So what if a space marine inherits a knight cause if the knight's owner were to be part of a space chapter. Your gonna make friends( at the very least well respect ) cause I can say as a volunteer firefighter it's almost impossible to not have a level of respect to the individuals who puts their lives at risk WITH you. If by some instances you come to instead hate them, it more likely then not that the person in question did something that wasn t against you or the department your with. Instead at what given time it happen they did something that they thought what was best at that time but didn't workout well. And hindsight is just that hindsight. It's easier to criticized a man after he's been in the theater then it is being the man IN the theater. But the point am making is what if a space marine had an affect on the knight and vice versa and grown to have deep respect for each other and when the space marine was injured badly. The knight give his war machine for his friend's well being and able to continue fighting because it was the honorable thing to do, because it was earned by deeds and valor. So in spirit of friendship or well respect from warrior to another he gives knight as a gesture of acknowledgement
I’d love to see that Templar Knight as an animation! Just a giant metal behemoth following around a tiny squad of Astartes like it’s a lost puppy, and then centuries later, a Techpriest comes over for a standard resupply and goes “Where did you get that?!?” “It just followed us home one day, so we decided to keep it.”
In my head cannon I like to think that one knight who followed the Templar was allowed to sleep on the sofa because he was not going to do much to bother the Templar and as time progress he has family and started his own house in the Templar cruiser with its own knight order
@@tylerghersinich576’s as much a really inbred micro city as it is a Titian at this point, it had a set up in for a prolonged siege when it headed out complete with stuff to grow algae and grind up corpse starch. Or It’s like a dreadnought but with a humie instead of a marine inside it that probably look like that woman’s mother in the wheel chair from the SpongeBob chocolate episode if you cracked it open. Complete with really old servitors. Or Like he said it’s closer to a deamon engine of the emperor with a guy screaming for “no pity! no remorse! no fear!” Like the guy who was also in the chocolate bar episode that chased SpongeBob. Either way it’s a giant puppy for the Templars and they must have a pet name for it by now and it probably has favorite marines/squads and the thought of some heretics celebrating taking down that marine/squad finally to then have a very angry shadow loom over them is funny to me.
Could just be that its a perpetual who was living as a member of a Knighthouse, took a knock on the head in the final days of the Seige of Terra and as a result thinks the giants in Power Armour are his buddies from the Knights Templar back during the 12th Century Crusades and has been reliving the glory days in a 10,000 post concussion stupor, given its Black Templars they probably haven't even noticed when in his more confused moments when he describes the rush of oncoming Orks as 'Heathen Saracens' or rambling on about 'curved swords' I mean it wouldn't be the weirdest thing to happen in 40k
The Black Templar Knight could be someone with a super high psychic potential, and even though his body is dead, his soul bonded to the Knight, so kinda like a Demon Engine yeah. I dunno how these things work but: Mortal from the 31st millenium too angry to die, haunts a battle walker to continue slaying the enemies of the Imperium sounds so metal.
prefer the idea that he he just chooses one of the aspirants that washes out/cant complete the transformation, but still shows too much potential to just be a chapter menial/serf.
I do recall one particularly badass Freeblade who woke up from linking with his machine for the first time to see his house under attack by Chaos. After being the only survivor of this attack, he joined the Dark Angels on a quest to find the bastards who destroyed his family and make them pay a thousand times over. A quest that ended with him slaying a Bloodthirster in single combat.
Really enjoyed that game. You could make your Knight so powerful that it would almost break canon, mowing through Lords of Skulls and Gorkanauts like they were Chaos Cultists squaring up against an Astartes.
You can see how much love arch has for Warhammer lore. He is still making good content when people like me looked at a box of Khorramshahr berserkers for £40 and said yeah , il play SPQR , Bolt action and kings of war for the same price as a 500 points army 🧐
@Bunny Cop SPQR is table top Roman legions fighting. Pretty interesting game. Not my cup of tea, prefer Bolt Action. I'd also say Konflict '47 but I could not get into it when I saw fucking werewolves and shit running around. Was hoping for more diesel punk WWII and not sci-fi BS. That's just me. The tanks looks awesome though.
@@imadequate3376 ahh, I see. And I'd say werewolves are fantasy/horror, not Sci fi unless we're getting into some real Pulp nonsense :) Thanks, sounds like my kind of nonsensical fun.
