How the hell did I not know about this man? I've been reading Civil war books and watching civil war movies for over 20 years and I've never head the name Newton Knight. This guy deserves a bigger place in history.
He was a rebel against the rebels? Does that statement not seem a little off? The Confederacy had no problem with secession, what grounds do they have to oppose their one of their counties doing it?
+TheStapleGunKid Definitely gonna read up on non-opinionated sources for this apparent "rebellion against the Confederacy". Perhaps another piece of censored history time forgot, sadly. Good to meet a fellow researcher.
It's one of my all-time favorites, it's so well-made and pretty accurate from what I know. Matthew McConaughey is one of my favorite actors so that really adds to it as well haha
can one of yu guys tell me if this movie have scenes tht as a black person make be traumatized?? i would think so but from the trailer it doesnt seem too bad lol
It's not more popular because it's a fluke it was even made...it exposes the truth about the Democrat party...they owned the slaves & started the k.k.k...the Republican party freed the blacks & gave them the right to vote as they did w/women later on...95% of Hollywood are democrats & the Obamas own big shares of netflix.
Tammo Seppelt. No. The dems still bring in none whites and use them as slaves. Same as socialist parties in the UK do. They want their votes and their cheap labour.
Andy, McWilliams ... Cool! I had a Great Uncle, Milo Knight...gotta see if we are all related. I worked 10 years on my family history and found out I'm related by marriage to John Mellencamp.
Thousands of southern boys served the Union during the Civil War. Not one monument honors their memory anywhere. As a descendant of one of those boys, I am very excited about this film and pleased to know that someone, somewhere has FINALLY acknowledged the fact that not every southerner was a slave-owner or a servant of slave-owners who caused the Civil War in hopes of growing richer.
There is only one monument: in Texas to the German settlers in the Hill Country who were opposed to secession and slavery and who were slaughtered by the Confeds in the Massacre on the Nueces.
Thousands of "northern boys" also served the Confederacy. One of particular note was private Culp from Pennsylvania, serving with Lee's army, and he was ironically killed on his family's farm in July, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg as Lee's forces were attempting to capture "Culp's Hill." Most of the soldiers fighting for the Confederacy didn't own slaves, and were fighting to free their country from what was largely considered an oppressive government. As historian Shelby Foote commented, when a Confederate prisoner of war was asked by a Union officer "Why are you fighting, anyway?", the Rebel responded "Because you're down here...".
They had no opportunity to rise. As of today, your own choices will steer you towards either a path of a minimum wage employee forever or a person who is self employed or has a good career.
Wow!, Ms Lauren. I'm yet to see this movie, but reading your message just now from four years ago, well you can be damned sure I'm watching it now. It sounds like it must be close to the real truth of the story. Which is just how I like my history dramas. I don't know if you'll read this but I'd love to know whether the name 'Newt' was claimed by his descendants and if so, how often. What a great name. I have an Aunty Possum. And she definitely does have a sweet possum nature. Possums in Australia are adorable, non-threatening and have lovely manners. We do not have native newts however. Blessings to you and your family.
Newton Knight was a truly fascinating person. I'm glad he's finally getting the credit he deserves. For the longest time people have romanticised Confederate generals who fought to divide the country and keep slavery, yet we ignore southerners who stood up for what was right.
So excited to see my family's story being told. What rich history we have but more importantly the acknowledgement of Newton's mixed race nation which is where I am most proud of -- Thank you Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Keri Russell as well as all the other actors for bringing this story to the public.
+Benita Knight Direct descendant of Jasper Collins here. Where will you be watching the movie? I mentioned to cousin Victoria Bynum that we should try to charter the movie theatre at Laurel for the premier, descendants only!
Despite negative reviews saying this felt like history channel documentary i thought it was intriguing, interesting, educational and important film. It doesn't go into that blockbuster civil war cliches, it just describes more intimate, personal story which is driven by great motives and unity against the oppressors. Great performances, good writing, interesting directing approach, subtle messages and much more it is truly mesmerizing movie. It doesn't insult, it doesn't stereotype, it is quality film and as a society we still have not evolved from limitations of our minds which are explored here. 4/5
Just wait until the Social Justice Warriors get here, then it'll be all "Fuck Whitey!" Then the feminists will be all "The patriarchy is devaluing the role of blah, blah, blah...." Come back in a couple days, see if I'm wrong.
