Helen Mirren and Jason Momoa present Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, Evan Hayes and Shannon Dill with the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for "Free Solo" at the 91st Oscars in 2019.
alex honnold doesn't need more praise, he is the actual and only reason the film was made, everyone watching it or even just hearing about it will realize that. that's why she didn't mention him first. he is the one you see, the rest of the filmteam you probably won't
Lol. I am laughing so hard at the comments here. Yeah, I just watched this acceptance speech for the first time and it was awkward to say the least. Perhaps she should have prepared a little better and thought about the project.
@@brentwalker3300 I get it, its an Oscar for the Best Film not climber, but still..like Alex was the essence of the film and the life of it, literally his life was in this film and she doesnt even take the time to thank him properly, its like you win the oscar for best actor and the cameraman comes and talk beside you about how grateful he is damn
Honestly I don't think it would've mattered to him. Climbing El Cap was his accomplishment to himself. I mean the first thing he said when he got to the summit was "I'm delighted". That's true happiness with no outside acknowledgement needed.
@@trever2244 yea but its about being polite, common courtesy, being respectful to the man that made your documentary cus he did, its about honouring this legend if he wants it or not, but not only did they not do that, they also acted like selfish idiots.

WOWWW...at 2:56 Jimmy Chin reminded her to thank Alex by whispering "Alex" (read his lips). Then she proceeds to talk about Alex's girlfriend....Jimmy's face was clearly: "Yo wtf?" just then.
He repeats ALEX a second time after she forgets again. After Jimmy concludes by saying "Thank you" you see and hear her say, "I'm so sorry". What a train wreck of a speech.
Lol I will chose to believe that as well. He was probably visualizing his next impossible solo while she thanked literally everyone except the person she should've.
It just shows the complete disconnect from reality. She doesn't understand that the film won the oscar and is incredible not because of the actual film making that took place but WHAT THEY WERE FILMING. I have no doubt all the crew did an 11/10 job but that's not what makes this film special. What makes it special was the subject matter. This could have been filmed with a single gopro with 0 editing and it would still have a far greater chance of winning the oscar than anything else these people decided to make. It's really absurd how many people fail to understand the achievement is what makes this film what it is a million times more than any other aspect.
@@lolawhite7834 I felt disrespected on behalf of Alex... In this occasion, I can live with disrespecting the women of color or Alex's lady. They should have acknowledged him more on that Stage.
After watching the doc, I get the impression that he isn't the kind of guy to want to say anything. He made it very clear that he does what he does for himself and nothing more. He'd probably say, "thanks, I guess, for watching the thing that I would have done if no one was watching."
I watched the movie and have no idea who that is, but I have that entire climb burned into my memory. Def not a boring film without that lady. If Alex didn't climb the mountain it would have been a boring film
allex honnold is a freaking legend. look at how uncomfortable he is when praised. he deserves all the succes he gets and more. its a pleasure to see what he makes out of it.
I guess she was meaning by capturing Sonni's emotion it made it more real to us, but she probably didn't get the context of what she was trying to say during the short time given to do her acceptance speech. She probably cringes at it as much as we have. It certainly upset me though watching the scenes of Sonni going through the pain, knowing that one mistake and he wasn't coming home, and the film captures that emotion so well. I think seeing her go through hell does give the film a whole new dynamic rather than focusing solely on Alex who sees it as another day at the office and he doesn't show any emotional because he genuinely isn't afraid of his own mortality. An truly incredible film and thanks to them all for bringing it to our screens so we can all be a part of the history made. And Alex will always be the star of the show, he free climbed El Cap without an inch of rope!! Respect..
@@stephaniewhitworth9162 Bull shit. If she didn't want to cry she shouldn't have handed him her phone number from the start. This documentary has nothing to do with her.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA 😂 seriously, so much of the film was about how they made the documentary; I was like wtf? Climbing el cap was THE incredible feat and that should have been the focus! Not all of the dilemmas they were facing; I literally was not interested in that or Sanni at all. I found the focus of both those aspects so annoying; I kept wanting to skip those parts and go back to the actual climbing!