My headcanon: the freeblade knights that appear to go millennia between refits are explainable by the fact that their particular knightly tradition is to be the galaxy's best E4 Mafia - and given that they share a universe with the Bloody Magpies, that's a challenge that takes true dedication to master.
"I know a guy." - Freeblader explaining to the local Guard Commander how he secured equipment for a full refit, ammunition, and a trip to the regimental dentist.
The idea that freeblades act like cats, where they show up one day and suddenly you have a pet! They stay for as long as they like until one day they just leave and then the process repeats. Also the image of a space marine asking the a tech priest of some rank if he can keep the knight he found on the battlefield and it just “followed him home”
With the knight with the black templars I think it would make sense if each pilot picks the next from among the chapter surfs as the machine itself over the time has started to consider itself as part of the chapter after a while, so what ever the original reason it started hanging around with them it now sees himself a part of them so the machine spirit now would not accept a new pilot that is not in some way connected to the black templars
In my head-canon, the real long-term Knight Errant types took with them a ship full of his personal household and forge equipment to create replacement parts. Nothing that can create a new Knight core, but can replace the other parts, as long as they're well provisioned. Now, for a Knight, I know "household" refers to favored servants and support staff, but I'm specifically including his family, for production of heirs.
Abominal Intelligence? Daemon Engine? May I suggest a third option? Warhammer Inquisitor: Martyr has a Machine Spirit that has been bonded with a human mind. I imagine that it's possible that these knights have been bonded with their pilots for so long, that the pilot has become one with the machine.
Yeah they also had an "Alpha Level Blank" which was backwards because they don't know the Greek Alphabet. The most powerful blank would be OMEGA level the opposite end of Alpha, not all blanks are the exact opposite.
You gotta read the Assassinorum: Kingmaker book Arch. It's a great book about knights (and the assasins sent to kill one). Some great Knight lore in that one, about how the throne works and the ghosts in the machine.
I mentioned in the last video about a Freeblade in the lore that fell in battle against some unknown xenos defending some unknown world. But for generations afterward, his Knight, his tomb was used as a ceremonial place for offerings and gifts for the Pilot and by extension the God Emperor. Id love to see that in a short story or a comic. Also I've been chewing on the idea of Knights being attached as support to the reborn Ordo Sinister. Would love to see some Knights in their scheme and colors with the Roaring Lions head sigil.
The crotch banner actually makes sense : if you have a giant piece of lore detailing all your greatest achievements, you'd want to keep it at a height where the commoners can actually read it ! where else are you gonna put it ? the shoulder pads ? I'm sure titan pilots will absolutely care about YOUR deeds in battle !.. Or pilots will slow down so they can get a good reading...
Wooo!!! Freeblades are so cool!!! The lone warrior lost without a home, on a quest of their own, with no family at their back. No one at their backs, no one to help them, but not willing to back down. Death or glory, they will fight all the same. These guys are so freaking awesome and I love them!!
I’m not sure about The Lost Knight, though I do remember a audio drama where a Black Templar Dreadnought stated that even their Chapter Surfs are armed at all times in a scene that shows that they also have very high esprit de corps, suggesting that they see them more like Knight Templar sergeants than the slaves the Carcharodons and Mentors see them as, if that’s the case then even though the Knight’s pilot would be a noble and not a commoner or yeoman, he would still be a mortal, so therefore becoming a sergeant to a brotherhood of demigods would be seen as a honor, meaning that the Lost Knight might be piloted by a succession of Chapters Surfs Descended from the original Pilot. As for the Forgotten Knight, This one is clearly GW leaning a little too heavily into the fantasy side, He’s painted green and he’s Mysterious, he’s the Green Knight, it’s a Middle English Arthurian Poem I’ve read and enjoy, and one of the things that drew me towards Bretonnia before I realized that the End Times had destroyed the Old World, but to make a long story short He’s a Supernatural character, a mortal made an immortal magical construct but still a man and not a deamon prince. This means that he doesn’t need support, In the poem, Sir Gwain cuts the Knight’s head off and He just picks it up and tells him to remember the bargain of a blow for a blow and where to find him in a year and rides off, I think it stupid to make a giant robot version of that especially when Cipher is clearly a much better done version of the Green Knight in Warhammer 40,000 but hey GW reuses ideas all the time and is somewhat hit and miss when it comes to the results.