You are only getting the first comments on the film by unbiased or not so biased people who actually saw the film or are familiar with the story behind it. Wait a few days and the more likely biased and unlikely viewers of the film will start trying to put it down because it dies not reflect their modern Liberal PC View Points or the traditional Southerner Pro Confederate ones who will dislike it as well.
Wolfen443 Now I'm not a liberal, I'm an Revolutionary Anarchist (And I really want to watch this fucking film) but I know this isn't anti-PC, unless your talking about the mainstream political correctness that actually represses conversations about our current system, racism and so on, to preserve the status quo.
Halfway through this film, and it's really affecting my heart in a way any have in a long time. My 3rd Great-Grandpa Issac "Isaiah" "Zade" Tribitt/Trivette (who's colonial ancestry was actually in the seat of the North, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, right next to Philadelphia, and before that, Boston, and originally, in Musbury, Devon, England), was a poor homesteader in the mountains of Appalachia in Ashe County, North Carolina, with his wife & children, probably never 'owned' anything he didn't build, plant, or raise to eat, much less a human being, and who was conscripted into the Confederate Army in the Civil War, but deserted their unjust & evil cause not long after. He not only walked away from the Confederate Army who was taking everything from every farmer/homesteader in that apparent southern union of states they lied about protecting, and who considered every person who wasn't wealthy or in their Army the N-word (and treated them as such - poor white folks were left to starve in a collectivism akin to what Stalin did to Ukraine in the 1930s), but Issac walked away from the entire Confederacy and everything of "The South" completely, by undertaking a massive journey and bringing his family through massive danger all the way to Deuel County, South Dakota, where they lived out the rest of their days well into their 60s (both reached 1900), with at least one descendant making it to Canada where their kin ultimately became me, born in another mountain range, the Rockies. I'm so proud of my 3rd Great-Grandpa, for choosing to do what we today can say was the right thing, knowing that this wasn't his fight, and realizing that the real enemy was a machine forcing someone to murder another human being that they don't even know, at a time & place where that kind of radical thinking & doing meant them up in a tree if they allowed themselves to be taken, if found. There is great strength & resilience in doing the right thing, though, and I'm proud to say that their choice of humanity and maintaining freedom to live & to choose why still runs strongly through my body today. 💖
Eh, not really since a lot of the "neo-Confederates" are really just southerners that are proud of their heritage. That doesn't necessarily mean they're racists or elitists, there's plenty of good from the south to be proud of. I, myself, am a northerner (from Pennsylvania) and my mother's side of the family has been here for generations but my father's side is native to Tennessee. There were heroes and villains on both sides and even then, things weren't entirely black and white (or, shall I say, blue and gray). The Confederacy's defense of slaves was immoral and the war was sparked mostly over the wealthy plantation owners' desire to stay wealthy but there were legitimate reasons for their secession as well, such as the continual suppression of states' rights. In general, I think our modern society can learn a lot from this era of our history.
@Harry Paul It happened for a variety of reasons but slavery alone was not the primary reason. The Civil War was not originally a matter of morality so much as it was about states' rights. And no, it wouldn't have caused it sooner. There were issues that arose during that era in regards to states' rights. Like I said, I'm not saying slavery wasn't one of the reasons the war was fought, I'm just saying that it wasn't the only reason it was fought. It's sad that a war had to be fought over those issues but it resulted in the good of the nation since states' rights were more carefully considered and slaves were freed. I am proud of my heritage to a degree, but I'm also not blind to the fact that a lot of wars are unnecessary. The Civil War was necessary in many ways, but it could have been avoided had the government been more careful and diplomatic in the way they handled matters so that the war wouldn't have broken out.
Great film, I’d rate it a 8/10, mostly for uniform incarucaies and a few other things. But some critics are rating it a 5/10 or 6/10 which is outrageous.
+markanthony1004 As a descendant of Andersons, Shows', Collins', and Powells, nobody can ever tell me that war was not one of brother against brother. All us descendants of Jones County are so interrelated that we can't just pick a side based on family ties, we're all kin to both sides on the issue.
