Larry maybe that’s how it ended but It seemed he had more to say on the topic of climate change but was tentative about speaking on it because his opinions go against the narrative. He was clearly saying that it’s not at all like what we’re being told and he is correct.

I've always liked rebels... Because these are the ones that tear up the old rule books and do their OWN thing! Einstein was another rebel... So was Feynman! And when I used to teach, I was always drawn to those students who had their own unique way of doing things. Squeaky clean and obedient students that simply followed the rules were... Nice... But were pretty forgettable by and large!

I talked with Mr. Dyson (now more than 25 years ago) when he was at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton). During our conversation, he asked me why I was pursuing my PhD (knowing that he didn't complete his under Hans Bethe at Cornell). I said, "Well, for me it's like a carrot before me and I want to bite it and then eat it." To which he replied, "Okay." Then we talked about other things. May he RIP.

I assume you need the PhD to get in the door so people would take you seriously. Dyson had produced seminal work with Hans Bethe and Feynman, so he was already well inside the door and very productive. At that point the diploma is not important. But he probably should have gotten it anyway just to placate his parents.

Freeman Dyson's view on climate is the one we should adopt, that is to be skeptic. That's the correct way of science. To push a conclusion to the public that's not solid or well understood enough is simply not a good idea.
@Philitron128
@Philitron128 6 месяцев назад
Unfortunately it is pretty well understood. By this I mean that we understand the impact that CO2 (and other greenhouse gases) have on the climate. They cause a warming effect. This exact effect was first predicted in the late 19th century, and it was confirmed in the 20th. Our predictions have been frighteningly accurate, if a bit conservative. The evidence is absolutely overwhelming at this point. We have already been very skeptical, and it turns out that the people saying that CO2 causes global warming which will change the climate were right.

This video keeps coming up again and again in my youtube recommendations for reasons I cannot fathom. Why on earth does anyone consider Dyson "legendary"? It's very difficult indeed to point to anything which Dyson got right, or anything he actually achieved, beyond taking notes for Feynman. I read his autobiography a few years ago, the only thing remarkable is Dyson's self-estimation. Most of his ideas were completely crackpot. See Hugo Barnacle's letter to the Guardian for some examples. There are some funny interviews on youtube with Murray Gell-Mann discussing Dyson, worth looking up. [Edited to correct the name "Hugo Barnacle"]
@benkasminbullock
@benkasminbullock 2 года назад
@@Brad-qw1te Even Dyson admits, on other videos you can find right on youtube, that his main contribution to QED was taking notes for Feynman, because Feynman was too lazy to write them down. You've also forgotten about the Dyson tree and the astrochicken to add to Dyson's grand list of achievements. But it speaks for itself that the best you can offer for Dyson's legacy are a few bits of mathematics and fantasies like the "Dyson Sphere" or Project Orion (which is the same thing as the Helios propulsion system).
@benkasminbullock
@benkasminbullock 2 года назад
@@Brad-qw1te Unfortunately he wasn't being humble. Dyson's autobiography which I mentioned above is the book "Disturbing the Universe". RU-vid doesn't allow links in comments so please search for them yourself. I agree with you that we should all try to educate ourselves better. Interesting story, it resonates because I'm interested in learning more science. Only that during the pandemic, I had already used physics as applied biotechnology to deal with the COVID. I haven't had any infections for over a decade and swear by it! With an understanding of the essential scientific method, I call my wildcard method that goes beyond the necessary through my own tacit experience that is thankfully relatively simple. So does that make me a rebel without an PHD too? Only that I am curious as I know we have what I call a the "green quantum fourth industrial revolution" which I have applied myself does the best of our western liberal "do-it-yourself"! Indeed, inner conviction that it is 50%+ complete strategy and tipping-point that is industrial and energy conscious that is certainly scientifically and economically literate, if you will!?