Chill, dude. They started playing the music to kick them off. They only get like two minutes to give a speech and if they went any longer they'd cut off the mic.
@@ffunyman It's weird to congratulate the side character of a film first, especially one that didn't have an importance in the film. It was obvious she was added in for filler content, to congratulate her first is bizarre to say the least.
There was no racism until she said the word "colour". It sounded strange. The movie was not about anti racism. It was a pure free solo and i didnt hear her speaking about free solo. "Okay , oh BTW such an awkward speech"
“Thank you Sanni !!! This film would be so BORING without you “. I was literally sweating bullets and almost had a heart attack watching Sanni scale that massive wall . Her boyfriend Alex was pretty cool too .
When I saw this in the cinema, the whole audience stood and clapped at the end credits. Not for Alex... but for the women of color who only make the films better.
She was SO gracious. After talking about what a great job that she, the women, and the persons of color did to make this such a success, I swear that I heard her even mention Alex in the end. Wow.
Did you notice that when her husband points out that she forgot to mention their son, James, that she just looks at him for a split second like, "Why the hell did you have to correct me?"
@fucookie oh wow she graciously said one sentence about him AFTER talking about women and minorities. It's clear she's got a huge ego and feels the need to talk about herself and random minorities rather than thanking the dude who actually made the climb
I get that this was their film, but WTF, Alex was the climber here. You start by thanking him. And you give him time to speak, and not stand there wondering what your kids names are. I will say this was likely the greatest achievement of any film crew, they literally hung from a 3000 foot wall over several years never knowing if their film will see the light of day. Once again Jason Mamoa shows how cool he is, he went straight to Alex to throw him a bear hug...he knew where the miracle of this film really was. He likely was thinking this little guy has got the biggest pair he's ever seen!
Late comment but Jason is part of the climbing community so of course he threw his arms around Alex. 😊 Jason grew up BFFs with Chris Sharma, and while Sharma is a much different climber than Alex, they’re all part of the same Gen of climbers.
I can’t but feel that Alex Honnold should receive the highest awards. He should be given a house, cars and everything. His contribution is second to none!
"this movie would have been so boring without you" what? this guy climbed a mountain without equipment and accomplished one of the greatest human feats in history. This would have been just as gripping without her ever being mentioned.
The point of the movie is about the relationships he has with the people around him and the strain his choices put on them. It's much more interesting when viewed as a study of a humans right to choose even when those choices risk hurting those around them, than just a dude climbing a mountain. If no one was scared he was going to die then it wouldn't be 1% as exciting because we the audience would have much less reason to care
@@DGTLCLANGAMING it's a bit more than just a dude climbing a mountain. It's a dude climbing one of the craziest rock faces on earth without equipment. Just knowing a little about the guy then watching his life be on a knifes edge for a several hour climb is gripping. The relationships add a bit to it but certainly would not make the movie boring without them.
@@DGTLCLANGAMING This didn't need to be a hollywood-esque film to be a great documentary. You can't tell me it is "just a dude climbing a mountain". The climbing content IS the purpose of the film, the relationship shit that was forced into the plot was only filler. Alex made it very clear that he cares about climbing way more than any relationship. People didn't watch it for the love story, they care about the climb. I would have rather seen more of the climb or training sequences instead of his girlfriend.
I genuinely tried to think of a speech as bad and the only one I can think of is Anthony Joshua after losing to usyk. And when I watched that I never thought I would see anything as bad, and I did
This speech is a disgrace. Alex performed the single greatest athletic achievement of all time and you thanked his girlfriend who got him injured, random women and minorities, and then called his climb boring? WTF?!?!? How do you only barely throw his name in at the end? Horrible. Horrible horrible horrible. This is the most obscenely rude thing I’ve ever seen.
It doubt they were expecting it. RBG got a lot more press time beforehand, not to mention the glaring omission of the Mr Rogers documentary. Basically this was the equivalent of putting your name in the hat for a poetry jam as a joke only to have your name called first. “Uhh...there’s a lot of people here...Uhh...”