We lost the peace, big time. When the shooting stopped the Federal Government sent three field armies into the south to "keep the peace" and make sure that the Republicans won all the state and local elections by stationing black soldiers at the voting locations. It was called "Reconstruction" and was more deadly to the blacks than slavery ever was. This went on for 13 years until the Democrats took over and imposed the ""Jim Crow" laws which kept blacks in bondage until 1965 when Lyndon B Johnson, a crook in his own right, started the massive government giveaway programs which last until today. Of course this is something the Federal public daycare system laughingly called "Public Education" will never tell you in school.
I lost my faith in humanity ages ago. Tolerance of everything is not the way to go, it makes people soft. Thus why they do not care for the reality of what life was like back then, and still is now. They would prefer to sit on Twitter tweeting about how great Ghostbusters was, and how "empowering" it was, than to face reality. I am truly tired of the pure filth our species has become.
+PK PK If you like philosophy and you didn't already discover Schopenhauer, i recommend him strongly, i'm pretty sure you like his opinions about the human nature ;-)
PK PK You're welcome. You can start with quotes from him, as an "appetizer". You'll found out that this guy has written down everything about the human attitude and life. It's a funny fact that many are judging him as a misanthrop (Feminazis even as a misogynist ;-D) , but the truth is that he loved life and just couldn't tolerate the lowest human instincts. For me good old Arthur became something like my personal Bible, but he's definitely not for people who believe "Ghostbusters" is art ;-)
King Without A Crown Absolutely, I remember the days when you could tell someone the truth without being called a "racist homophobic misogynistic bigot" lol. And the sheer amount of utter filth that people listen, watch, and tolerate nowadays is ridiculous. Thanks, I looked at a few of his quotes, I will have to start reading some of his work.
Thank God, finally a trailer that actually shows what the movie is about. I'm sick of seeing so many commercials for this film that just show a bunch of quotes saying how great it is and how great Matthew McConaughey is. If it weren't for the title and some confederate style uniforms in the trailer I might not have even known it was about the civil war before watching this video. Seriously. I don't know about everybody else, but I watch movies I think I'm going to like because the plot sounds interesting. Not because some other people thought it was good and there's a famous guy in it.
+Miles Skillman your profile pic reminded me the only film im more excited to see this year than Free state of jones is the assassins creed movie coming out in december
+Justin Bell I'm sorry but i don't think the civil war was 4 generations ago xD (300-400 years ago) unless all of your relatives died at fifty until now
The hell's wrong with you people! the movie is about a real person! historical figure! Maybe you'll blame Wikipedia and history book for "posting spoilers"?!
EXCELLENT MOVIE. I need to read more history on Newt Knight, he was under represented in our history of this war. Hollywood showed Knight (McConaughy) raising the U.S. Flag in the end. I suspect that was most likely not true? From what I see in today’s South, a majority of Southerners don’t have the fight in them. And if drafted into another Civil War, they would become deserters for non-noble reasons. American by birth, Southern by Choice.
@@dlwst44 No..there were many many things that were wrong, but, it was decent., bout 80% close to real...with Newt's brother being my great, great Grandfather, family know things that are way different than the movie...
surprisingly there were quiet a few, didn't learn about much of them in history classes though. you have to go on tours in the south to hear more about them or with movies like this too, i guess.
IV C Unfortunately, it's very true. They even have a name... Abolitionists which you may already be aware of. The most famous one was John Brown. He and his sons actually died trying to start a revolution to end slavery. Granted he went about it the wrong way. But there will likely never be a movie about him. John Brown's actions and death became a cautionary tale to deter others from trying to free slaves. Benj Franklin was also an Abolitionist who tried through government and legislation to end the practice of slavery. This country as a whole has always worked hard to wipe History of those things that may make Blacks feel pride in being American and leave Whites believing Blacks were never important in building the country America is today. . Many non-racists Whites started systems and bureaus to help newly freed slaves, such as the Freedmen's bureau, similar to the early efforts of the Department of Indian Affairs. They fought in Congress to provide reputations similar to that done in England in the 1830's. They fought for anything they could for ex-slaves like the 40 acres and mule and even raised funds to provide ex-slaves with housing and education. They were the reason Reconstruction was the law for about 10 years. Several of them were the ones that started the NAACP Alas, as I've stated before the South won the hate. Along with many new members of Congress, a succession of racist Presidents, Blacks lost at every turn. Even Hollywood turned Southern Whites into heroes and Blacks into demons. The Birth of a Nation was screened at the White House by President Woodrow Wilson who was an open racist and possibly a member of the KKK. Blacks are still reaping the hate born out of the American Government turning their backs on them. Sad but true. That's why I always say, "You can't change History but when it's your turn what will History say (or not say) about you?"
