I just wanted to say thanks for making all these in depth tutorials. Just like with Blender and Gimp, it's people like you who do this that allow a much wider range of people use these free alternatives. Without them, they'd just exist on the side and wouldn't be able to compete with the "standards".

*! Note !* If you're having problems with your boolean, go back to where he says "extrude" (c. 16:45). It is NOT the Extrude function (which is in the Part bench). It is the Pad function (from the Part Design bench). Why does this matter? Because Extrude makes its own objects (on the same level as bodies, but NOT bodies), and a boolean must be done between two bodies. Pad, on the other hand, makes sub-objects of a singular body. It took me a good hour and some close watching to figure that out. Despite that, I'm still in love with these videos. Awesome work, JE, thank you so much for making these!

Best FreeCAD teacher on YT ! Is there a reason to (seemingly) avoid Trim, Splines, Fillet, and Mirror in favour of Tangent Arcs and drawing 'both sides' even if symmetrical ? Boolean subtracting Bodies (not Loft to Edge) is a bit of a brain-twister to envision/learn, practise practise practice
@JokoEngineeringhelp
@JokoEngineeringhelp 3 года назад
Hi SoloSailor; There is nothing wrong with trimming or splines or anything of that nature. I draw both sides because mirroring doesn't fully constrain the sketch after the mirror so I like to capture my own 'design intent'.

You should maybe look into using the function assignment to produce sketches that are linked to each other. instead of assigning one length twice, you can assign it once and then assign the other length to the one you already have via the constraint name. So when you change the dimension, it will reflect in the other sketch as well. It is also useful when you don't have precise measurements in your technical drawing and don't want to do the math. you just add a reference constraint and use that as as a reference in your driving constraint in another sketch. When using the polyline tool you can press M a couple of times to automatically generate arcs that are tangent to the previous line. Personally I'd have made only the lower half of the side section, extruded and then mirrored the whole thing. This thing could be done in the part workbench also using that method a little more convenient. Also eww... who uses inches for technical drawings and sketches? That's disgusting.
@JokoEngineeringhelp
@JokoEngineeringhelp Год назад
I have content on functions but this video is meant for those of lesser experience and the function assignment would be out of scope for the intended audience. I also have content on the M key, but in videos like this hotkeys will be a lose no matter what. People tell me to use more hotkeys and other people say I don't do them enough. I try to make hotkeys as clear as possible but not overdo it. It's too bad in the latest FreeCAD they changed the hotkeys, the previous ones were one of the parts that set FreeCAD apart in my opinion.

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. I'm part way through, (about 16mins in) and with the 2nd sketch, while it is saying it's fully constrained, it is only partially highlighted in bright green. When moving to the 3D view I'm only seeing that part of the object, with the rest of it missing. Any thoughts? The first sketch is fully constrained and visible, and thus working fine.

hey man, another awesome video. 🙌 one thing. i'm going to assume your running some ubuntu flavored GNU+Linux, and that your little key caster / key display/monitor is an open source app that may take some settings. if that is the case could you set the timeout of the key display? ie. can you make the keys being pressed display a little longer. when you're in the sketcher workbench and you're mashing all the keyboard shortcuts they flash in your little monitor rather quick, i'd say probably 500ms or less than 1 sec which makes it difficult to know what it is your pressing while watching at normal speed. just a thought. like maybe a 2 second display if the little monitor key caster supports such feature.

@releasethekraken5299
@releasethekraken5299 3 года назад
While watching the video, I was thinking that it would be handy to have a mirror feature from start with the sketch, in this video, mirroring above the X axis in real time all operations done below the X axis. Maybe it's too complicated or confusing.
@VorpalGun
@VorpalGun 3 года назад
@@releasethekraken5299 I had a look at the python api, and that idea sounds difficult. However a smart mirror command that adds some equality constraints should be doable. It is non-trivial to add symmetry constraints, as it is very easy to overconstrain the sketch by mistake. And it is not clear which subset of symmetry constraints should be skipped, so it is a question of design intent at that point. I might take a crack at implementing a smart mirror as a macro at some point, if I get time. It will not be perfect, as that is not possible. But it should at least be able to do some of the work.