Most free blades: “I will avenge my fallen household and hunt their killers to the end of the galaxy!” Me, probably: “the king yelled at me😢 I’m gonna go make my own noble house!”
I wonder of the "long lived" knights were a "A Knight's Tale" situation where the original guy died and someone in his retinue secretly took over or maybe he had kids and they took over
In the duology "Imperial Knights" one of the characters became a Freeblade because all of his Household became Traitors, so he renounce the name of his family and become a freeblade, he departure on a quest to slay a traitor of his family with a small retinue of Sacristans in order to maintain his knight and a small staff of pages and manservants, he also commandeer a starship and a Regiment of Mercenary Guardsman. Freeblades are still Nobles with a lot of resources.
In the 7th edition codex, there was a freeblade whose house turned traitor, so he packed his shit and left, then he dipped his knight in lava to burn off his heraldry! I always liked his look of the heraldry, just barely noticeable under the heavily burned splotches
I remember the mobile game Freeblade had an interesting reason for going Freeblade, he was the only survivor as his entire house was destroyed. However I won't put too much credibility on the story for it had the Dark Angels share their "secret" with this outsider one that would NEVER be allowed to leave their Inner Circle.
I still have it installed. ... I forgot what he looked like. I just know the game put restrictions on what weapons I am allowed in a mission and am stuck on a mission using guns I am not good at...
I like the idea that a new knight needs to achieve a feat of glory to earn his family title. It would keep the family strong when you have to earn your place. I can see it already: You are nameless. You are honorless. You shall seek the imperium's enemies and slay them. Only then will you have a name. Only then will you have honor. Now go. And do now return until you have earned your name.
i imagine the templar knight is in a similar kind of situation as a space marine recruitment goes and is selected to continue manning the knight replacing the house the knight came from
Speaking of heraldry, an anegdote from student days comes to mind (we had a subject named as such), and our professor lectured us on what each color means(everything has a meaning here) using the flag of tito's yugoslavia as a funny example, quote: "brotherhood(blue) and unity(white) above all! Oh, and freedom(red) if there's any room for it".
Arch I love your lore videos to this day and watched EVERY video you ever made. HOWEVER this is the first time a video made me loose my food and drink as well as make my coworkers look at me like I'm crazy. The office was so quiet and then I got to the part where you said "Mechanicum got confused on how did you even get it" refering to the lost knight. Set aside that you video ON the Black Knights is by far my favorite and I have re-watched it like 10 times by now this was to good.
I immediately fell in love with Imperial Knights when I read about Freeblades and decided my Knight and two Armigers would be freeblades. [heraldry nerd alert] Even came up with properly blazoned arms for them.
Arch, here's a thought I had, while listening to you recount the tale of Vigilantus. What if the reason Gorehaunter continually appears on Dalanthe every 1,000 years is _BECAUSE_ Vigililantus is there waiting for Gorehaunter to show up? That sounds exactly like the sort of M. Night Shyamalan nonsense that GW would come up with.
Litelry a week before your first knight vid i was racking my brain digging up as much lore for them cause im starting a knight only war game lol. You are truly emporor sent.
Agreed, the services of a freeblade is as varied as the worlds inhabited in the imperium where things like revenge against a particular individual or group or even race could lead to some seeking retribution or payment in blood, whilst others seek their own adventures, seeing that their services might be far better used elsewhere or on different battlefields rather than sitting at home twiddling their thumbs, and given the pomp and power even a small knight like an arminger would be an asset Amy planetary leader or ruler might be willing to give considerable power and resources to especially if say, a knight arminger with two auto cannon stops off on some medieval backwater planet where the most they have are crossbows and sharp sticks, a person with a five meter tall mech with two auto cannons and a machine gun on top to boot would pose a significant boost to any ruler or lord when dealing with local enemies or external enemies, imagine lord of the rings but with the exception of a two story tall mech vs the orc army. And you get the idea, other reasons could be more nobler reasons such as say. A knight pilot was wounded in battle in which a Sargent or trooper rescued and save both him and his knight, in which as an act of his faith and local traditions means that that pilot owes the soldier who saved him a life debt In which they would abandon their family in pursuit of the individual or group until that debt is either fulfilled upon the death of the individual or group in which the pilot would more or less return home or may choose to carry on serving with their regiment. However the more common or more unfortunate reasons could simply be either exiled due to some shame or dishonor upon the family in which they might have shown disrespect and so seek atonement with a several year long crusade in order to return into the family and earn their forgiveness, such as joining their next guard regiment in which an overseer would oversee their progress and after say a hundred battles the individual may be allowed to return. And finally the destruction of their family or even world, be it chaos or just pure misfortunes or even xenos or at the very least civil war, in which a family might be completely destroyed apart from a few scant survivors in which they have no choice Into becoming freeblades😊
I am always wondering logistics for these free knights...how are they move planets? Repairs?...etc. The most possible (and convenient) connection would be rogue traders.
