I watched the 1993 film, Free Willy, starring Jason James Richter, Michael Madsen, August Schellenberg, Lori Petty, Jayne Atkinson, Michael Bacall, Mykelti Williamson, Richard Riehle, Michael Ironside, and of course the star of the show, Keiko! This film got a little personal for me because as an Icelander, I know the story of Keiko all too well. He is still to this day, ironically, remembered as one of Iceland's most famous movie stars, and I say ironically because it was indeed my nation who captured him and forced him into this show business in the first place. So this film was bittersweet for me guys.

I love this film and Free Willy 2. I rewatched them numerous times when I was a child in the 90s. I was heartbroken to hear Keiko died in 2003, I remember first reading about it in the newspaper when I lived in Mexico and feeling a wave of coldness envelop my body. For years I had hoped life had imitated art for once, and was overjoyed to learn 3 years after Free Willy this lovely orca had been released into the wild, and yet to see things turn bleak was a reality check I didn't need at 11 years old.

Yes falling into an orca tank would be terrifying cause they're extremely stressed and very aggressive in captivity. Very different story in the ocean though. They have never attacked a human in the wild. Not once.

I understand completely how you feel about the movie and Keiko, my heart was heavy watching this with you as I was in Grade 12 when the process to free him started and we also followed his story to the end, so eventhough it was more close to home for you than for me, it was surely an integral part of our young adult lives that left an impact on us 💔😢

All male Orcas in captivity have a collapsed dorsal finn. It is extremely rare for it to happen in the wild. Only in captivity.

I cried when I watched a documentary on Keiko because the whaler had a hand in his capture, was recounting the tale and he said something that stuck with me 😢😢😢😢 he said the whales that died in the nets they'd weigh Down so they'd sink so the authorities wouldn't find them.. 😢😢😢😢 RIP Keiko humans truly failed you 😔.... Many elementary school kids saved many many pennies for you...

A classic of the 'Kid and their X' (animal, robot, alien, etc) genre. The abuse of animals for aquarium and zoos is tragic.
@Angelicwings1
@Angelicwings1 2 года назад
Aquariums and zoos also help save species and care for animals that wouldn’t make it in the wild. Bad zoos and aquariums should be shut down but a zoo here in Australia is reintroducing endangered species into the wild using a breeding program. Having said that there is no way people can properly house an orca. They shouldn’t be in captivity.

@@katreacts6843 I remember stories of sailors that had a very close relationship with orcas, that spanned over generations, and that idea fascinated me...but when I looked into it further, I learned that the sailors were whale-hunters, and the orcas helped them hunt and herd the whales, and got meat rewards from successful killing...so that made it less interesting to me.

When this first came out, I was too young to understand much of what whales like Keiko were going through. The movie gave the premise that it was wrong, but it wasn't really until the documentary "Blackfish" gave me a glimpse of real life tragedies for both orcas and trainers alike.

Great reaction! Just 2remarks: 1. There has never been any incident reported where a killerwhale attack a human in the wild, so they don't just kill everything, they are mostly as pods for certain foods. Eg the ones off the cost in Norway are mostly eating fish, the resident orcas in british columbia eat a lot of salmon, and there is a single pod of orcas in Argentina where the members beach themselves to catch seals. They can also kill big whales, even blue whales, but they don't just kill anything and especially not humans. In captivity however it is a different story, there have been multiple killings of trainers by orcas. 2. The dorsal fins of captive orcas are all bent over. It is not 100% sure why, but there might be several reasons combined: - These animals can swim 100 kilometers per day in the wild, and it takes some swimming to keep those fins straight. - In their tanks there is no protection from the sun. Orcas are black, so they absorb a lot of sunlight and in these tanks they get sunburns, which also damages the dorsal fins. Dorsal fins are fairly quickly bent over, even when an orca is stranded you can sometimes see how the dorsal fin is already bent over, that happens fast. - Captive orcas are going through boredom and trauma in the tank, the psychological damage might also be a factor.

It''s maybe too soon to tell you this since it left you so uplifted and I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news if you are not aware but from what we were told in the states, Keiko had been in captivity for so long that after being released he was never able to adapt to the wild, didn't know how to interact with other orcas or find his own food and had to live around and be fed by marine biologists for the remainder of his life. Further evidence of how wrong it is to keep these animals in captivity.

Had you watched my intro you would have listened to me talk about Keiko :) I am well aware of his sad story since he is one of my country's most famous animal. We learned about Keiko in school, and every single Icelander knows his name at least, if not also his story. It's such a sad story all around, but it did have somewhat of a happy ending since he died free.
@itt23r
@itt23r 2 года назад
@@katreacts6843 I did see your intro but i didn't hear you say anything about his inability to survive in the wild after being released into it. My apologies though for presuming I might have known more about his final fate than you did. I just thought when you didn't bring it up in the intro that maybe, your being so young when he was set free, that your elders mught have wanted to shield you from any bad news about him.

@@itt23r No worries :) No, his reality is very much known to us Icelanders, grown-ups and children as well. We watched it in excitement when he was "brought home" and then got regular updates on his condition between 1998 and 2002 when he was "free" - as in he lived in the wild but in a designated area where he could be monitored and taught how to live free. Then, when he was released in 2002, he swam to Norway and died there in 2003 at the age of 27 (way too young for a killer whale). So his whole story is very tragic, although it did have a happier ending than him dying in a small container. His story is very well known in my country :)

I just discovered your channel and find it commendable having looked at your playlists that you really do review movies that none of the others are reacting to. I saw some of my favorite comedies on those lists. But I also noticed that comedies seem to make up the bulk of what you are reviewing. Do you have an aversion or something to emotionally charged movies, unforgettable movies telling true stories that will stay with you the rest of your life? Because if you don't and are game I can think of many great and extremely powerful movies from the 90s and earlier that none of your competitors seem to be aware of.
@katreacts6843
@katreacts6843 2 года назад
I've mostly done comedy so far because this channel is so new, it's only about a year old :) Going forward I will be reacting to emotional films, dramatic films, maybe superhero movies, who knows :) I have thrown in occasional dramas and horror films (which is hard for me because I hate horror films).
@itt23r
@itt23r 2 года назад
@@katreacts6843 I fully understand you aversion to horror movies, I am kind of that way myself. I'm not a big fan of superhero movies either. It is rether your reactions to powerful movies that interest me most, the ones that elicit strong emotion like say "Field of Dreams", "The Sixth Sense" and "Fried Green Tomatoes" which you have already reviewed. And in that category here are two great and often overlooked movies from each decade (starting in the 1950s) that average out at around medium on the emotion evoking scale I would recommend to help you ease into it (if that is what you want). I think you would enjoy all of these. And I think a lot of people would enjoy enjoy seeing them reacted to. For the '50s" "The African Queen" and "Harvey". For the '60s: "The Miracle Worker" and "The Music Man" For the '70s: "Catch-22" and "Slaughterhouse-Five". For the '80s: "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Dances With Wolves". For the '90s: "As Good as it Gets" and "Scent of a Woman". For the '00s: "A Beautiful Mind" and "Cinderella Man". and for the more recent movies: "Jo Jo Rabbit" and "Promising Young Woman".

There’s no way people can give an Orca everything they need. They are such social animals and they need their family. They need their specific pod. They have dialects just as complex as humans. You can’t take an orca and put it with just any other orcas. That’s the equivalent of putting a human in a country with a completely different language and culture. I’m not entirely against some modern zoos and aquariums but there are some animals you just can’t properly provide for. An orca is one. There is just no way.
