Kate, this was an excellent instructional video. I made clothing years ago, but have been working on quilting for the last few years. My body memory ran high when watching you work with the pattern & when you were easing in the sleeves. And then binding a COAT! Watching this video was a funny kind of fun. This coat is now added to my list. Thanks so much.

I enjoyed your tutorial on a quilted coat. Years ago, I made a couple of quilted jackets for my mother. The quilted leftovers were used for some parts of teddy bears-on the front, it made the bear look like it was wearing a vest. The inside of the ears (part that faced foreword), bottom of the feet, and the top middle of the head also used the quilted parts. Soft corduroy or denim made up the rest of the bear. The bears made great gifts and making them brings back memories of my mom.

Kate, making something with clamshells has been on my to do list. Now a useful spring/fall jacket makes it so great. Your video explanations were superb, and I'm a retired teacher so that's high praise! BTW, I bought the regular Tamarack pattern, not knowing it was for a B cup. Any suggestions on how I can place a dart for this D cup gal? Thanks in advance!
@ConfidentStitch
@ConfidentStitch 2 года назад
The easiest solution is to just buy another pattern. You can also learn to do a full bust adjustment. I made a video of how to do it way back when my husband was filming me in my sewing room. The Palmer Pletsch Complete Guide to Fitting has all the details. ❤️❤️❤️
@maryannyedinak4974

Lovely coat! Great info. How did you determine how far in front and back you would make the yoke? Thanks.
@ConfidentStitch
@ConfidentStitch 2 года назад
Because I did a round back adjustment, I created two back pieces instead of one on the fold. The two pieces curved at the top, which would make pattern matching difficult, so I extended the yoke to where the pattern pieces straightened out. I wish I had also extended the yokes in front to below the darts!
@patriciaferrito9245
@patriciaferrito9245 2 года назад
I'd like to see how the clamshells go on the solid yoke. Are they fused and then stitched? I thought the top row had muslin behind it. I love the coat and the video is very helpful.
@ConfidentStitch
@ConfidentStitch 2 года назад
I just fused the top row to the yoke for the front and back pieces. No need for the muslin in that situation. 😀

I have been wanting to quilt a coat for a few years now but did not know how. You are a super tutor, thank you. I will give it a go. Could I please request if you would not mind showing how you quilted the coat. Did you use template to draw lines or free motion. Many thanks for your help.
@ConfidentStitch
@ConfidentStitch Год назад
I got 5 quilt sandwiches ready (for the fronts, back and sleeves), and sent them to a longarmer. Then I cut out the pattern pieces! 😂

When you serged your pieces to keep them tidy, did you remove the blade or did you let it cut the fabric?
@ConfidentStitch
@ConfidentStitch 9 месяцев назад
I let it cut a tiny bit of fabric, but removing the blade would work, too!

Thank you for this clear video. I'm an experienced quilter and sewer. Could you just clarify at what point would you make the welted pockets? Thank you
@ConfidentStitch
@ConfidentStitch 10 месяцев назад
I would make the welted pockets before I sew the shoulder seams. I made a video showing how to make them, even tho I was too lazy to add them to my coat!

Hi Kate. Loved your video. i have what is probably a stupid question....you sewed the clamshells onto the muslin....what happens to the muslin when the clamshells go onto the fabric....thanks....

You trim it away. It's hard to explain, but it'll make sense if you use the clamshell template. :)