I have a 2000+ point Freeblade Lance called the "Ferrous Inquisition". They are a secretive branch of the Ordo Xenos similar to the Deathwatch. Consisting of Knights from many different houses, bonded together by their service and shared hatred of all things Xenos, they travel around on an Ordo Xenos affiliated Rogue Trader vessel. Deployed when an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor decides that a bunch of gigantic, stompy mobile artillery units are needed, they travel the Galaxy killing Xenos filth. This narratively makes sense for me. Considering the influence and access to resources that the Inquisition has, I can easily explain how they are repaired, maintained, funded, and reinforced.
I would say that the knights have a large retinue that travels with them. Artisans mechanics servants Squires training to be Knights themselves. He probably even has a doctor to care for his health and a family
I love the idea of each knight having a fan club that also functions as the knight's small private army. I can see them now, with posters of the name and heraldry of the knight, cheering and firing guns into the air, from the sidelines of a battlefield. Hahahaha. Ahhh I love that mental image so much, that I would allow this in the lore, just for the giggles. I didn't think I'd enjoy freeblade knights so much. They may be one of my favorite things in 40k now.
hmm, I can imagine that the old-as-dirt Knight with the black templars was probably put in a dreadnaught style sarcophagus after one battle or another. And before someone says those don't work for normal humans, you really think the Black Templars, buddy-buddy with the Inquisition as they are, wouldn't be able to scrounge one up from somewhere for their giant-robot-buddy in killing the enemies of the God-Emperor?
The black templar knight if you ask me the real pilot is long dead, and the black templars just use it as a bit of a dreadnaught, and when anyone asks why they have a knight, the black templars simply say it is still that freeblade from long ago.
My love for the WH40k universe started back in 2015 by downloading an iPad game "Freeblade". Since then a long time has passed, and Arch just gave me those goosebumps again.
Arch on the thing about the green knight and the maintenance problem im pretty shure the knights are supposed to be reflective of literal vintage tractors alot of farmers around the world today do actually have tractors that still function better then the modern planed to be obsolete ones that are literally decades older then their owners knight are just that scaled up to a space empire timescale and retrofitted for war the way you might expect from ww1 era vehicles I also believe the relative simplicity and ease of maintenance youd expect from such a vehicle is closer to a reasonable excuse for relatively backwards feudal world so manage the maintenance problem given how much of a problem it would be for an early small and isolated colony if DRM or something existed like in starsecter id would be like expecting Uganda to develope modern main battle tanks instead of shoddy modified Toyota trucks well those Toyota trucks with russian rocket pods and heavy machine guns from the Golden age of trucknolody would be way more useful then the regressed age of truckperium's model T with a lee Enfield bolted onto the side
"he's been alive for all this time, he's never been seriously wounded?" Doesn't bother the Chaos Space Marines. 10,000 years of constant war and they're still kicking about without significant replacements besides what Fabius Bile can scrape together.
Imagine being that demon, knowing every 100 years you're going to start a ruckus on an agri world and the second you step foot in the real world; you're going to get shot by some knight with a grudge :)
XD must be like preparing for a grudge match every century. He hypes himself up, sharpens his blades, plots and plans, memories the fighting style as much as possible, but doesn't know the pilot might be different and thus his plans go out the window
I love the old knight lore as a kid. Some of the old designs were derpy but had a bit more character than the modern ones. Great couple of knight lore vids though Arch.