Madan Jampani Does nobody in this comment section understand that this was an Oscar for best FILM MAKING not BEST FREE SOLO DUDE. They deserve to take some glory and shine here. It’s the OSCARS NOT THE ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Nathan Thompson 100% this. It’s an award purely based on film-making ability. Just like how these filmmakers aren’t getting climbing awards/records for filming him.
Imagine talking in front of all those people. Lol I think they handled it very well. Jimmy had a few opportunities to say his piece and she thanked the people she felt were important to this project. A little humor, emotion and finally a big shout out to the star Alex to cap it off. The film was great, have some respect.
@fucookie that's ALL she said cookie. Apparently she feels his gf deserves to be mentioned first, while the main guy is just an afterthought at the end of the speech.
You can tell at the end as they walk off she probably asked Jimmy "was that ok?" And Jimmy gives her that wave like "eh don't worry about it" we all know he was thinking "that was the worst speech I've ever witnessed in my life"
Without Alex risking his life in the pursuit of his own happiness these dummy’s have no Oscar. Kinda sad he wasn’t the first name out of her mouth. She got caught up in her own moment and didn’t realize that it wasn’t about her but about the fact of a super human feat was captured through the lenses.
i can't take it when she said "this film would be SO BORING without you (Alex's wife)", that really disgust me it's like hearing that you have no tense at all if there was only Alex and his journey?? his free solo is the greatest captured moment that really risk his life yet you call it boring? Alex is the one you should thank first not last... she mention his wife first just because of WOMAN, such a bad example of feminist

my idea for FREE SOLO 2 - Alex should film Elizabeth Chai VasarhelyI climbing el Cap while he films it and gets an Oscar for watching her fall from 3 feet off the ground to bruise her MASSIV EGO
This is how the acceptance speech should have beenv here..his daring Skill, Technique, Stamina, Focus, Concentration, Sacrifice, Determination, love for sport fetched us this. thanks Mr. Alex.
Sanni McCandless definitely made this move great! Elizabeth Chai please direct Free Solo 2 starring Sanni. I want to see how that turns out and what it's nominated for.
God this movie would have been SOOOO boring without his girlfriend bitching at him for not helping her with the measuring tape. Yeah nothing else exciting going on here.
Not to mention the fact that she let him fall while training!! And did nothing to help him achieve something that was obviously important to him. She came across as both selfish and needy and even tried to make him feel guilty with her "oh, what about me, Alex". If anything she made the whole thing even more difficult in my opinion.
Bruh she was in the movie for like a grand total of 10 mins and the when she went climbing with Alex that was one of the first time he had an accident in years lol

I'm in shock that they just won an Oscar and she says to the girlfriend, "This film would be so bring without you." HORRIBLE! Who the hell says that?! Actually, the girlfriend was the weakest part of the film. They focused way too much on her for no significant reason. She was not a particularly interesting individual. I can't believe the director just singled her out, and way more so than Alex! She should have thanked Alex first. I didn't think this was a great film. It was a great subject, but not a great documentary. They should have shown MUCH more of the actual climb. I don't know why they didn't.
All the girlfriend did was be a distraction, get Alex hurt, and whine about him trying to achieve his dream. He literally had to buy a house for her in another state just to get some breathing room so he could concentrate on his death-defying feat.
Hillarious how she thanked the girlfriend of the starring man before the actual man. Thanking Alex should have been the first words out of her mouth. She goes in to gender equality and people of color before thanking the person that actually made this possible. Without him there litterally wouldn't be a movie to make. Todays PC society.

I have to add my voice to the many others who thought that Alex Honnold should have been properly acknowledged. He was not. He deserved the most recognition. A god among mere mortals.
It is simply unacceptable that these fools didn't FIRST AND FOREMOST mention Alex before the silly things they mentioned. Rather appalling, the way I see it. I can understand if Alex didn't want to speak, but why would they not soon thank the singular most astonishing subject in a documentary in decades? Maybe they thought they had more time to speak, but wow...
