As a middle class white girl, and a daughter of a police officer no less, I benefitted from Rage Against the Machine's music more than you might realize. It's not that I wanted to be ignorant to the suffering that minorities experienced - I definitely did not want to be ignorant - but I didn't really have a way of understanding what was going on at the time. My rather racist family certainly wasn't going to share that information so I turned to music; that's how I came to understand and tried to empathize with the suffering that was happening all around me.

The original concept for RATM was going to have Maynard James Keenan on vocals, but they decided to go a different direction and he formed Tool instead. But Maynard does do a guest vocal spot for them on Know Your Enemy.

Let me tell you a little something about RATM - they absolutely turned the entire rock/metal/music scene on its head. Metallica were the kings of music at the time. They were huge. Then a little band called Rage Against the Machine got put on a summer concert tour as the band to play before Metallica. I personally witnessed Rage fuck a crowd up so bad at Zephyr fest in New Orleans, LA 1994, that an estimated 30,000 people, out of approximately 200k in attendance, left without seeing a minute of Metallica's set. Metallica was without question the most gigantic, most popular rock band, and to have 30K people just leave, basically from exhaustion, and NOT see Metallica was big news. I remember radio DJ's talking about it for weeks after that show. My friends and I were some of those people that left after about 10 minutes into Metallica's set. We were cooked after what Rage had done. Just imagine 200K people bouncing in unison for 45 minutes in NOLA, in July. It is an experience I'll never forget and one that cemented my love for the band.

I’m so excited for you to get into Rage! They’re extremely anti-establishment and for the people. Some dummies are always in comment sections saying they “rage for the machine now” but it’s because those people never realized what the message was. Rage abhors the US two party political system, imperialism, and capitalism. Their message hasn’t changed in 30+ years. They actually got back together and toured for a bit last year, but Zack tore his Achilles and they had to cancel the rest of the tour. Still hoping they tour again before I die 🤞🏼

One year at a presidential convention, there were so many protesters that for the opposing convention they set up a fenced-in "protesting zone". I happened to be at that one. RATM showed up in the morning, assembled risers in the fenced-in protesting zone and played their protest. It was unreal. Many ppl got arrested that day and the news refused to cover it.

I use this song and RATM's "Testify" in my college course on literature and the Iraq War (my students listen to a variety of protest music). Even though this song is pre-9/11, this song is heavily influenced by the first Bush Administration and the Gulf War where the U.S. was dropping bombs on and making money off of Iraq through the late 1990s (even though most people think the Gulf War lasted from 1990-91, the U.S.'s military and political campaign in Iraq was far longer and then extended even longer with the 2003 Iraq War (Zack released a 2003 song called "March of Death" with DJ Shadow specifically protesting the impending U.S. invasion of Iraq).

This one is about the military industrial complex. “They rally round the family with a pocket full of shells” Speaking to the government’s proclivity to tout being all about protecting the family and family values, all the while waging war, producing weapons, and sending sons and daughters to war. Every single song is political, they’ve got mad knowledge to drop, BARZ!!!!!!

So excited to see more of your RATM songs/videos reactions. This is a band that came out just before my adolescence; but they use historical, political and social injustices to amp up future generations to become critical thinkers of a nation that loses its identity more and more ✊🏼
@theveteransergeant
@theveteransergeant Год назад
The song is about a lot of things, but primarily the military industrial complex. "That five sided fist-a-gon" is the Pentagon, which is why the next line is about military budgets spiraling up and up, "the rotten sore on the face of mother earth (the MIC) gets bigger" and money that could be spent on things for the people instead get stolen by the defense budget. "The triggers cold empty your purse." Then the next verse opens pretty succinctly. There's always more money for the defense budget, but not for things that help people. "Weapons not food not homes not shoes, not need just feed the war cannibal animal." Then it goes into how the system is set up to keep you from even recognizing you're being stolen from by underfunding schools, libraries, etc. "What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and movin, they don't gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em.

Bulls on Parade is all about the egregious military spending the US is known for. The "Bulls" being a reference to the bull market. Where all the money is traded legally and illegally. One of my favorite videos by RATM is Sleep Now in the Fire. Michael Moore even got involved in that one and the event that happens in the very end of that video, really did happen. I remember my dad chastising me for liking them when it made the national news.

I was lucky enough to see them in 93 or 94 and I had a blast !! I was still in highschool then and EVERYBODY in the crowd was so cool . If you stage dived or fell on the ground in the moshpit whoever was around would pull you up so you didnt get trampled . While quite the opposite for some other hardcore metal bands . If you were on the ground you better scramble to get your ass up or somebody with combat boots would jump and double footstomp you for fun lol !

Im a 90’s kid but I was raised by a lesbian mom & a blk trans step mom, so I was more woke then your average white kid, but that being said, the first time I heard the name Fred Hampton was in a rage song. I knew about the Zapatista’s but I didn’t know about ppl like Leonard Peltier. My access to knowledge was incomplete. Like you had to work to find info. Like especially for a poor kid like me whose family couldn’t afford slow ass dial up internet, you had to walk your a$$ to an independent book store. Or find the underground paper. I remember learning about the genocide perpetrated by Columbus bc we moved to downtown Baltimore and someone plastered these papers breaking down the history of Columbus all over fells point. But even when the internet got cheaper and popped off for most ppl, like you could learn facts, but you had to dig deep. The problem now is while you have access to so much real info, it’s sitting right next to crazy sht that sounds real to ppl who haven’t were never taught critical thinking. Like instead of learning the names of slav.e owning dead presidents & state capitals, maybe we should teach our kids how to think critically. Prob the biggest gift my mom gave me was how to parse info and not let cognitive biases cripple me.