I'm actually a huge fan of Freeblades who've attached themselves to Space Marine Chapters. The first I heard of this was The Three Witnesses, a Freeblade Knight Lance who've sworn oaths to the Dark Angels and operate with the 5th Company.
Knight with the black templars: Most likely his their ace in the hole, that get dropped in action only when needed and if damaged or lacking parts it sits stand by in the battle barge waiting for those parts being rather pissy about it i'm guessing. For the pilot, ether it has been taken over by its machine spirit, templars did little tech heresy and install essentially dreadnought life support into the damn thing entombing the pilot in, or when pilot gets old they train their successor from ship crew, while the machine spirit runs most if not all of the operations in the battlefield, poor sod being just along for the ride. Knight guarding the planetary governors corpse: Most likely he barters with some rogue traders for the parts and anything he needs. Since his so old there out to be pretty big secrets he knows that might been forgotten by imperium, lost mineral rich world perhaps or some archiotech rich planet etc that is great for rogue trader. For the pilot essentially same thing as previously. I would be the retarded kid that sees the massive killing machine and go hey i want to be pilot of one. Hundred years and original pilot might just go alright you are my successor lets train you.. Since knight probably has close ties to planets previous leaders, he might have also access to regenerative services as well from that age.
21:30 That's actually exactly how I picture it going down, and I see nothing wrong with it. LOL They got a pet knight, like a mascot. He's adorable, and they're gonna do everything in their power to take care of him, cuz he boosts morale with his little "Hey, look at me, I'm part of the club with the space marines!" sort of attitude.
My first thought with the 10,000 yr old knight was 'Dread Pirate Roberts'. But I don't know if the official lore specifically states that it's definitely the exact same dude, & not just the same armour.
I always assume the knights get support staff & transportation that is attached to the knight(mech) where the knight goes they go so if one of them decides to leave the staff goes with him and they just buy what they need along the way
The long lasting knights probably just had kids and had their kids carry on their duties. The mind of the machine spirit does a lot to help keep the mind set straight
For replacement parts, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that the Black Templars just used an IOU from a forge world that they saved to get a steady supply of new parts. Every hundred years a techpriest just shows up with a moving van full of knight bits and throws the templars the key and walks off with a nod.
I like to immagine that every freeblade knight has a small support crew that follows them around. So at least one sacristan that knows how ti fix the bloody thing and some guards that keep watch in the hangar bay at night, maybe a coupple servants, they are nobles after all. I also imagine (read: hope) that generally the mechanicus is happy to provide the spare parts while the units they attach themselves to fork over the ammo.
About the Lone Knight / Black Templar Pet I imagine that the first one just had a good night while liberating a world and 9 months after it, still not done with the fighting (orks or other persistent stuff) got handed his successor. Like a House of one Knight.
I could see a few tech Marines keeping up repairs for a single knight. But that still wouldn’t explain for the long life Span of the pilot, unless they turned it into a dreadnought.
Ah a Black Templar knight, probably the most violent of stories beginning with "It followed me home, can I keep it?" And how did the High Marshal take the news? "Does the Codex support this? No? Good, your´re in!"
Maybe the reason they hang the banners from the crotch of the machine is so that people can read them easier without needing a ladder and or getting their grubby hands all over the machine climbing it?
Maybe the logistical constraints of the freeblade knights could be partially mitigated by the potentiality of the logistical cults of the knights that are so obsessed with their maintence that they even follow them into battle. Maybe Freeblade knights pick up some of the members of these cults when they depart.
What would be interesting is a Freeblade knight who was given a warrant of trade and became a rouge trader. This rouge trader sets up a guild of sorts or Free Company that provides logistical services to Freeblades in exchange for their service.
The logistics is pretty easy to explain. They have retainers. The AdMechs taking care of it consider their duty to the machines, not the Humans using them. The knights have their own fortunes. When they need parts, they just ask a Forge World for supplies, which they provide because they wouldn't make a machine suffer for lack of parts. When a machine is fighting for thousands of years, there's a good chance that it became a generational thing.
I think the crotch banners of the knights, actually makes a lot of sense in terms of being at roughly ground level with any infantry formations or armoured companies fighting alongside them, although i'd suspect that it's very prone to smashing against rubble and armoured wrecks the knights treading over.