When a thank you speech is done properly it can be very powerful thanking the most important person last, but sadly her speech was not well done. So it was more awkward than powerful.
She was nervous and tried to be funny. It's obvious to everyone who was the real hero and driving force of the movie (Honnold), no need to rub it in anymore
I just watched the documentary and the thing where he feels his mom is never happy for doing his best is repeated here. He literally did the most he could and got the same feedback from this speech. He deserves the best and I'm glad others who watched the speech acknowledged iy
I'm shocked by the lack of acknowledgement of Alex here, all they did was edit the documentary the main star is Alex and he should be accepting the oscar, what a joke
The male shade is strong with this one. Yes as the music is playing them off the stage, she does manage say a nice thing about Alex, but it's an afterthought. Imagine if she started the speech recognizing the most important thing about the film -- Alex Honnold and his incredible climb, and then maybe said something about how honored she felt to be a small part of such an amazing achievement. And then said Alex come on we really need you say a few words. That would have shown grace, humility and sense of perspective, which her actual speech had absolutely none of. Instead she thanks her kids but forgets her male son, barely acknowledges her husband, over celebrates Alex's girlfriend (who was directly responsible for Alex's worst accident that easily could have killed him), and perhaps way worst of all, completely disses Alex and his accomplishment by saying the film would have been "so boring" without his girlfriend in it. This director is the dictionary definition of a female chauvinist (noun, female who patronizes, disparages, or otherwise denigrates males in the belief that they are inferior to females and thus deserving of less than equal treatment or benefit). Maybe even more cringe-worthy than everything she said was the seven seconds of silence after she grabbed the Oscar and soaked in the wild applause like it was all for her. Her time on the podium was easily the most cringe-worthy thing I've ever witnessed. Overall I think female empowerment is a good thing, but you can also have too much of anything. Anyone, male or female, can get lost in thinking too much of themselves and where they rank in the overall scheme of things. To combine the deluded sense of perspective with the chauvinistic shade enthusiastically thrown at important males in her life makes me wonder how much better the film would have been it was made by a co-director who didn't think everything outside the girlfriend was "so boring." Alex Honnold and his accomplishments are jaw-dropping and inspiring, this film was pretty good and I really liked climber Jason Momoa getting all stoked as he announced the winner. I've seen a few Alex Honnold interviews and my guess is he processed this dumpster fire of a speech as just another surreal moment during the brightest spotlight of his career, and was happy to get back to climbing. I really hope the latest Blu-ray extras of this movie include a clip of the first time Alex and her were alone in a room after this speech. "So you spent 2 years documenting my free solo of El Capitan and your math comes up with: Me and my pursuit minus my girlfriend equals "so boring??" And you felt the need to share this Insight with millions of people? I'm not big on grudges but I promise you the next time I decide to do anything noteworthy you will be the last person I'd call to document it."
I do think the “boring” comment was tongue in cheek humorous. Obviously the content alone of the film was not boring. You can see it as you do, which is a valid perspective to some, but I really think she was just nervous and emotional and wanted to acknowledge what she felt to be important roles in the film.
Pretty accurate perspective my friend. Notice how she has also refused to take her husbands surname. Not even a double barrel surname, just hers. Taking a mans last name after marriage is probably part of the patriarchy to her. She also drew attention to Sanni because that was the part she filmed. She wasn't on the mountain dangling 2 thousand feet in the air. She was at the van asking, how do you feel?. Straight ego, feminism and lack of self awareness. Cringe bro.

Everyone already said it but..... "Oh hey, thanks to the guy behind/next to us for climbing an almost impossible route in record time without dying, thank you for that"
It would be an amazing plot twist if it turns out she was actually not driving home, but actually just around the corner to free solo the Dawn wall right under our noses, and that's what she was referring to in the speech. That would redeem the speech at least.
If it were a documentary film of a lion, should the award be given to the lion? She got the award because of the work she did, you need to understand that Alex was not acting in this movie, although the movie is all about him and he is the main character, Alex has nothing to do with Oscar.
