Freediving in Silfra is a magical experience. You'll find yourself swimming between tectonic plates, floating in clear, filtered glacier water. Life underwater has always been special to me. Freediving in Silfra is like entering a different world. A world where all noise and stimulation of our busy world disappears. It’s the most peaceful place on earth.
The water in Silfra is freezing cold- between 2°C and 4°C, or 35°F and 39°F-year-round. While diving in the crack you get carried by a gentle current, and staring into the depths below was a mesmerizing experience.
The water that flows through Silfra fissure is melted glacial water from Iceland's second largest glacier Langjökull. The water travels through lava fields and is filtered through the rocks for 30-100 years before reaching the volcanic crack. Due to this the water is known as one of the clearest water in the world with a visibility of 100 meters. It feels more like floating rather than swimming, being underwater. While I’m under the surface it’s like I enter a form of meditation. I need to to overcome self-doubt and obstacles, master my own mind and relaxation.
The colours of the fissure are indescribable, where you'll see neon yellow algae and red and black lava rocks. This is where my mind calms down, I can hear my heartbeat slow down and gravity disappears.
Silfra is located in a national park called Þingvellir, only an hour drive from the capital Reykjavík.
The fissure is located between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, and is the only place in the world where you can snorkel between tectonic plates!
