compared to x11+pulseaudio on old hardware that supports it. I use a netbook with a dual core silvermont (3rd gen+) celeron and 2gb of RAM and wayland+pipewire has proven to be more responsive on my potato compared to similar window managers (i3 vs sway/ labwc vs openbox). I've also found they use less ram over time.

It's always rent, so many companies in the U.S. tried blaming shop lifters, when they eventually were honest and said they closed down locations because the rent.

One of the local retailers where I live was a bit delusional for a while and he blamed online shops while his business slowly failed. After a month, he just said it out loud that the rent is so high it could be black tar heroin.

Hooks are indeed a very useful way to extend the functionality of a program by providing entry points during the various phases of its runtime, and I also do assume the FSF would benefit from their software having more hooks, hence hookers should indeed be considered an acceptable expense for the FSF moving forward.

It is a market failure. The normal mechanism for reducing prices (increasing supply) does not work when land is scarce and building multifamily and commercial is illegal in many urban areas (R1 zoning).

It is sad, unlike Gnome, the FSF used to be helpful and valuable to the community but they have gone downhill. It is mostly office rent driving this, but I think it is also lower funding due to my first sentence. If only one or two people were using the office regularly it is insane they kept it this long. Another sign of bad stewadship.

Not sure how much office rent went up, but the area shot up by 20 to 50% last 2 years around Boston. Is pretty crazy here. Can be too people working in the offfice had to move to cheap area too much far away, no point keeping a office. But i never been there may pay them a visit not sure.

This has been long due. About 25 years ago the offices of most foundations have become next to useless. In the FSF case that's probably 2.5M USD wasted over the years, if not more.

Maybe unpopular opinion but there is value with meeting in person that cannot yet be replicated with online communication (we'll see where VR is in 50 years) but I don't think you need to have a super expensive office space to make that happen

The FSF has been on my permanent shit-list since they let RMS back in. That said, duh, their donors are probably a few very wealthy elderly nerds, so they need to make every $ count, and an office in downtown Boston is the opposite of that.

@@Noname-67 Well, what is meaningful and meaningless can vary wildly, not just from a person to another, but also from a day to another. Going to the extreme, everything we do is meaningless. I'm not in that camp, though not far from it either. I'm not sure how reliving one's life is tied to our topic, but I would argue that writing and especially reading "First" comments is quite repetitive. And while I don't dislike repetition in every case, in this particular one I do. I do find it meaningless and a waste of everyone's time involved in it. If I had the chance to have these comments filtered out, I would probably be happier and it will surely save those engaging in this activity from my salty comments, though I rarely do them.