Actually a movie was made in 1939 about John Brown with the renowned Canadian actor Raymond Massey playing the title role and a very young Erroll Flynn playing a very young George Armstrong Custer.
William Dean Oh I don't doubt there may be one, I will have to check it out although I have little hope that it depicted him as anything other than a "misguided fool.." But thanks. .
This reminds me of Joseph Fleming Thomason and his son dying during the civil war and if memory serves me correctly he carried his dead son a long way. Memory failing me on the rest of the story. He was my second or third great grandmother's brother. Talking about the father and son in the beginning of the intro. I don't remember which battle it was or the circumstances but they were from Kentucky.
There were a LOT of southerners who opposed secession and wanted nothing to do with the "Rich man's war and poor man's fight." I believe the Union Army fielded regiments from every one of the secessionist states. North Alabama (see the Free State of Winston) and East Tennessee were had a lot of pro-Union feeling. The entire western part of Virginia seceded from that state and entered the Union as the State of West Virginia.
Is it just me or is this the best movie ever. If I'm being honest I can't find nothing negative about the making of this movie it is so clear described from a different perspective. I remembered the first time I watched the movie it was a mind blower at the time because I lacked information from the civil war the South vs the north

obama has a secret army in "sleeper cells," and "no go zones" They are located all over America and they are anxiously waiting for the signal, so they can begin the massacre.
Very thankful for the insight into an unknown chapter of history. A period of horror whose heroes, many I suspect are forgotten. Touching, well acted and certainly inspiring!
I dont know what happened to marketing of this movie, but I had no idea it was a thing until I was checking to see new movies releasing. It looks really in-depth and engaging. McConaughey is always interesting. Cant wait for this to release on google or at the video store.
McConaughey gave an interview about the movie to a New Orleans mag. He says that Free State of Jones takes the story into the period of Reconstruction and how Civil Rights and Voting Rights for black citizens should have been a given when the war ended, and were taken away by Confederate revenge groups organized by the rich planters... who are still in power today. Knight and his family had more trouble in Reconstruction than even during the Civil War as he had a black wife and biracial children. So the trailer probably only covers the beginning of the story. I wouldn't worry too much about the whole movie being given away by the trailer.
Its been unnoticed for the most part because July is a very big month for movies like the shitty Ghostbusters remake, the Star Trek Sequel that shouldn't have been made, among others.
I was honestly disappointed by this movie. It looked like it was about someone going up against all odds and beating them anyway from the trailer. The end isn't like that and instead almost gives the message that sometimes no matter how hard you fight you can't win. It made me cry with frustration.
My mother's family is French Canadian and Metis. Deep south Cajun French survived the English of a much earlier and brutal era and many of their descendants refused to fight (north or south) in the "Englishman's war" between the states. Visiting New Orleans in 2000 I heard a younger local crowd speaking their own French which sounded strange and familiar at the same time, compared to my grandmother's.
Amazing movie, just watched it in cinema. Matthew McConaughey and everybody else played so well, i thought they play themselve really :) Great movie, touched me deeply
Trailer was amazing the ambush in the woods was awesome, some of the Raiders die, which set up the best part of the trailer..... The Ambush Out of the Coffin which was just Amazing!!! Can't wait to see this movie!!!
Whether you agree with the politics or not it's a damn good story and looks like an amazing movie and it really talks about the issue of southern people going out into the fields and dying by the thousands so the wealthy politicians and plantation owners can keep using slave labor while using the poor southerners as their pawns talking about states rights and it's good to see that there were some who knew better now I have full respect for those who fought for the confederacy even the generals in the civil war but the confederate politicians hell no they lied to the southern people and used them so they can keep their profit and that's disgusting
Love this film,so powerful and true i cried at the end of the film, Matthew McConaughey is a great actor and he played the part well, the story was amazing and one part i liked , you cant own the child of god, every man should have the right to be called a man ,no matter what colour they r…..heres a story for you,i was shopping and saw this old black man carrying a heavy bag of shopping,he was struggling I said would you like some help sir,, he said to me im no sir,i said all good men are sir in my eyes,he had tears in his eyes,i saw him again with my mum,he told my mum you have a good son , mum said i know ,thank you sir and he asked me if he could hug my mum ,my mum said you dont need to ask and mum hugged him,i would help any good person if they needed it,my mum passed away 6 years ago ,i havnt seen the man again, mabey he’s passed, now im on my own not by choice,i was going to marry but when i got my wheelchair she didnt want to marry me,now i need help theres no one to help me 😢
Had to watch it twice, great performances from lots of actors. I had never heard of Newton. My first reaction was the loss of Lincoln after the war, he might have prevented a lot of the aftermath.
