Today I wanna share the first part of the things I've found FOR FREE on my travel to Rome - things to put into a travel junk journal, a travel journaling box, a travelers notebook etc.! I'm sure you can find many of the things I show in my video elsewhere, you don't necessarily have to pack your suitcase and go traveling for that. I collage an accordion booklet as I travel. Other ideas are soap wrappers, toilet paper wrappers, seals from soap and toilet paper, salt and pepper in papers, paper table cloths, placemats, brochures and maps, tickets, hotel key holders (cute little folders with a pocket), coasters in hotel room, straw covers, hotel luggage tags, and even things you find in the gutter. I prefer the thin rectangular sugar wrappers that I often find in North Africa and the Balkans, especially when the writing is in Arabic, Greek or Cyrillic. I travel with small groups and after a few days, others join in the hunt. It becomes a cooperative scavenger hunt and I not only remember where things came from, but who gave them to me. I also keep a travelers notebook, where I keep a lot of ephemera, but that it 75% writing.

PS The best thing I did was bring a tiny notebook to make notes of what happened every day and who we met along the way! I never would have remembered the little details.

Hello Luise, Another good reason to use receipts is to reference them to chart the itinerary of the trip, step by step. You can on a separate piece of paper write down a list with day and date, time and place. This can help in the planning of your journal, if you want the journal to record the trip chronologically. This list can be helpful to recall the way the trip unfolded, of course you don't have to include the actual list, but it can serve as an outline. Sometimes we forget these details by the time we get home! What do you think? I love that you have a glass of Roman sugar! It is Romantic! how's that for a pun? Also the metal pieces from the coca-cola cans are called PULL-TABS. 🙂 Cheers from Berkeley, CA.

Oh Luise!!! Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us. Love all the videos - esp that outside cafe! We took a long Amtrak trip and my hubby joined in the hunt for random stuff to bring home. It was SO fun to scrapbook that trip (two 12 x 12 books). Turned out to be quite a story as he broke his ankle in the tiny bathroom on the train in the middle of the night on our way back home! Firemen to the rescue, surgery and ten days stuck in Utah!

I was recently on trio to Hong Kong and find that couldn't do junk journaling instead did some drawings from memories and urban sketching. I collect lots of random stuff on my travels such as stuff on plane, cofee cup holders. I went to Entertainment Centre and picked up lots of leaflets. Very easy to get Ephemera, I went to Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama Exhibition in M+ but couldn't get any postcards I have the ticket but took lots of photos. Be sure to include snack wrappers as they are ephemera too. I have stuff from past Hong Kong trips which haven't yet documented yet. Going abroad is great but don't like the travelling tok much walking. It looks you have large haul there. I just checked out your Etsy store and couldn't help noticing the Golden pages ephemera. I'm in midst of fussy cutting lots of animals imagery from large book.

I loved seeing all the exciting goodies from your travels, I too don't usually do the typical touristy things, we always carry a snap lock bag and water colour pencils and if we find an interesting leaf, we put it in the bag and when we get back to the hotel we make a print of it in a small art journal. Artsy travelling is the most fun way to travel for me, I just love it. Thanks Luise for sharing all this with us and for the tips as well.

Great idea to copy receipts and use them rather than the original-they have a tendency to fade. I would not have thought to empty the sugar packets and recall the trip when you use the sugar! I visited a wonderful restaurant in Dallas called Celebrations. When the server noticed I was trying to remove the label from the wine bottle, she offered to take it off and she put it on the back of the menu that listed the day’s specials.

I'm so glad to see there are people like me out there - both in your videos and these comments. I have always collected bits and bobs from wherever we've explored. I don't keep the pieces with a view of having them forever, but leave them in a box that I can take out and revisit the experience, event or trip when I feel nostalgic. When they have served their purpose, I discard them. My hubby has always been supportive of my little idiosyncrasies, even asking if I want something before he tosses it. Asking for bottle caps and taking the label of a beer - that is SO something I have done! :D

Ah Luise, Rome is a fantastic place, hope you got to the coliseum too, I will never forget walking down a normal street and there it was, larger than life! WOW! Anyway, I digress, all the ephemera you collected is fab, I can see a travel journal coming up....I was out for dinner tonight and I was looking at everyone's table with an eagle eye!!!! Even the fries came with a cool lining paper on the basket, great ideas!!

Thank you for this! I’ve been traveling across Europe and then Asia from Japan to Australia and I didn’t know what to pick up. Now I’m at the tail end and wishing I didn’t throw all of my receipts out. However I never thought of sugar bags ! Will do it next time!

I like all your bits and pieces... anything on paper when you travel is a memory to treasure for me. Drink coasters are one of my favorites. I think people/businesses are trying to save $$ where-ever they can, and advertising is usually a big chunk. May be why the sugar packets/bags changed. A new day... a new adventure. =:o)

I love your sugar packet collection and emptying them into a special Roman sugar jar is wonderful! I'll take a look at the sugar packets here in Western Canada but as I recall, they're all from the same company and extremely boring.

Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad to know that I am not the only one who collects labels maps and other treasures when traveling. I've even been bold enough to ask servers for clean coasters etc. And been lucky to have received same, sometimes with a look of "I don't believe you want this". I took my granddaughter to Italy several years ago and am enjoying remembering that time with her while watching your videos.

On the sugar packet you can also cut a small X or slit in the back side of the packet to empty the sugar. Then the entire front is kept intact. If you are a tea drinker as I am. You can also keep the packets that contain the tea bags the actual tea bag with its tag. Dry out the tea bag and empty the used tea leaves. Now you have tea bag paper to make ephemera on as well as the packet and tag to make ephemera . I also keep the coffee cup hot sleeves that protect your hands while the coffee is very hot and you are carrying it. In America at the hotels there are frequently brochures for places to visit that include Maps as well as photos of the place you want to visit. The bottle caps could also be turned into charms to hang on the side of a junk Journal. It's fun to watch what people collect to put in a junk travel Journal. It's the same stuff I used to collect when I was very young and put it in what we called a scrapbook. Junk journals tend to be smaller, and I think more fun to create. You could also make a small slit in the back of the sugar packet especially if you will be gluing it down.

You can also drill a small hole through the metal bottle tops: then use them on dangles.

Liebe Luise, bin ich froh, dass nicht nur ich zuckerpäckchen mitnehme 😂. In Südtirol im 5⭐️ hotel habe ich die Untersetzer vom Service angefragt, da hier Retro Bilder unter das Weinglas gelegt wurden ( hat den weinkonsum gesteigert) . In Mumbai habe ich sogar die wunderschönen teepäcken mitgenommen. Künftig werde ich alles sammeln für das Journal und weiß, ich bin nicht gaga. Danke für dein Mega Kreativität. Lg Agathe

Unfortunately I don't have a video about that. But it's just an old book - I've taken the pages out, covered everything with paper, made two holes into the spine to attach the elastic bands.... ready to go
