An Australian Senator has already said that freedom of movement is an easy fix with the UK, because we are adopting their immigration systems, even with New Zealand. Now we just need Canada and we will have the old family back together, America being an ally is a major bonus.
Jerry O Sullivan Australia has close historical, military, familial, cultural, linguistic links with U.K. As the High Commissioner said, more UK citizens live, work & retire in Oz than in entire EU. BTW your WiFi is an Australian invention.
Benny G It’s curious how 54 independent countries of the former British Empire are voluntarily in the Commonwealth. That 15 have Queen as Head of State. That many more have her head on their currency. That one African country not in the Empire voluntarily asked to join in 2007. The story of the Empire being only one of unremitting, relentless saga of endless theft & invasion has another side. As these 54 countries acknowledge.
Jerry O’Sullivan, just grabbing at any negative you can clutch at. Fine you’re not happy, then why are you angry about it? If the uk is making a mistake or doing things that are so bad, why he mad about it? Let the game play, acting all butt hurt shows your real feelings
The difference negotiating a free trade deal with Australia both sides want it done so it will be done quickly. Negotiating with the EU one side doesn't want it to happen.
David Lulham However your free trade deal with EU comes at the cost of ever closer union & loss of sovereignty in law making. De Gaulle was right. U.K. is a maritime nation. If look outwards to entire world. Not to a late 20th century construct to solve mid 20th problems to play the 19th century Great Game.
That's because it's a trade deal with 27 countries and worth at least 10 times a trade deal with Australia.....which is on the other side of the planet.
@aboutthetruthmedia organization yep they do but its Straya. Then ARVO, Avo, Ambo, smoko, servo, chook, snag, bottle-o, brekky etc. See I'm almost an Aussie
@Scottish which will be less advantageous than under EU rules. Australia, and other countries are unlikely to compromise their trade with a massive trading bloc like the EU by giving us, l'll ole Britain, a better deal than they have with the EU
@Scottish I thought I had explained. Australia, or any other country WILL NOT compromise their deal with the EU to give us a better deal. The EU being the bigger party will then want the same. So thats why the deal with us will be inferior to the one the will have, band of course at the moment we have with Australia and other countries. Do you know understand a little more how international trade operates. The big boys get the better deal.
EU and china are very similar ... bully nations they deem "theirs" with laws and tariffs regardless of democracy of voting. I original voted remain... how wrong was I. Cant wait to get rid. Nations like the uk australia and the usa need to stick together we will be much better off in the long run!
Andy burns are they bullies because they don’t do what they’re told by the UK? Boris agreed on a deal and now he’s backtracking on it. Nothing new from the lying man
@@riccagiaco we will not be dictated too by Europeans with shit economies fed up of propping up your countries that are struggling. I want a no deal mate, it might be hard at first but we are better off in the end. Look at what's happening this is the end of the eu and the end of the failed currency which is the euro... good luck to you next 15 years going to be pretty rough for you lot. But dont worry turkey is now in the eu! I'm sure they will help LOADS!
Both sides have indicated that they want a 1 page trade deal suggesting that they want free trade. This makes sense as the economies of the 2 countries are not in competition for the most part. It would benefit both sides to sit down at the earliest opportunity and get this done.
That's what the remoaners and EU want you to think. Commonwealth countries with a common mutual interest and a common sense attitude want to get trade deals quickly.
Could be worthwhile , Australia invented Wi-Fi , Leaders in Micro-Surgery , burns treatments , Ball Tampering etc and Sydney time zone an anglo-asian hub if Hong Kong becomes untenable . NZ should also be a walk in the park ....
Good News for Skilled workers coming to Australia. I remember years ago top of our required list was radiologist and pastry cooks. Lucky I have dual citizenship.
Don't buy European food, fine please help yourself with your unhealthy crap of fries, pies, sausage rolls, mushy peas, tin food go back drinking tea - - obesity, diabete, alcoholism...... Yes back to the past - -spend your holiday in sunny deprived rundown Blackpool, Scarborough AMEN
The EU is sounding more and more like the jilted bunny boiler ex-lover every day. How many times do we have to say it. *We are done, it's over. We've moved on and so should you. We can still be friends.*
Now no use crying over spilt milk. But the UK could have been trading here, continuously, had you not cut us out when you ran off to your ex wife, the EU
Jerry O Sullivan rubbish. Britain and Australia have always had a strong and historic relationship, this is just cementing that on paper with perhaps some new benefits as well such as free movement or easier migration. After all a lot of the mining companies extracting iron ore, uranium and gold are Anglo Australian in nature.
The UK and Australia are linked by history, culture and blood bonds that are deep-rooted. We are friends and friends should always be able to cooperate. We share the same Head of State for God's sake. A Free Trade Deal? Simples. All the Anglosphere should be able to come together and be a force for mutual support. Pity South Africa has been largely lost.
Strangely, we're about to tariff wine from France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sicily, Belgium, Portugal etc. etc. So Ozzy wine ought to be given a bit of a boost regardless of trade agreement. As will Chilean, African, American etc.
"A free trade agreement is a pact between two or more nations to reduce barriers to imports and exports among them. Under a free trade policy, goods and services can be bought and sold across international borders with little or no government tariffs, quotas, subsidies, or prohibitions to inhibit their exchange." Sounds good and pretty straight forward to me, why should that take months ?
What would say Welsh farmers if UK will be flooded with a cheap lamb meat from Australia. To prevent such situations you need to agree on rules "level play field" before you remove tariffs and quotes.