And there was the "Independent State of Dade." Dade County GA, just below Chattanooga, TN, which may have seceded from GA b/c GA was too slow to secede from the Union and then refused to rejoin the Union after the end of the Civil War. Truman formally welcomed them back into the union in 1945. The GA state quarter has Dade county actually cropped off (or it appears to be). Anway, having grown up in the south, I'm glad to see that the recognition of the mix of pro-union vs pro-confederate populations is being brought to light. If you like this kind of movie, btw, check out "pharaoh's army" (?).
When Lucinda Williams sang "I'm Crying" during the end credits I did too. It has always been about the rich using the little people to stay rich. Until this day. Oil is the new cotton.
packr72 History is written by the victors. If and Washington his fellow Patriots lost the War of Independence, you'd be saying the exact same thing about them. Not to mention, countries such as Japan lost to the U.S. and it's allies, yet they are still aloud to be proud of their country and culture, and Japan did some of the most screwed up stuff during World War II. And also, you just said that the Confederacy wasn't recognized yet you also said that it was a "rogue nation", so clearly you recognize the C.S.A. as a nation (at that time anyway).
***** Fine it was a terrorist state. If Washington lost then there would never have been a confederacy and neither of us would be here. Totally irrelevant too, nice deflection. The South fired first too.
Jillian Dominguez Ask yourself this: why would a young man, not matter his color, put his life on the line, risk getting getting shot, losing a limb, being unable to walk, see, or hear again, or killed, just so some and owner he's never met can keep his/her slaves? I know I wouldn't. Also, why don't you actually go and look up this stuff on your own. I can even recommend some sources. Like this one: www.southernheritage411.com And I want you to actually LOOK. Not just comment more close minded, "progressive" bullshit.
@@ogorjefan Because the guy who made Hunger Games made this movie, and those movies sucks. But i like the idea of a civil war movie with people rebelling against confederacy. I just dont like when they make up stuff i guess
@@kejiri3593they didn’t make up much, it’s pretty accurate. The only inaccuracies were some characters weren’t real, like Moses, or the confederate Calvary leader. But those two were a combination of multiple real people.
Good to see the patriots of the south are finally being presented in film. Let it be known that there were men Loyal tour Union in the South who took up arms with the escaped against against the Slavers and their lackeys.
I don't think I've ever been as angry that critics bashed a movie. For as much as I hate most of what hollywood puts out these days, I was telling myself during this movie how great/refreshing it was to go to a movie with good acting, a fresh plot, and an intelligent message. I read the reviews on the way home fully expecting everyone to rave about it. Instead it's being called boring, slow, and according to one "a better story for a history class than the big screen" Mark my words, these are the stories worth telling. It makes me sad and a little worried that our society no longer appreciates movies/stories like this.
i watched the film this evening on a dvd borrowed from a library and can't believe i never heard about it from anyone; people who care about such issues should have this on their list of well made informative films ...as for the people complaining; bored? more like indifferently boring ☹
I honestly think the trailer was good why y'all got beef with it? Like the funeral scene. That's probably not the only surprise tactic the characters use man. Also the kid dying isn't really a spoiler it makes sense to add it to the trailer
+Lukass I'm descended from the Daniel Sumrall for whom Sumrall, MS was named. He was a part of the free state of jones as well but left because Newt wasn't nothing but a thug that stole from the people he claimed to protect. Look up the book Echo Of The Black Horn, it has first hand accounts of that dirt bag.
The editor wouldn't get the final say on how much to reveal. The market research told the producers/studio that potential audience members might see the movie as too preachy and historical so they needed an action/violence hook to get more people in. A valid decision even if it spoils the scene.