When thinking about sketching, truly there are many ways to do the same thing and nothing is right or wrong as much as some things are better or worse for design intent. Usually in a design process you'll go back and update parts of a sketch, so a good sketch usually accommodates updating changes with as little effort as possible with as few sketch elements as possible. That's usually what I have on my mind when I think of different ways of doing a sketch, and on video I'm thinking about a lot more than just the sketch so sometimes I miss things that could have been done bettter! Hope that helps

I am deaf, I am trying to learn with the captions what you are doing.. I see that you discuss things about doing it "proper", but you are moving the pointer and clicking stuff and not explaining what it is you are doing.. also it would help if you would be more concise with your pointer movement instead of swirling it around all over the place. If you click on something.. tell people what you are clicking on and why.. go step by step.. I will admit that I have already learned better with you than some of the others. But if you really want to be good.. attention to detail will get you there.. also.. your play list, there is no order to them.. it is too random.. if your list was from beginner, intermediate to advance, so that folks would progress in a proper fashion and order, will greatly make you a better teacher! Keep up the hard work, make them better.. I for one would be a fan.. thank you for trying to help those that don't know where to start.

Try books too.. I have hard time learning from videos... sitting with books.. alone really makes my brain work.

Ok, I know this is an old video, but I am not sure if I see a problem, or I am stupid. At 9:21, you put the dimension of 3 inches. but a little earlier in the video, you put the dimension of 1.25 inches so that the boolean would not cause problems. Shouldn't that mean that you should change the 3 inch dimension to 3.25 because you added the extra .25 inches to the 1 inch dimension? cool video tho.

There is something strange here. I followed your instructions and at the end of the first part (that is from the beginning to 4:0) I get an unconstrained sketch. This is because the large end can move around an axis centred at the centre point of the smaller circle. Further investigation reveals that at 2:19 you set a tangent for the two lines to the smaller circle and then you say "A for angle" followed by a several second silence. Mysteriously after that you have no constraints. I have no idea what A for angle followed by nothing does in Freecad but it seems to work for you. Did you edit the video there?

I don't recall making an edit there at all. You can download the part to check for differences as well

@@JokoEngineeringhelp Odd. There is quite a long silent pause just a you say "A for angle" but the video doesn't show you typing any value for the angle. Sadly I am using 0.19 and that seems to have a lot of bugs or perhaps I am just good at finding them. Anyway, shortly after I posted that Freecad refused to draw arcs anymore. In fact it also refused to draw lines, squares or circles although strangely it would draw hexagons. Actually it didn't refuse to draw arcs: It was more that it drew them all over the screen in random places and with random sizes flashing here and there when I moved the mouse. It also reported lots of errors which look very like coding errors. I can't remember the text exactly now but, it included "nan is not defined' which I suspect is "Not a Number" perhaps. I'm going to have a look an OpenSCAD as an alternative as I find FreeCAD difficult to use and buggy. Anyway, thanks for your reply and also for your videos. They are certainly better than many of the others.

@@colcol758 Consider an alternate install if you're running linux and solvespace is a fun parametric modeler too, early in development though and not as powerful as freecad yet.

@@JokoEngineeringhelp Thanks for that. Sadly I'm not running Linux. I would like to know what the shortcut key"A" does. You say "A" for angle but no dialog box appears in the video so how did you enter the angle? I wonder what angle the other people making comments saying how they got this working used. I just don't understand this. Anyway, I've given up on FreeCAD as it is too buggy and unintuitive for any real use. You can't design a complex part with a tool that can crash at any moment and corrupt your design so that you have to start again.

@@colcol758 Pressing the A key and then two lines sets a dimensional angle between the lines. It's too bad you're seeing bugs, a lot of people make complex things without any problems. Good luck