Cant wait. I would love Australians to come here. What a great thing for western civilisation. Just wait for the marxists to react and throw their friends teddys out of their friends prams
@notts guy I point you to the 457 visa that Aus has used for years to bring in skilled migrants (for the most part) in short areas. I think people are a lot more comfortable with immigration from the Anglosphere where shared cultural and political practices/traditions make social integration much less problematic. I reiterate, longer term visas only in areas where we are short and cannot quickly train enough people to bridge the shortfall.
Free movement? Yes . Put CAN AUS NZ back where they were before we joined the EEC in 1973. We are kin. My father was an RAF pilot in WW2, his navigator was Australian; they stayed in touch for the rest of their lives. I have Canadian 2nd cousins I have never met.
it should make the EU think , that the UK would rather be in Union with a country on the other side of the Planet the Lovely Australians , then those 20 miles off the coast.
Love australia! We share a very similar culture... amazing country much better together need to stop our politicians being corrupted by Ccp money. We will be so much better off. Maybe not at first but imagine the power china and eu would have if this keeps going for another 20 years
I'd actually welcome freedom of movement between Australia and the UK: There is no language barrier and the economies are similar. People were put off by EU freedom of movement because it was one way traffic from Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Lithuania (poor countries with no common language or good quality of life). I understand both sides may disagree with me!
Australia is buying the Type 26 frigate. It seems logical we also dump the French submarine contract and buy the Astute Class nuclear submarines instead
In the words of Mr Punch, that's the way to do it. Let's hope the deals being struck come off wherever our negotiators work, except with the diatribe merchant Barnier et Al.
I am so pleased to hear what this gentleman had to say with regard to the young people and trade. I have in laws and relatives in Australia and it would be great for us as a family to enjoy visits and trips and maybe even stay awhile with the assurance that all is well between our two countries. The advantages of trade between us and maybe even exchange working trips for the youngsters could be a huge advantage for all concerned.
no ours will be better the eu will take years and will be far more complicated, don't forget 27 countries only one has to say no don't like it then it blocks the whole deal. The canadian/EU deal took 8 years
@@andrewmarriott7970 Not so difficult if you copy/paste existing trade deals and you don't care about the consequences because you don't have moral values and don't mind screwing the working man/woman. However, it's strange that the copied Japan-UK deals is actually worse on some aspects. It's mainly beneficial for the Japanese. According to a government report about the UK-Japan deal. The time it takes is not so important, the EU has dozens of FTA's with almost the whole world.
@@y.t.nagging7169 one could assume you are possibly were or still are a remainer ,so we will both see this from two different sides, lets just say we'll agree to disagree. But don't question me on moral values, you don't know me and it is very ignorant and arrogant to assume what my moral values are, I could question yours but that would be stooping to your level. I am working class, so again you assumed and of course no nothing about me. Also who do you think voted in there masses to vote leave. What i vote for is my choice what you vote for is your choice, again that's democracy, so get over yourself, I've lived with the 1972 vote for membership of the EEC/EU all my life, so now the boots on the other foot, get used to it because it's here.
The UK should become a province of Canada. Then, they would automatically have a free-trade deal with the EU, the US, Mexico, and Canada. The Queen would still be head of state, but the downside is that you would have to trade Boris for Trudeau. The Westminster parliament would become a provincial parliament.
Australia does not have a big enough economy to help the UK, we don't produce enough or buy enough to make any difference to the UK. The EU is Australia's 2nd biggest trading partner, the UK is about 10% of that, if you leave the EU you lose that 10% and then you get it back with a separate deal where is the gain? if you can't or won't do a deal with the EU, you will need a lot more than Australia to make up the difference.
With a population of 20 mil and being ex British colony it's obvious you have more British than continental Europe... Looking forward to see Ozzie veggies and fruits, it takes a month for a shipment to get here :)))
It's only two countries, that's of course easier than 1 and 27 countries want to make a trade deal. But you are in a much stronger position, if you have 27 countries backing you.
According to Wine Australia on the EU Customs Union '...Australian wine faces an import tariff of €0.13 to €0.15 per litre...' A bottle of wine holds a volume of 0.75 litres. Those who paid attention in mathematics class will realize that an FTA with the UK will make 'sweet FA' difference to the shop price of Aussy plonk.
FTA`s take years usually so the only reason I can surmise as to the alleged speed of this a UK/Aus FTA is because the primaries of the EU/Aus FTA is near complete and we are likely to be piggybacking on that hard won deal? To quote the Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade Department (DFAT) "Australia and the European Union (EU) launched negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) on 18 June 2018. Based on 2018-19 data, as a bloc, the EU (we were still a part of the EU until January 2020) was Australia's second largest trading partner, third largest export destination, and second largest services export market. The EU was Australia's largest source of foreign investment in 2018" Further the DFAT argue that "... an FTA with the EU has the potential to open up a market for Australian goods and services of half a billion people and a GDP of US$18.7 trillion. It would provide Australian exporters with a competitive edge, and would give Australian businesses access to a larger export market in the EU. Australian consumers and companies stand to benefit from a free trade deal with the EU, through greater access to goods and services at lower prices." Which is exceptionally good news for the Australian economy generally and begs the question: why on earth are we running in the opposite direction to this kind of market opportunity?
EU deals take a long time because they have to satisfy every single member, plus the other country. It's like trying to create 27 different trade deals all in one. A UK/AUS trade deal only has to satisfy two parties. To see the difference try and arrange a date with one person and a party with 28 where everyone is happy with all the arrangements. The latter is much much harder.
@Firm Buttocks Britain and Australia have already been in informal talks for months. Britain will also have been aware of the negotiations between the EU and Australia. So both parties should have a pretty good idea of what will be acceptable to the other. If both parties then agree that they can do a deal in a few months then who are we to say that they can't?
I'm happy about Brexit but we must remember that the UK dropped us like a hot potato to join the EU...the UK gave little thought to the impact on Australia then.....just saying
