Wouldn't it be interesting if we applied expression and thought to the needs of the punished in ways that could be beneficial as well as acceptable within the punishment. What if we gave them a choice to answer questions in a booklet designed to gain more understanding. Questions that are not incriminating, rather questions that provoke creative thought, and conscience . What if we gave them materials, through programs, that could essentially create a foundation of new thoughts. Some people are left in the dark until they see the light. This would be best if the only achievement within the program would be within themselves and leaving nothing to prove. Soft pens and papers of thought provoking positive or neutral materials given weekly to those in solitary confinement especially. These materials can come from the people who are qualified within mental health and wellness, even aspiring college grads who have this passion. Something to pull the individual from the prisons of the mind.. which is the side effect of the constitutional punishment although it is not the goal. This could be just for them, not needing review but have an option for correspondence through mail to the program it came from. This could provide practice within the natural relations of a community who cares for one another. True criminals often know nothing of that community. We need to do more for the right to express and think in a healthy manner for those who truly do not yet know how to do that and who are cut off from interaction. There needs to be an opportunity for growth in order for this system to be humane.
